The churches in the Belem area grew 17 per cent in 1984,

equalling the

v r g

growth of the previous

fiv

years. There are

over

7

members in 12 churches, with about 230 in the largest

one. The Baylesses continue to work directly in the church in a

housing area

of

80,000, and in leadership preparation in three

churches. The progress in leadership training has largely been

responsible for the good growth of the past ten years, during

which the churches have tripled their numbers.

Beverly has increased her work in teaching Bible school

teachers and in evangelism. She directed three girls from the U.S.

in successful VBS programs in 1985, leading to contacts for teach

ing parents

Preparation is goingwell for production of VBS and Sunday

school material in the print shop David manages. Financial back

ing for it is now the major problem. Avery expensive move of the

shop, due to highway construction, began the problem.

Joanne has been back from college most

of

the year. She

has been doing good work in VBS, Sunday school, and the

youth

group, as well as teaching Home Economics in the Amazon Valley

Academy.

John is a sophomore in A.V.A., and excells in all sports,

specially soccer.

A

tour

group of Christians from the U.S. visited Belem in

1985. Uiis was an encouragement to the missionaries and to the

Brazilians, as well as to the visitors. Everyone hopes there will be

more su ch

tours

Inflation continues to plague Brazil. The government is

combatting double-digit inflation;

that

is, it hopes to keep it

below 10 per cent per month. This does

not

affect the missiona

ries, but has lowered the buying power of the ordinary people to

the lowest level in forty years.

Seven churches have banded together in a constmction

fund, and have seen four church buildings erected in four years.

evangelism

this month. Methods were taught fo r group Bible

in homes, followed

by personal study with more interested people. Some
