On April 29th Terry Densmore and the Wasaga Beach Presbyterian church hosted the second annual lasagna cook-off. Gayle and I were invited to help with the judging, and as usual the entries were outstanding. Picking three winners was very difficult as each of the fifteen participants had really outdone themselves and all scored high marks for taste. In the end though there has to be a winner, or in this case THREE winners! Marilyn Schneider's Spinach Artichoke lasagna , Mike McLeod's Mexican lasagna and Lois Boyter's Chicken, Asparagus and Hollandaise. As an added bonus, Rick Davey and his Scout's and leaders from the church put on a clinic, cooking 2 dutch oven lasagna's and two loaves of corn bread outside on an open fire. I wanted to feature one of the top t h r e e lasagna's in this article that I thought was qu i t e tasty and a little unusual. Chicken Asparagus and Hollandaise LasagnaINGREDIENTS3cups fresh sliced mushrooms2 1⁄2cups chopped onions3cups prepared commercial hollandaise sauce ( like knorr) 8 -10 oven ready lasagna noodles3 lbs cooked chicken diced1teaspoon dried basil (or to taste)1teaspoon dried oregano (or to taste)3 -4cups shredded mozzarella cheese1 -1 1⁄4cup grated parmesan cheese 1lb fresh asparagus, cooked until just firm-tender

DIRECTIONSSet oven to 350 degrees.Grease a 13 x 9-inch baking dish.Sauté the mushrooms and onions in butter until the mushrooms release their moisture and the onions are soft (not brown).Spread a small amount of prepared Hollandaise sauce on the bottom of the baking dish.Place a layer of cooked lasagna noodles evenly over the sauce.Cover the noodles with the chicken or turkey.Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Then top with half of the mushroom/onion mixture. Then half of the remaining Hollandaise sauce.Sprinkle with half of the basil and oregano.Top the spices with half of the mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses. Then top the cheeses with all of the asparagus.Repeat the layers (omitting a layer of asparagus), ending with the cheeses.Bake uncovered for 35 minutes, or until bubbly.Let stand at least 10-15 minutes before slicing.

Canada's Rock'n Roll Legend, Bobby Curtola, the original teenage heartthrob and music trailblazer has passed away at home in Edmonton, Alberta on Saturday evening June 4, 2016.

A press release was issued Sunday announcing his death with a statement from his children:It is with heavy hearts that we confirm the passing of our father, Bobby Curtola. He was an amazing man who did so much for the people in this world, but even more as a father, uncle, godfather and Nono. His entire family requests privacy at this time while they grieve their loss. To his fans...he loved each and every one of you more than you will know, and never took for granted the life you gave him. He would want you to do something kind for one another today and each day. He would also want you to know he loves you, and that you have another angel watching over you - Chris and Michael Curtola.

Thanks to the Wasaga Beach Brewing Company for introducing Bobby to the film festival where he performed and presented an award at our 5th Annual WFF Red Carpet Gala Awards on April 30th. Bobby wowed the audience with “Fortune Teller” and “Three Rows Over and Two Seats Down”. He had an incredible energy and persona that resonated throughout the hall. Bobby charmed the ladies by taking for photo ops and signing autographs. At the film festival, I had the pleasure of speaking to Bobby on the red carpet where he expressed his enjoyment of being invited at the gala. “Thanks for the great visit! Love your Gala,” expressed Bobby Curtola. When I met Bobby at the RecPlex, I was busy rolling out the red carpet for our backdrop and Bobby was quick coming to my aid in setting up the red carpet in position. A moment I will cherish. Stay tuned for the WF5 Red Carpet Gala Awards on Rogers TV date to be confirmed.Bobby had such a great time in Wasaga Beach he participated in our “Back to the Beach” event on May 11th at Toronto's Hard Rock Café. He stood on a chair belting his tunes and continued despite running out of music. He began his musical career at the age of 16. Bobby started out pumping gas at his father's garage in Thunder Bay, Ontario and formed his first basement band “Bobby and the Bobcats”. After performing the Bob Hope Show in 1960 “Curtolamania” was born during that time he garnered 25 Canadian Gold singles and 12 Canadian Gold albums according to a biography on his website. Bobby proved it was possible to succeed in pop music and still live in Canada by breaking ground for later Canadian pop musicians. He was an innovator on a number of musical fronts. In 1998 in recognition of Curtola's long service the Canadian Music Industry and the Humanitarian Work Around the World, he was made a Member of the Order of Canada.Dianna Chycki is host of Beach Corner and Co-chair of the Wasaga Film Festival. “A Journey through

