1. Mission Statement To be a leader in best practices for health, safety and environment; offering important
resources and fostering an attitude of awareness for health, safety and environment
throughout the entire BCIT community.
2. Vision Statement The Health and Safety group will create and implement a Health and Safety Management
System that not only complies with relevant legislation but reflects best practices. As a
resource to the BCIT community, the Health and Safety group will work with all
stakeholders to provide a safe, healthy, and rewarding environment for our students and
employees.

4. Services Health and Safety promotes and enhances the development and implementation of health
and safety programs at BCIT and is a reflection of BCIT's existing health and safety
policy to provide a healthy and safe work environment for employees and students.
See appendix A for the BCIT Matrix of responsibility, appendix B for the BCIT Health
and Safety Policy, appendix C for the BCIT Smoking Locations Policy, appendix D for
the BCIT Radiation Safety Policy and appendix E for the BCIT Environmental Protection
Policy.
The BCIT Health and Safety Group is a resource for all members of the BCIT community
on matters concerning health and safety. The Health and Safety Group is the liaison
between BCIT supervisors and external agencies to provide current information required
to remain compliant with appropriate legislation.
4.1 Health and Safety Program BCIT is committed to conducting all activities in a manner that will ensure the health and
safety of all employees, students and visitors. Every person, visiting or working at BCIT,
is expected to maintain high standards of safety and follow all Health and Safety
regulations, BCIT policies and procedures, and legislative standards as they apply to the
Institute.
The BCIT Health and Safety group is responsible for the development and maintenance
of the BCIT Health and Safety Program in accordance with the British Columbia Workers
Compensation Act and associated regulations. The program is divided into seven parts
and consists of approximately 40 procedures, all of which are updated regularly and
available online at www.bcit.ca/safetyandsecurity/safety.
4.2 Training Training is an important element of any safety program.
The BCIT Health and Safety group are dedicated to providing and/or coordinating safety
training for BCIT employees. Some of the related training being offered by the BCIT
Health and Safety group include:

4.3 Special Events & Outreach The BCIT Health and Safety Group is always looking for ways to promote Health, Safety
and Environmental Protection.
By participating in special events and outreach programs, we strive to enhance the
learning and teaching experience of our students and employees by increasing awareness
around Health, Safety and Environmental Protection.
4.4 Health Promotion Whether it is through education, testing, the circulation of promotional materials, or
provision of services, BCIT is steadily working towards creating the healthiest possible
community. You will find that there are many avenues to take in order to ensure your
ongoing health and wellness. The BCIT Health and Safety group works with institute
stakeholders to provide education and services around health promotion to the BCIT
community.
4.5 Website The BCIT Safety and Security Department website is home to all of the BCIT Health and
Safety program information, and is a location where you will find the information on
upcoming courses and events related to Health and Safety at BCIT. The Website is
updated regularly and can be viewed at www.bcit.ca/safetyandsecurity/safety.
5. Roles and Responsibilities of Key Personnel
5.1 Director, Safety and Security The Director, Safety & Security is responsible for all the overall operations, planning,
direction and administration of the Institute's Security, Occupational Health and Safety,
Radiation, Emergency Planning, Business Continuity, Security Alarm and Key Systems,
BCIT ID Card Access and Traffic/Parking Management Programs.
5.2 Manager, Health and Safety The Manager, Occupational Health and Safety is responsible for managing the overall
planning and administration of the BCIT Health and Safety Program, provision of first
aid services at each campus, development and administration of the Health and Safety
Training program, and participation in special events and outreach.
5.3 Hygiene Coordinator The Occupational Hygiene Coordinator is responsible for occupational health programs
including investigation of indoor air quality concerns, hearing conservation, ergonomics
(work station assessments), respiratory protection, chemical safety, environmental waste
management and special interest safety committees.

5.4 Safety Coordinator The Occupational Health & Safety Coordinator is responsible for occupational safety
programs, including lockout, fall protection, fire safety, contractor safety, departmental
safety committees, prevention of violence in the workplace, emergency procedures, and
coordination of accident investigations.
5.5 Audiometric Technician The Industrial Audiometric Technician is responsible for audiometric testing of
employees and students at BCIT and provides educational sessions relating to hearing
protection to employee groups and students.
5.6 Radiation Safety Officer The Radiation Safety Officer is responsible for all aspects of radiation safety (ionizing)
including training, licensing, monitoring and radiation safety committees.
5.7 WHMIS Coordinator The WHMIS Coordinator is responsible for WHMIS compliance.
5.8 First Aid Attendants First Aid Attendants are responsible for first aid services for staff, students and visitors.
