Principal’s Message– Review: Curriculum and Assessment

Dear Parents, Staff & Students,

@principalbsps

This week I would like to share some insight into what we as a staff saw to be the highlights of our

curriculum and assessment development over the past 4 years. The following is a snippet from the

Review self study document:

The pioneering spirit of our colleagues over 35 years ago has led us on a journey of quality language

teaching and learning at BSPS. In 2014 -15, the current plan began with a re- commitment of

introducing a 50-50 model and a desire to create a new history for the school.

It was decided in 2016 after a year of High Performance Culture professional development, maths

curriculum development, along with introducing a new inquiry model that the school should canvass

and seek opinions of introducing an internationally respected and renowned program the

International Baccalaureate (IB). The IB program embraced by the community was seen to provide an

excellent framework for future teaching and learning, curriculum development and assessment,

international mindedness and global citizenship. Importantly its acceptance would provide further

affirmation of the legacy and work completed at Bayswater South.

The step in becoming an IB PYP candidate school was seen as a highlight of the Review period of 2014-

2018. The recommitment and development of the CLIL 50 -50 BSPS Bilingual program was also

recognised as a highlight. These major pillars will continue to provide the foundation from which we

create a new history for the school while recognising and celebrating our past.

In other news, we have the go ahead for our oval, it is now completed. Of course we are very excited

and next week information will come out detailing how we are going to celebrate and open our new

oval. So stay tuned for that!!

Inside the Classroom— Mathematics in year 2

The topic in Mathematics has been ‘Location and transformation’. The students in Year 2 have been working on drawing and interpreting simple maps. They had fun creating their own treasure map on a grid and showing the position of their treasure by adding some glitter. Here are some examples for you to enjoy!

From Our PYP Coordinator— The Writing Process

Inarguably, writing is a process; we all do it in different ways, but we all follow an iterative process that gets us to the finish line.

Take email correspondence. We never write one for no rea-

son: there’s a purpose, an audience and a clear message or

idea we want to convey (maybe you’re composing a beautiful

email that communicates your ‘illness’ to your boss so you

can attend the cricket). We call this clarification process ‘pre-writing’.

And then you start ‘drafting’: jotting down your initial

attempt, deciding where each idea should go in the se-

quence, rethinking sequencing and choice of words as you

go.

What we DON’T do is a ‘1st draft’ and a ‘2nd draft’, we revise

on the go, experimenting with a range of possibilities and

deciding what works best (should I say ‘coughing a lot’ or

‘spluttering all over the place? Or neither… ). Many writing

process models separate drafting and revision into distinct

parts, but good writers will revise as they go, treating it as a natural part of their process.

‘Editing’ is distinct from revising; it’s not about becom-

ing more entertaining, persuasive or informative, in-

stead, it’s about ensuring that you are meeting the

conventions of the text type, and that everything is

spelled currently (Did I spell my bosses name right? Do

I sign off with ‘cheers’ or ‘regards’ or…? Does this comma change the meaning?) Editing is crucially important and can often be

the difference between someone reading our text, or reading somebody else’s text!

Finally, we publish! Does your email need a pink back-

ground? Maybe some BOLD test for emphasis? Probably

not, but it’s important for students to celebrate their effort

and get their work out into the wider world.

From Our Vice Captains There has been a lot happening, and a lot that will be happening in the next few weeks:

The new synthetic grass will be officially opened in the last week of Term 3. We will be having a Footy Day with a fundraiser for the Cancer Council and Lime disease with a special lunch that is yet to be revealed.

This Friday the year 2’s will have their sleepover, which has been a tradition for the past five years. The night is filled with fun party activities and an awesome movie on the side. Don’t forget the good ol’ Aussie snags.

Last Tuesday, the year fives were invited to attend a German Day at Heathmont Secondary College. They participated in a few activities such as watercolour painting art, soccer and eating traditional German foods.

Last week the year five and six students participated in summer sports, which was a great day for all. Congratulations to the cricket team who will be competing in division, but sadly the other teams will not be going to the next round.

Thank you everyone, we hope you enjoy your weekend.