Alzheimer’s”

Over the past several months, the Town of Wasaga Beach has been working with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF), regarding the potential of the Town assuming management of portions of Beach Areas One and Two, within Wasaga Beach Provincial Park. The Town of Wasaga Beach is pleased to announce that an Agreement in Principle has been reached with the MNRF, pertaining to the Town of Wasaga Beach assuming management of the lands located between Spruce Street to 6 th Street of Beach Areas One and Two. This area of land is inclusive of the Town owned portion of Beach Area Two. Taking into consideration timing associated with the busy operating summer season for the Town of Wasaga Beach and the MNRF, management of Beach Areas One and Two will remain status quo for the summer of 2016, with the MNRF continuing to manage beach operations of the area. Additionally, operational details including potential financial and human resources implications to the Town of Wasaga Beach associated with assuming management of Beach Area One and Two need to be determined. Over the course of the summer months, Town staff will be working closely with MNRF staff to gain a clear understanding of the level of service that is currently provided by the MNRF pertaining to management of the Beach Areas. Town staff will also gain an understanding of authority associated with various Provincial Acts that are currently enforced by the MNRF. It is anticipated that Town staff will prepare a detailed report for Council's consideration in the fall of 2016, regarding implementation of the full agreement, pertaining to the Town of Wasaga Beach assuming management of Beach Areas One and Two from Spruce Street to 6th Street within Wasaga Beach Provincial Park in 2017. Mayor Brian Smith commented that “the Agreement in Principle that has been reached with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry represents a significant accomplishment. The Town's ability to have management control of the lands located from Spruce Street to 6 th Street within Beach Areas One and Two provides an opportunity for enhanced special events, the potential of reintroducing lifeguards in the area and enhanced business opportunities. Council will undertake a thorough review of all costs and potential staffing requirements required, with a goal of implementing Town management of the beach areas in 2017.” Source-Town of Wasaga Beach

Gordie Howe Dies at 88DETROIT - It is with great sadness that the Detroit Red Wings mourn the loss of one of hockey's all-time greats, Gordon (Gordie) Howe, who passed away today at the age of 88. The longest-tenured player in Red Wings' history, Howe's playing career spanned five decades and lasted 2,421 games until age 52, one of many factors that led to Gordie becoming known universally as "Mr. Hockey." Gordie is survived by his four children, Marty, Mark, Cathy and Murray, and nine grandchildren.

“Today is a sad day for the Detroit Red Wings and the entire hockey world as together we mourn the loss of one of the greatest hockey players of all-time," said Red Wings owner Mike Ilitch. "The Red

Wings organization and the National Hockey League would not be what they are today without Gordie Howe. There is no nickname more fitting for him than "Mr. Hockey." He embodied on and off the ice what it meant to be both a Red Wing and a Detroiter. He was tough, skilled, and consistently earned success at the highest level. His achievements are numerous and his accomplishments immeasurable. It is truly a blessing to have had him both in our organization and our city for so many years. He will be deeply missed."

A singer/songwriter from Sydenham, Ontario who just released his debut CD titled “For Us”. I met up with Alex Fisher at our “Back to the Beach” event at Toronto's Hard Rock Café where I got an opportunity to speak with him.At eight years-old he started playing guitar. “When I turned eight my parents said we had to play an instrument and commit for a year due to many people putting it off and then regretting it later. I chose the guitar,” said Alex Fisher. Alex got into song writing in the last couple of years. “The first album came out a little slowly at first followed by an onslaught of songs last August we put together the CD, went to the studio for the first time and one thing led to another and next thing you know I'm hanging out with you guys at Wasga Beach.” Alex acquired guitar lessons but prefers leaving his singing sessions for himself in the shower. “I never tried to be a singer necessarily never thought of it as a performance standpoint. My focus is on the song writing, the delivery of my songs and cover songs which I do like to play when I'm doing live shows,” expressed Alex. From 2007 to 2011, there was a brief hiatus at the time he was in high school and his emphasis was mainly on sports and parties until one night in the Caribbean he elected to play guitar and never looked back. “I let the guitar collect some dust and didn't really sing and play before that. A few years later at a friend's party in the Caribbean a guitar came out and I started playing again.”

