Press Release

Total freight traffic increased by +5.1% to more than 8 million tons

bayernhafen Regensburg impresses with

continued success

Regensburg, 26th February 2014 – It pays off to operate actively in

the marketplace. bayernhafen Regensburg (Regensburg river port),

part of the bayernhafen group of companies, has developed

successfully in a wide range of markets: The freight traffic, per

environmentally friendly inland waterway vessel, grows despite

record floods and industrial actions on the locks by another 5.2%;

container handling grows by another 25% and more companies

establish themselves or expand. bayernhafen also consistently

invests into the future of the location. When tallying up all three

modes of transport: ship, train and truck - bayernhafen Regensburg

handles a total of 8.002 million tons of goods in 2013, up 5.1% in

comparison to 2012.

Ship freight traffic increases by 5.2%

By the end of April 2013, ship freight traffic increased by 46.8% due to

the mild winter when compared with the first 4 months of 2012. The June

floods stopped ship traffic on the Danube for almost two weeks and the

lock workers along the Main-Danube channel and Danube went on strike.

Despite all this, bayernhafen Regensburg was able to increase its ship

freight traffic again by 5.2 % to 1.645 million tons (previous year: 1.563

million tons) in comparison to previous year. A major contributor was the

group of goods of crude oil, mineral oil products and gases, increasing by

175% in comparison to 2012. The increased demand for slag sand for

the cement industry also had a positive effect - the stone and soil sector

therefore increased by 39%. There was a decrease in freight traffic of

about 16% for agricultural products, food and feed due to harvest failures

caused by the floods. Additionally, there was also a decrease of 8% in

steel freight traffic in 2013 in comparison to 2012.

bayernhafen Regensburg attracts heavy and bulky cargo

The heavy and bulky cargo sector is also very important for bayernhafen

Regensburg. A total of 8.610 tons were moved in 2013, especially

transformers, generators, engines and wind power plant components.

The port has cranes with a lifting capacity of 45 tons available; for twin-

handling up to 81 tons. Special truck-mounted cranes are used for loads

which go beyond that weight. "Companies who want to send or receive

heavy or bulky cargo via the Danube prefer bayernhafen Regensburg,"

explains Andreas Pippig, Branch Manager. "This clearly demonstrates

bayernhafen's importance as an international trade hub."

Container handling increases by 25%

The signs point to growth for container handling at bayernhafen

Regensburg: In 2013, the terminal operator CDN GmbH for the first time

handled more than 100,000 TEU (Twenty-Foot Equivalent Unit) - across

the two modes of transport ship and for rail it was exactly 104.293 TEU,

an increase of 25% in comparison to 2012. Andreas Pippig:

"bayernhafen Regensburg is linked with the German North Sea Ports

Hamburg and Bremerhaven via rail. Inland waterway vessels are used to

move empty container. bayernhafen Regensburg is of great importance

for the export-focused companies all over Eastern Bavaria. The

combined traffic scores points both from economical and ecological point

of view."

Rolling Road continues to cross the Alps

In 2012, a total of 21,587 trucks were transported in two train pairs daily

on the Rolling Road between bayernhafen Regensburg and the Northern

Italian town of Trento. At the end of 2012, the Rolling Road was

threatened with closure. It was only possible to save the Rolling Road

thanks to teamwork between bayernhafen, the terminal operator in

Trento, Interbrennero, Trenitalia, Trasposervizi and the private German

rail operator Lokomotion. This meant that a total of 12,553 trucks were

transported by rail in 2013. At the moment, a train pair runs from Sunday

to Friday, the limiting factor here is the availability of carriages. Rail traffic

also saw a slight decrease with regard to conventional goods, which

results in a decrease in rail traffic to 1.816 million tons in 2013, 8.2% less

than in 2012.

River cruises in Regensburg are still on the "upswing"

In 2013, a total of 788 river cruise ships docked in Regensburg - a further

increase to 770 river cruise ships in 2012, despite the floods in June and

the subsequent strike of the lock workers. bayernhafen operates the

landing stage for the river cruise liners in cooperation with the City of

Regensburg. There are already 800 registrations for river cruise ships for

2014.

Expansion and development - 2013 a strong year for bayernhafen Regensburg

BayWa Agrar commits to the forward-looking location bayernhafen

Regensburg and expands it's operation which has been established in

the port since the 1960s. In 2013, it opened the most efficient export hub

for Bavarian grain, with an investment of about 14 million euros. The

start-up company TraSt Logistics GmbH also commenced operation in

2013. The logistics company offers the handling and storage of bulk

materials such as grain, fertilizer and feed. New on board is also the

company group Max Bögl, with its headquarters in Neumarkt. Their raw

and construction material division set-up a concrete mixing plant in

Osthafen. Andreas Pippig: "The developments and expansions show that

bayernhafen is the right location for large companies as well as small and

medium sized companies." In 2013, Bremen-based Petrotank Neutrale

Tanklagergesellschaft mbH took over TanQuid GmbH's tank farm which

is located in the Ölhafen Regensburg (an area of the port where crude oil

and other mineral oils are handled). The site has a storage capacity of

approx. 80,000 m3. Petrotank, which supplies households with heating oil

and petrol stations with fuel, places an increased emphasis on rail and

inland waterway vessels.

Port and city development in harmony

The 2013 flood has shown how important flood protection measures are.

