As operating systems become more complex, it is increasingly difficult to control an RS-485 driverwith standard software and the RTS line. This is especially true in Windows and multi-taskingoperating systems. With B&B’s Automatic Send Data Control circuit, driver control is in the converterhardware, so you don’t have to work with software at all. The circuit monitors data flow and enablesthe driver during transmission and automatically disables it when no data is being sent. There is noneed to rework software or install new drivers. Fiber optic cable carries serial data reliably up to 4 kilometers(2.5 miles), much further than conventional copper lines. Fiberoptic data transmission uses light in glass fiber cable as acommunication medium. Current Loop to Serial RS-232/422/485 ConvertersHigher loop currents and voltages

Current loop devices use current on or current off to transmitbinary digits. B&B Electronics converters interface RS-232 andRS-422/485 systems to the most common current loop ports, 20mA ports with open circuit voltages up to 30 V. Many modelscan be modified for higher loop currents and voltages.

High speed optical isolators couple and isolate transmit andreceive data. All B&B Electronics current loop converters havea transmit (T+ and T-) and a receive (R+ and R-) loop. Eachloop may be operated as an active or passive loop. When theconverter needs to provide the loop current, a 12 VDC powersupply is required for the current loop side. Maximum baudrate recommended for current loop converters is 19.2 kbps.Models 232CL9R and 232CL4R are port powered RS-232 to

current loop converters. No external power required forpassive loop installations. A power supply is required togenerate an active loop.

Model 232PCLR is an RS-232 to current loop converter thatrequires a power supply for the RS-232 side of the converter.Model 485CL is a 2-channel RS-485 or RS-422 to current loopconverter with Automatic Send Data Control. It requires apower supply for the RS-485/422 side of the converter. (Powersupplies not included.)

Make easy connections between your TTL equipment and RS-232 ports. All models convert two channels in each directionfrom TTL to RS-232 or RS-422. Model 232OTTL offers 2000 Voptical isolation between the RS-232 and TTL sides and runs ata maximum baud rate of 38.4 kbps. The RS-232 side is portpowered. The TTL side requires +12 VDC at 100 mA isolated

from the RS-232 side. B&B Electronics also has several non-isolated TTL converters that can run at a maximum baud rateof 115.2 kbps: Model 232LPTTL is a port-powered version withDB9 connectors. The Model 232SPS2 converts data from a parallel port to aserial communication format, or from a serial port to a parallelcommunication format. Different data rates, formats and handshaking? No problem with this baud rate converter! Many older devices lack the option to reconfigure baud rate,data format and handshaking. Model 232BRC acts as atranslator between asynchronous devices, matching eachdevice’s needs while maintaining the highest possiblethroughput. Each side can be individually configured to suitthe device connected to it. The module supports any data rateup to 115.2 kbps and all standard data formats.

B&B Electronics’ smart switches can be used to connect one RS-232 port to four or more differentserial devices. These switches can be controlled in two different ways.The first way is “smart switch mode.” In this mode, the switch is controlled by sending a preamble(usually three characters) to the master port. As soon as the preamble code is received, the selectedslave port is connected to the master port.The second way the switch can be controlled is “port combiner mode.” In this mode, a slave portcan access the master port by asserting a handshake line. If none of the slave ports have theirhandshake line asserted, the switch can be controlled using the preamble codes. There is no delaythrough non-buffered switches. LEDs indicate which port is selected.

What are universal PCI cards?In the days of yore, the PCI bus used 5 V signaling on the PCIconnector. Some PCI buses, including many of today’s newestPC’s use 3.3 V signaling. A keyed notch in the card prevents itfrom being plugged into the wrong version of the bus. If youbuy a 5 V PCI card, it won’t fit into a 3.3 V bus, and a 3.3 VPCI card won’t fit into a 5 V bus. A situation fraught with peril

for the casual customer! Not to worry, all of the PCI cards inthe following pages follow the Universal PCI specification,officially termed PCI V2.3. As you might guess, Universal PCIis compatible with both 3.3 V and 5 V systems. To tell if yourcard is Universal PCI, look for two keyed notches in the busconnector, indicating that it will fit (and work!) in any PCIsystem.

Technician’s NotebookJanet: Isolation zones explained

Isolated serial card design requires attention to three things. Special optocouplers isolate theserial signals from the PCI bus. Unique isolated DC-to-DC power supplies provide power to

each of the ports and give us port-to-port isolation.Finally, the circuit board uses strict spacing rules –we call these isolation zones. Surges follow the pathof least resistance, and a tiny gap between traces isan easy path for surges to reach the delicatecomputer bus, bypassing expensive isolationcomponents entirely.

You’ll find wide isolation zones on B&B Electronics’isolated PCI cards. If you’re buying boards fromsomeone else, hold them up to the light and checkfor these isolation zones, you might not be gettingthe protection that you’re paying for.

ExpressCards are another great way to add serial and parallelports to notebooks and other portable devices. Traditionally thishas been done with a USB or PCMCIA interface. However,many portables no longer ship with a PCMCIA slot available.One advantage to using ExpressCard technology over USB is
