    Dear Edi tor Cind@eJ

I am wri, ting this letterconcerning the use of sodamachines in the school to beused by the students. First ofatl, the use of soda machinesduring sumner school, yearafter year, indicates that sucha machine does not interfere

:with school work. Neither doesi t create enough of a mess todiscontinue its ' use during thesumner. Secondly, the argumen tthat it would be bad for the

students is cOlTlphtly ruled outby the continuous sale of candyduring the school hours.Thirdly, a soda machine wouldbe an excellent way for studentcouncil to raise money. Thankyou for your consideration.

A woman's face sometimes can be a terr ible thing. There is

beau t y :in a woman's face; love can 1 i e in the deep v i bran t eyes j thefull re d mouth may hold tenderness and compass ion. But a woman's facewhich can be all things to all men can also be the face of evilincarnate. Satan can hide behind the fair-skinned facade of a waman'sbeauty. The story shall now begin, of a tale in which a woman who isthe loveliest woman that ever lived. I have created her in all thepossible ways. Her name is Astra Vale.

    Astra Vale was not always lovely. Indeed--in the 1 i t t l e villageof Jnnisfree, a green jewel set down in the b ~ e a t h t a k i n gh i l l s ofIreland, no child was born ugl ier. Her l i t t l e face was gnarled andcrooked, her l ips overly thick. She was not a pret ty baby at a l l .Her sainted mother crossed herself fearful ly and made pilgrimages tothe church beyond the hi l l and p ~ a y e dto God to set her child ar ight .For the f i r s t years of her l i f e , no one ever set eyes upon Astra Vale.Her widowed mother was too ashamed to show her ugly o f f s p ~ i n 9to herfriends.

One windy day, A s t ~ aVale, age eleven, s c ~ p e r e dinto the heatherin search of a lost bal l . There she met the s i len t man who le d he r toa dark cave and invoked tht p ~ e r sof darkness over her. The childwas awed and when the dark stranger disappeared and Astra returnedhome, her mother almost collapsed at 'the sight of her. For a glowsurrounded her chi ld . And the gnarled, twisted face was a thing ofthe of the past . Astra Vale ~ a s now serenely beautiful--great majestyg l ~ e d on the l i t t l e face. Mother Vale crossed herself--her prayershad been answered, or were they? And from that day ~ o r w a r d ,Astra

Vale's beauty became almost legendary in the town of Innisfree. Formiles around, she was the celebrated girl of that part of the country. The years flew by and the vibrant, lush magnificence of Astra

Vale's face k ~ p t pace with InnisfreeJs his tory. And one day, she waseighteen and at leas t fifteen men would have gladly ~ u mthe channeljust for a look from her. But nature took i t s normal course and AstraVale los t he r heart to Tom Reilly. The wedding day was a big one--aroaring, noiSY, happy occasion fo r everybody. And Tom Reilly andAstra Vale tripped happily to the l i t t l e cottage that Tom had bui l twith his own hands in the valley.

All l n n i s ~ r e ewaited fo r the fine l ine of offspring their unionwould bring for th . But his tory, fa ta l his tory, repeats i t s e l f . Onenight. almost a year l a te r, Astra bore Tom Reilly a son. Afrightening t e r r ib le , hideous son, and her anguished screams f i l l edthe cot tag. . And when Tom and th t midwife had quitted he r down andtaken the baby from the room, Astra fe l l into a troubled sleep. Butshe awoke soon to the sound of logs crack) ing on the fireplace--andthe dark stranger was standing in the center of the room. Astrarecognized him immediately from her childhood memories of the windyafternoon long ago. And when she asked the stranger what he wanted, his mocking a n ~ e rbrought forth her worst fears and suspicions
