BBC Scotland unwraps its festive offering of comedy, music, drama and a bumper Hogmanay party

BBC Scotland is set to bring viewers the party spirit from across the country with a bumper show for the bells. Scotland’s Hogmanay Live will be presented live from Edinburgh’s Princes Street by Jackie Bird and the show will also bring the excitement from other big celebrations marking the year end. It’s part of a tasty mix of programming on BBC One Scotland New Year’s Eve that includes a two-part comedy panel show, inspired by the 60thanniversary of television in Scotland. Hosted by Fred MacAulay and featuring Ronni Ancona, Alex Norton, Sanjeev Kholi, Neil Oliver, Susan Calman and Mark Nelson, Scots on the Box takes a sideways look at some of the memorable moments and names from the goggle box over the last six decades. In Just Dandy Ford Kiernan celebrates the anarchic humour of the Scottish comic that has kept children of all ages entertained. As the classic publication reaches the end of its run, Ford meets the artists and writers as well as fans including comedian Frank Skinner. Also on Hogmanay, Jonathan Watson and the team take a satirical look at the national sport and beyond in Only An Excuse? at the end of an eventful twelve months on and off the football pitch. Scotland’s Hogmanay Live follows with Jackie Bird back on screen, making her return to the airwaves after recovering from illness. Jackie said: “It’ll be great to be out with the party-goers enjoying one of the biggest parties in the world. Not only that, but we’re hoping to get around Scotland bringing the spirit of the night into everyone’s living room.” From Edinburgh the show will also go live to Stirling Castle, where the Proclaimers will be in concert, to Inverness, for a Highland-style Hogmanay and to BBC Scotland’s studio in Glasgow with Frightened Rabbit, Rachel Sermanni, Phil Cunningham and Aly Bain. The programme will be at the heart of the ‘midnight moment’ which sees out the old year with a Lone Piper on the battlements of Edinburgh Castle and brings in the New Year with the firing of the gun and the start of the spectacular fireworks display. Elsewhere on the festive television schedule, there are two episodes of a new series of Watching Ourselves which looks at the history of television in Scotland. The first revisits the heyday of the Scottish historical drama, awash with swordfights, skullduggery and dodgy wigs. Iain Glen, Brian Cox, Michael Gambon and Billy Connolly are among the contributors. The second programme looks at Christmas and Hogmanay highlights, from the BBC’s White Heather Club with Andy Stewart to the disco dancing specials of STV. In River City Molly (Una Maclean) gives Liz (Eileen McCallum) some Christmas spirit but for Christina (Caitlin Gillespie)the festivities are forgotten as she discovers the truth about her cyber bully. There’s also a two part Adventure Show special on The Scottish National Trail. The walk has been devised by Scotland’s best known walker, Cameron McNeish, and in two one hour programmes, he shares his passion and enthusiasm for what he describes as one of the great long distance walks of the world. On BBC Radio Scotland, there’s a wide range of content including inspiring music, revealing interviews and engaging documentaries to keep listeners tuned in during the festivities. There’s a Stark Talk Christmas Day special when Edi Stark interviews golden Olympian, Catherine Grainger. In the afternoon Christmas Classics brings an array of festive musical classics from the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and Jamie MacDougall on the stage of the Music Hall, Aberdeen.

On Hogmanay,Tutti Frutti 25 Years On looks back at the iconic television show with some of the leading figures, including John Byrne, Katy Murphy and Richard Wilson. And later, Bryan Burnett and Janice Forsyth are live from BBC Scotland’s studios in Glasgow with music to help the audience party into 2013 in style on the Hogmanay Show. Cèilidh Na Bliadhn’ Ùire 2012, BBC ALBA’s Hogmanay Ceilidh 2012, comes live from Achnagairn House, Kirkhill, by Beauly, with a whole host of great musicians including Mànran and Kathleen MacInnes. The programme also links up with the Red Hot Highland fling, Inverness city centre’s Hogmanay celebrations, for the midnight fireworks display. Presented by Kirsteen Macdonald and Derek Murray, the show will also be simulcast on BBC Radio nan Gàidheal. Donalda MacKinnon, Head of Programmes and Services, said: “There’s a great variety of programming to keep our viewers and listeners entertained throughout the holiday season. Audiences come to BBC Scotland in big numbers on Hogmanay and our line-up this year will provide plenty of laughs, nostalgia and uplifting music to provide extra fizz to the party atmosphere across the country.”

Christmas day has come and gone in Shieldinch but Christina’s cyber bully is relentless. Nicole is keen to offer her support and at the same time sticks the knife in about Alice’s lack of contact over the festive period. When Alice shows up, Christina is suspicious about her whereabouts and after sneaking a look at her phone, accuses Alice of having an affair and being the one behind the internet images. Alice is furious - but there is something she is hiding so Christina has reason to feel she is lying. Later that day Christina is approached by an older man who believes she has been messaging him – but she hasn’t. When he gets annoyed, Alice saves the day and the police are soon involved.

When the owners turn up, Robbie confesses to Will that it’s not really a dog he’s after, what he actually wants is a baby. Liz is doing her best to sign up the Shieldinch residents to a charity fun run – but it’s not going well. With an empty sheet, Liz starts to get nippy with Molly, so Molly retaliates by slipping some alcohol into her orange juice. Sure enough, Liz soon relaxes and is ready to take Molly’s top tips on how to get some people on board. Just Dandy NEW Monday 31 December – Hogmanay BBC One Scotland, 9.00 – 10.00pm

Ford Kiernan celebrates the anarchic humour of the Scottish comic that has kept children of all ages entertained in BBC Scotland’s Just Dandy. As the classic publication ceases publication, Ford meets artists and writers, past and present, and an entire gang of fans including comedian Frank Skinner, actors Brian Cox and Bill Paterson, veteran musicians Jimmie Macgregor and Tom Alexander, indie rocker Kyle Falconer from The View, and four-times Oscar winning animator Nick Park. The Dandy was launched in December 1937, and – priced at just two old pence, less than a modern penny – quickly became a hit with children in an era of recession and hardship. By 1950 The Dandy was selling two-million copies a week – even though it was competing with its stable mate, The Beano. With television and digital devices now dominating children’s leisure time, Ford looks at the plans for The Dandy to go digital – and, thanks to a Dandy artist, Ford becomes a cartoon character in an attempt to grab an exclusive interview with Desperate Dan himself. But the positive mood changes with the arrival of the Barry family – a hell-raising criminal clan lead by matriarch Carol Barry, lone parent to Waterloo Road’s newest pupils – bad boy Barry and daughters Dynasty and Kacey. Carol assures Michael her brood will behave but it’s not long before sparks fly when Barry goads fellow pupil Jack MacAlister into a fight. Tom intervenes and discovers the reason behind their hostility - Barry is sleeping with Jack’s mum, Olivia. When challenged, Barry promises Tom he’ll keep his relationship with Olivia discreet for Jack’s sake, but the troublemaker has no intention of honouring his word and sets about humiliating Jack in front of the school – screening a steamy video of him with Olivia.