Dreams do come true for Alex who reached out to open mics in the Kingston area and captured the attention of Sandy Graham, CEO at Entertainment Music Group, an established marketing, artist development company and international distribution through Believe Digital with offices in Toronto and Nashville, Tennessee, U.S.A. Their roster includes a group of seasoned professionals such as Andy Kim, Bobby Curtola, Alan Gerber, Keith Bradford to name a few. “I am really excited to be part of this team on this exciting journey.” Alex draws his song writing inspiration by Chris Stapleton who feels has influenced some of the modern country music on the radio. His debut CD “For Us” has just been released and plans are in the works for a tour. According to Alex a great songwriter is someone that can portray something you are feeling. “I think you have to do it in such a way that you write something that is relatable but you still get your point across and you are not too specific about it or anything specific to you.”Alex ultimate goal is to be a ghost writer having a few songs published by performing artists/bands. “As long as I'm having fun and writing songs that's where I want to be.” For more information visit: entertainmentmusicgroup.ca or his Facebook page.

We all know this. Life is short. We can do amazing things for this town and we need to start today! You. I mean You. If you want to make the rest of your life the BEST years of your life, you’ve come to the right place, Wasaga Beach. It’s home of the world’s longest fresh water beach, has a memory bank of multitude good times and special moments and has the potential to be great again. (Sorry Donald Trump). This town can be paradise if you believe it is paradise. Many of you have heard this quote before. “Whether you think you can, or you think you can't—you're right.” ― Henry FordSo lets collectively think we can. It’s time for some “Growth Mindset” in this town versus “Fixed Mindset. In the words of a kindergarten student; “If you don’t know how to do something, you can try it again and again and fix your mistakes, and if you don’t give up, you really showed growth mindset.” Not only a formula for growth mindset, add a propensity to stick to some long term goals that will serve the community and presto you have “grit”.Sound too Pollyanna for you. All this stuff is backed up with research from some of the leading minds in the world. So let’s seize the moment. We have a great summer ahead of us to build our town brand and hone our plans for the future. Let’s talk up a great future for this town with everyone we meet and every single day. It's not just about spreading the word. It's also about changing attitudes, changing the climate so that people feel more engaged to join in on building our future. For every event we hold, we learn to draw crowds with events that stake claims on a brighter future. We change attitudes by giving awards (lots of awards, not just one or two) for entrepreneurs and risk-takers, community service workers, Wasaga Beach employees of the month, retail service employees of the month, and we can create more categories as we build the excitement. You show how much you care about local business owners by breaking out the weed-whackers, window cleaner and little bit of paint. You support them by asking how they are doing. It all makes a difference. It builds the climate that welcomes action. It draws people that then draw more people. It brings in a lot of residents and more business people who are traditionally left out of strategic plans. You make yourself the focal point for the conversation you want to have about your town. Let’s share the vision, share our plans, find collective ways to work together and make it happen. Maybe it’s time to put our town vision on all billboards leading into town so everybody knows what we believe and value as a community. Let’s write the play book together and begin. It all stems from our collective belief that we can make this the best place in the world to live, work, play and learn.“Be the Beach”, send me your thoughts and comments at [email protected]. Your efforts count in making this community the preferred place in which to live, work, learn and play.Gary is president of Critel Professional Services, www.critel.ca, chairs the Wasaga Society for the Arts and the Wasaga Film Festival. Gary also lives, works, learns and plays in Wasaga Beach.

The Rotary Club of Wasaga Beach had another very successful year for their annual Corvette Lottery. On Monday October 5, 2015 twelve local charities were invited to a lunch meeting to accept the proceeds from the Corvette Lottery. President James Koehle declared “this year was particularly exciting as the lottery raised a record of $65 700 for 12 local charities.” The Corvette Lottery has raised over $500 000 over 16 years in existence. Proceeds from the Lottery has raised over $150 000 to RVH cancer centre and $91 500 to Collingwood General Marine Hospital. Lottery co-chairs Peter Wilson and Todd Young are looking forward to the 17th Annual Corvette Lottery next year.

