Parkside Victoria Resort & SpaParkside, which held its grand opening in June 2010, is quickly becoming known as Canada’s greenest resort for its push to become the country’s first resort-hotel to gain LEED® Platinum certification – the highest achievable.

The downtown Victoria resort, which offers fractional real estate ownership, had a remarkable first year of operation, accepting laurels from a number of environmental and development industry groups. Parkside was awarded 5 Green Keys from the Green Key Global Eco-Rating Program – again, the highest – in September. The award recognizes hotels that exemplify the highest standards of environmental and social responsibility throughout all areas of operations.

Just days prior, Parkside swept the Canadian Home Builders’ Association CARE Awards, receiving five awards including the top honour Development Project of the Year.Recognition has not been restricted to Canada. Earlier in the year, the American Resort Development Association awarded Parkside two golds at its annual gala in Las Vegas, Nevada. The competition was stiff in both categories, which included Disney Vacation Club, Inc., MSI Design/Walt Disney Imagineering, Hilton and Marriott.

Parkside is also becoming a popular venue for festivals, art shows, weddings and community events. The Victoria Film Festival chose Parkside to host its 2010 opening gala in January. And in March, the resort hosted its second art exhibition, Parkside Paints the Summer, featuring paintings by local artists. Parkside plans to start hosting art shows regularly.

Pacific Shores Resort & SpaAviawest’s founding resort near Parksville continues to be a favourite destination for seaside getaways. A limited number of suites still remain in the newest 200-block of guest suites, finished in 2007.

Scams and frauds take many forms and shapes, but all fraudulent activities have the same purpose – to take

advantage of the victim. While many frauds and scams use creative and innovative strategies and approaches to rip people off , most of them fundamentally use the same tactics.

In most of the cases of fraud and scams that are reported to the Better Business Bureau one or many of the following fi ve red fl ags could have been an indicator to the victim that they were about to be ripped off .

1 - Limited OpportunityMany frauds are designed to get you to feel like you are getting a great deal or are part of an exclusive “club.” By playing up the “one time only” or “limited time only” opportunity, scammers hope to force you into quickly making a decision to take advantage of the great deal without having time to do your research or think about the legitimacy of the

opportunity.

Protect Yourself - Don’t let the “limited time” opportunity ever be your reason for spending money. Always take the time to comparison shop and do your research on the opportunity and

person pitching it, before spending your money.

2 - Unsolicited ContactIn most circumstances the con artist will come to you fi rst with the intent of pitching some type of opportunity or coaxing you into divulging personal or fi nancial information. Unsolicited contact may come in the form of a mailed letter, a fax, a phone call or voice message, an email, a link on a website or via an online social networking site.

Protect Yourself - Always be wary of situations in which someone is off ering you an opportunity that you did not personally seek out yourself, whether by mail, fax, phone, email,

or via online social networking.

3 - Personal Information RequiredThere are very few situations in which personal information such as your name, address, birthday, Social Insurance Number (SIN), credit card numbers, banking information, Personal Identifi cation Numbers (PIN) or passwords are ever legitimately required by a business or organization.

Protect Yourself - Never give out any of your personal information (especially your SIN, PIN, account numbers and passwords) to anyone, unless you have a personal reason to initiate a conversation in which such information is required. Always pay attention to what information you are giving out, and ensure you are giving it to a trusted party with the appropriate security and protective measures in place to store it.

4 - Money Transfers RequiredA large majority of scams contain scenarios in which cheques will be written and money must be wired or transferred to another party. Lotto, prize winning and employment scams often require that the victim cash a cheque or transfer money under their name to the con artist.

Protect Yourself - Know that wire transfers are untraceable, so if the opportunity is a scam you will lose your money and it will not be found. Be wary of scenarios in which you are asked to cash a cheque and return a partial payment for any reason.

5 - Something Doesn’t Feel RightThis is probably the most important and most often overlooked red fl ag when it comes to frauds and scams. Almost everyone who becomes a victim at some point in the process of being scammed disregarded his or her gut feeling that something was off or wrong with the situation.

Protect Yourself - Use common sense and listen to your gut instinct – it is usually correct!