In the event of the statistical flood event "HQ100" ("century flood") lower

lying areas of the port's property in the Westhafen, but mainly large areas

of the bordering city areas in the eastern part of the Old Town would

have been affected. Therefore, bayernhafen Regensburg and the City of

Regensburg work closely with each other in order to coordinate port and

city development and to establish joint measures for flood protection.

bayernhafen contributes actively to flood protection

There are plans for: permanent structures for flood protection (in an area

which is mostly located on bayernhafen property), the relocation and

conversion of roads and tracks, landscaping of public areas with paths

and green areas and ecological compensation and accompanying

measures. Pre-planning was completed at the end of August 2013 and

the Water Management Office Regensburg has applied for planning

permission. bayernhafen has already carried out the first preparation

measures and cleared a plot on the banks of the Danube. Andreas

Pippig: "We get actively involved. The Water Management Office, the

City of Regensburg and us, we all follow a joint goal: efficient flood

protection and an urban development restructuring of the area whilst

safeguarding the continued existence and potential for development of

the port. The port development plan is continuously carried forward in

cooperation with the City of Regensburg. We coordinate very closely on

this topic. This creates sustainable solutions which take all interests into

account."

Plans to expand the container terminal

The close cooperation between bayernhafen and the City of Regensburg

also rings true for the plans to expand the container terminal: The plan is

to increase capacity by about 60% trimodal with direct water-side link of

the terminal area. The container terminal's connection to the road

network will also be improved for the necessary pre- and on-carriage by

truck. In future, truck traffic shall take place exclusively via the

connection to the eastern by-pass. The terminal expansion could be

completed in 2016.

Investment in bayernhafen Regensburg

An important project in 2014 will be the renovation and space

reorganisation of Westhafen-Südkai at bayernhafen Regensburg, also

with regarding the expansion of the container terminal.

Since December 2013, bayernhafen in cooperation with Karl Mossandl

GmbH & Co. is constructing a cement loading facility at Osthafen. The

plant is set to open in May 2014. Four steel silos are constructed, each

with a capacity of 1,300 m3, 34 m tall and with a diameter of 10 m. The

existing rail infrastructure is increased with an additional loading track.

The plant is operated by Cemex Deutschland AG. The cement arrives by

train and is then distributed in the region by truck. Handling is mostly

carried out in Osthafen due to the new cement loading facility, this leads

to a decrease in traffic in Westhafen.

"German car manufacturers need space for export"

In 2013, bayernhafen Regensburg met the increasing demand of car

manufactures and asphalted an area of about 40,000 m2 for new cars.

The new surface area is located in the Ölhafen and is ready for

automotive logistics, directly next to the roll-on/roll-ff ramp for ship

6

transport. This allows for efficient freight handling and safe parking for

cars. Furthermore, there are two half train length tracks with end loading

ramps for transport to and from the site using rail. "The export-focussed

German automotive sector will continue to require large spaces which

are well connected to all forms of freight traffic," says Andreas Pippig. "It

will be a task for the future to meet tomorrow's requirements when

developing the Äußere Wiener Straße. As location architect, we develop

the bayernhafen Regensburg continuously with our own funds and

therefore create the best possible general conditions for company's

already based at our site or those who want to establish a base in future.

We do this across all locations and companies. The companies based at

bayernhafen Regensburg benefit from this group association."

In 2013, bayernhafen invested again 300,000 euros in its own rail

infrastructure.

"Dialogue creates acceptance for port infrastructure"

In 2013, bayernhafen group supported the expansion of the "water and

navigation school" for children in year 3 and 4 of primary education. In

2013, this was supplemented by the Federal Water and Shipping

Administration WSD South with the topics on inland ports and logistics.

"The division of labour is the source of our wealth. Logistics is its

consequence," says Joachim Zimmermann, Managing Director of

bayernhafen group. He is also Member of the Executive Board for the

Bundesverband Öffentlicher Binnenhäfen e. V. (Federal Association of

Public River Ports) and believes that "goods transport has therefore a

central roll to play in a globalised world. Logistics is exciting and vital.

What logistics can do and what it contributes to the life of people, is

amongst the facts that children should already learn in primary

education."

The bayernhafen group operates six locations: Aschaffenburg, Bamberg, Nuremberg, Roth, Regensburg and Passau. The sites are centrally located on economic and geographic important nodes combined with an efficient mix of different modes of transport: Water, rail and road, make the locations stand out. In 2013, a total of 29.973 million tons of goods were handled (this includes 3.628 million tons by boat, 6.106 million tons by rail, 20.239 million tons by truck). The bayernhafen group is an active moderator for the development of logistics solutions and networks. They act as site architects who develop the common company and location strategies, invest in a highly flexible infrastructure and work in close co-operation with the resident companies to unlock added value potential. The aim is to further strengthen the position of the port as a logistics hub and platform for the worldwide exchange of goods. Strategic area management insures a mix of industries from transport, warehousing, logistics, services and production. 800 hectares (8 square kilometre) of total port area and around 500 resident companies with more than 12,000 employees make the bayernhafen group one of the most successful logistics networks in Europe and one of the most important motors of the Bavarian economy. The bayernhafen group itself employs more than 210 staff members. Bayernhafen GmbH & Co. KG is the operator for the locations in Aschaffenburg, Bamberg, Regensburg and Passau. Joachim Zimmermann is the Managing Director. The locations Nuremberg and Roth are operated by the Hafen Nürnberg-Roth GmbH, in which Bayernhafen GmbH & Co. KG holds a stake of 80%, the City of Nuremberg has a stake of 19% and the City of Roth has a stake of 1%.