WASAGA BEACH –Wasaga Film Festival Committee is delighted to announce that the Town Council declared the month of April 2016 as “Film Festival Month” in the Town of Wasaga Beach. The WFF will feature Public View & Votes throughout our community held at various local businesses that are members of the Wasaga Beach Chamber of Commerce.Deadline for submissions has ended on February 28th with the exception of the Youth Films category extended until March 31st at 11:00 p.m. This year we doubled the amount of films featured last season. For the 5th Annual Wasaga Film Festival competition, film awards will be based on a panel of judges appointed by the WFF Committee to judge each category of the films/videos along with Public View & Votes. The judging component will make up 65% of the score and the Public View and Vote component will make up 35% of the score. The winners will be announced at the Red Carpet Gala Awards on April 30th, 2016 at the Wasaga Beach RecPlex.“Red Carpet Gala Awards tickets” and “Friends of the Festival” tickets will be available to purchase at the Wasaga Beach Chamber of Commerce located at 550 River Road West in Wasaga Beach. The Red Carpet Gala Award tickets are $25 per person. The Friends of the Festival tickets at $50 each, a Friends of the Festival ticket is a pass allowing two people entry to every Public View & Vote scheduled during the month of April as well as an individual means to support the growth of the film festival. By being a Friends of the Festival you help the film festival by providing more entertainment and artists that can be enjoyed annually while attracting more visitors to our town and making our community more viable to engage in outside grants and funding. “As the Wasaga Film festival grows alongside sister festivals like the Georgian Triangle Music Festival, the Wasaga Beach Blues Festival, The Wasaga Beach Palaver International Literary Festival and others, we strengthen our community business case to build a Wasaga Beach Cultural Centre and re-invigorate the Wasaga Beach brand,” said Gary Cerantola, Chair of Wasaga Society for the Arts and Wasaga Film Festival. “We will continue to build recognition for Wasaga Beach as a place for exciting family and fun experiences known for good food, good getaways, reflection, good fun and great attractions while being recognized as a leading community in South Georgian Bay in which to live and work and play.”In addition to our WFF Public View & Vote, the Wasaga Film Festival will be participating at the 2nd Annual National Canadian Film Day on April 20th hosted by Waterside Retirement Lodge in Wasaga Beach. On that day the film festival will feature some of our film entries as well as showcase one of the projects from film maker and founder of Midland Film Club, Nate Lacroix. The WFF is a proud member of REEL Canada, a non-profit organization that celebrates Canada through film. The Red Carpet Gala Awards ceremonies will feature all of the category award winners and provide a celebration to remember with our special guest, Canada’s Greatest Rock ‘n Roll Legend, Bobby Curtola, presented by Wasaga Beach Brewing Company a partner of the film festival. Bobby will be performing and presenting an award amongst other artists. Enjoy an evening of hors d’oeuvres, cash bar and entertainment. Keep up the great work!

Question: When I do planks or push ups, my wrists begin to hurt and I have to take a break from these exercises. Is there anything I can do to help ease the pain? Answer: If you feel that you are performing these weight-bearing exercises correctly, and you have no previous injuries, the pain you are feeling in your wrists could be due to lack of mobility and stability in your wrists. Wrist circles are an easy, yet effective exercise drill you can do to help improve the suppleness of your wrists. Sit or stand in an upright position, with your upper arms close to the body. Bend your elbows until your forearms are parallel to the floor and hold your hands palms down with a loose fist. Circle your wrists clockwise five times, and then circle your wrists five times counterclockwise. Do this drill 2-3 times as a part of your warm up routine prior to beginning your weight-bearing exercises. Question: For health reasons, I need to eliminate all dairy food from my diet and I am concerned that I will not be able to consume the daily calcium requirements. Leafy greens are known to be a good source of calcium, but can you provide me with other foods that I might not know about that are dairy-free calcium rich? Answer: You can get all the calcium your body needs without having to consume dairy. The average American adult should consume approximately 1000 mg of calcium per day. Check out these surprisingly calcium rich foods to add to your weekly grocery list: Raw almonds pack quite a punch with 378 mg of calcium per cup. For a sweet treat, eat dried figs, which contain 274 mg of calcium per cup. If you like hummus, then try changing out chickpeas for white beans or black-eyed peas; bothlegumes pack approximately 170 mg of calcium per cup.