Hello, my name is Bronwyn Upton and I am the Bayswater South Primary School Chaplain. I would like to outline for you the role a Chaplain plays within the school community. A Chaplain will-

Provide care and be a friend

Be a 'listening ear' for those who need someone to talk to

Provide pastoral care (encouragement and support)

Help a child sort through a problem or an issue

Run support groups (eg. Friendship programs)

Connect with parents as the need arises

Refer a child to other professionals

Support teachers in class, helping out as needed Matters of faith are only pursued when a person wishes to talk about them Life is not always easy. But knowing that someone is there for you to talk to, to listen, to encourage and to walk alongside you can be very comforting and can help you through difficult situations. My chaplaincy role is about offering care and support to the whole school community. It's about working with students, parents and teachers to assist in meeting the need s that arise in our daily lives. Children today have to deal with some very 'grown up' issues such as family break-up, grief and addictions. Or they may be struggling to make friends or to fit in with their peers. These can be very traumatic for children and could affect their ability to cope with the stresses of daily life. As such it may be beneficial for your child to have someone who they can talk to. This would occur on a purely voluntary basis. If you would prefer that this interaction not happen for your child/ren, please contact the school. Please feel free to call me regarding anything I can help you with. I am available on Mondays and Tuesdays at the school betw een 9am – 2.30pm. Or leave a message anytime and I will call you back. Regards Bronwyn Upton SCHOOL CHAPLAIN

From Our School Chaplain

Growing Your Children’s Self-Esteem Using Their Senses

It’s so important to encourage and compliment our children, and yet it’s not something we always readily do. We all appreciate being complimented, it puts a skip in our step and makes even a difficult day feel so much brighter. Giving a simple compliment isn’t difficult, but we often overlook the impact of what this can do to our children’s self-esteem, and so neglect to do it.

For example, it can be as basic as telling a child what a wonderful job they did helping their sibling with an activity, or how proud you are of them for their excellent behaviour when you went shopping, or what a great job they did packing up their toy’s when you asked them to. Simple, but it’s easy to miss an opportunity to compliment them. The more depth you give to the compliment, the better they will receive it.

Add even more depth to your verbal compliment and you will have an even greater impact on your child’s well-being. If you accompany your words with touch, a smile and eye contact, you will connect with them on a whole different level. It doesn’t take much to grow a child’s self-esteem and create good feelings at home. Compliments sincerely given have an enormous impact on those who receive them, and can satisfy the deep craving we all have to be loved and accepted.

We’re inclined to underestimate the impact a compliment can make and so tend not to give them out as readily as we could. But let me encourage you to give it a really good go, and just watch what regular compliments do to your children’s self-esteem and behaviour. It’s easy to habitually tell them off, but if you can outweigh the times you do so with more compliments, you will impact their self-esteem hugely and be rewarded with children more willing to please you with better behaviour.

There are two things that will enhance the impact of a compliment -

1. Smile and make eye contact as you give the compliment. 2. Give the compliment with a gentle touch to make it personal.

A smile and gentle touch tells a child so much more than words alone, as they add more value to the spoken word. These gestures allow you to use three of your senses making a greater impact on the receiver both visually, kinaesthetically (touch) and verbally. Then the person doesn’t just receive the message verbally, but via three modes; they see it, they feel it and they hear it. We often focus on the words and forget the all important visual and kinaesthetic aspects of a person.

Next time your child does something worthwhile, take the time to give a compliment also using these other modes of communication. Smile, make eye contact and add a gentle touch to really let them know how you feel. Watch your child’s reaction, you may be surprised at the response you get from them and the change in their general behaviour.

Hi Everyone in the Bayswater South Community,

In the past three months 18 students have been preparing for the Victorian State Schools Spectacular (VSSS). On Wednesdays, we come to the music room and practise all the songs and dance moves for the VSSS. Some of our favourite songs to dance and sing to are ‘Downtown’, Can’t Hold Us’, Wings’, and ‘I was Here”.

Every few weeks we have met up with the full team at VSSS and have learnt everything together. The next couple of times we get to do everything in costume. We cannot wait to see you at Hisense Arena on the 15th September. We are looking forward to singing and dancing soon.
