The podium bases will be 8-9 stories high, the six new towers will range from 27 to 43 stories in height. Both 1210 and 1220 Sheppard Ave. E. buildings will be renovated. Your Bayview Village Association (BVA) has received briefings on this proposed development from the City of Toronto’s planning department and from the developer. The developer will present their plan at the April 18 meeting. Your BVA believes this proposal is so seriously flawed, and excessively contravenes City development rules, that it is essential Village residents attend this meeting and articulate their concerns both at the meeting and in follow up letters to the planning department ([email protected]). Our major concerns about this project are: Density (4.1 FSI according to developer, but actually 5+ when correctly calculated). This is more than double the 2.5 FSI in the City of Toronto Sheppard Subway Corridor Plan for this site. Tower heights and density significantly exceeds anything comparable along north side of Sheppard Ave. E. The tower heights will significantly decrease amount of sunlight on some Village homes Vehicle congestion and pedestrian safety will be adversely affected. The East Don ravine will be threatened environmentally. The development is on the site of a former garbage dump and lumberyard. YOU CAN POSITIVELY INFLUENCE THE DECISION MAKING PROCESS. Amexon, the developer, proposes to demolish the building (1200 Sheppard Ave. E.) closest to Sheppard and replace it with a mixed-use development with 2,098 units in six additional residential buildings on three separate podium bases. The podium bases will be 8-9 stories high, the six new towers will range from 27 to 43 stories in height. Both 1210 and 1220 Sheppard Ave. E. buildings will be renovated. PERENNIAL SWAP: SATURDAY, MAY 12 10AM TO 12NOON Too many ferns in your garden? Is your Hosta in serious need of thinning?

Then come to our 4th annual Perennial Swap in the Bayview Middle School parking lot (thanks again to the school for their support).

What is a Perennial Swap?: It is for anyone interested in swapping their bright and beautiful perennials for another. It is a chance to divide a favourite plant that has grown too large – or hand-off one you have tired of and willing to share with others. Remember you can take home as many perennials as you bring. Or come to the Toonie Table where Perennials are just $2 each.

So bring your ‘old perennials’ or $2 and find something new. It is helpful to bring along a box to help carry home what you swap. If you

can label what you bring (or dig up) that would be wonderful and also please note whether it will grow in sun or shade or both.

For details contact Mary at 416-229-0094 email: [email protected]

FROM MARY’S GARDEN Busy time for your BVA Garden Committee. We have both the Perennial Swap coming up on May 12 and then the BVA Garden Tour. The Bayview Village planters are also on our agenda. If you would like to get involved or have your garden be on our tour please contact Mary at 416-229-0094 email: [email protected]

Mark your calendars: 4th Annual Perennial Swap Saturday, May 14 7th Annual BVA Garden Tour is Sunday, June 24.

GARDEN CLEANUP Just to remind you that Leaf and yard waste collection is picked up every other week, on garbage collection day, from mid-March into December.

Tree limbs, trunks and stumps This type of waste is not collected or accepted at City's Drop-off Depots if the diameter of the wood exceeds 7.5 cm (3 inches).

EARTH HOUR WALK SUCCESS We had a Great turnout for the 2nd Annual BVA Earth Hour Walk on March 31. Almost 70 people joined this year’s walk enjoying each other’s company, clear skies and hot chocolate. BVA’s own resident Astronomer-Educator Cathy McWatters kept our focus on the night sky during the walk and helped us find planets and stars. Gord McWatters brought along a very large telescope that was available both before and after the walk – Both of these keen observers worked hard to make our night under the stars very special. We are already thinking of another event on a warmer night in order to share our love of astronomy.

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH – BY RON CHOI Toronto Police have asked us to update you on the increase in the area in: Distraction Thefts. In one incident a victim was getting into her car after visiting a bank, when a man approached her and told she had dropped some cash. When the victim looked

down, she saw some American paper money blowing around her feet. She bent down to pick it up and the man left the scene. The victim got into her car to drive away, and discovered that her purse had been stolen. (taken while she picked up the American money) In this type of incident, there are usually 2 culprits, while one distracts the victim with a ploy as in this example, a second culprit steals a purse or wallet from the victim’s car. There are many variations on this scam, including letting air out of the tires on a victim’s car, and then distracting the victim while starting to help change the flat tire (while an accomplice steals a purse or wallet). These often happen after victims have come from the bank. Be alert – be on guard!

BAYVIEW VILLAGE 1961 MY HOW WE’VE GROWN! The pictures here are from Doug Webster. They show the building of Forest Grove church. Of particular interest in the first two pictures is the lack of trees

in– even the slope down to the ravine was bare –
