1 Bay Quilters Gazette President’s Message Issue 134– July 2015 Hello Ladies, This is my last report as President. I would like to thank my committee who I will personally thank at the AGM. There are others who have been a wonderful support and not in any particular order. Elaine Harrison, Barb Smith, Julie Thorburn, Carole Kirby, Val Jackson, Mim Blight and Les Heimann. They have always been available for support and guidance and for that I thank you one and all. At time of writing I am getting ready for the Claytons retreat. The Retreat you have when your not having one at the Peninsula Kingswood golf club. If last year was any indication it will be a bit quieter but a roaring success. This July meeting we will have our AGM as well as a shared lunch as individual tables. We will handover the last of the Secasa quilts for the financial year. In August after the hurly burly it will be a sit and sew and lots of chatter and catching up with friends. Don't forget our bus trip in September. This year no windy roads, a pleasant outing with fabric shops at the stops. What more could you ask? Les   concluded  by   commenting   that   people   have   to  bank   with   someone   –   why   not   bank   with   an  organisation   whose   profits   you   get   back   through  your  community.  The  more  customers  we  have   the  more  money  we  have  to  enrich  our  community.

Highett Community Bank® Branch, Bendigo Bank Some Interesting Information.  Bendigo  Bank  is  a  major  sponsor  of  Bay  Quilters.    At   our   June  meeting  Mr   Les  Heimann   told   us   a   little  about   the   Bank,   AND   presented   the   Guild   with   a  cheque   for   $2280.   This   money   will   be   used   to  purchase  batting  for  donation  quilts.    Mr   Heimann   (apart   from   being   Helen’s   husband)   is    Past   President  and  current   Secretary   of   the  Board  at  Highett.  He  presented  the  following  information  –      Bendigo   Bank   Is   a   public   company,   Highett  Community   Financial   Services   Limited,   that   has   200  local   people   as   shareholders  who   invested   $500.000  in   late   2000   so   as   to   enable   the   company   to   have   a  franchise   partnership   with   Bendigo   Bank.   Company  directors   are   all   volunteers.   Shareholders   have   one  vote  each,   regardless  of  how  many  shares   they  hold.  No  shareholder  or  his/her   family  can  own  more   than  10%  of  the  shares  in  the  company.    The  company  pays  all  expenses  (rent,  staff,  fit  out  and  all   operating   expenses)   and   Bendigo   Bank   provides  the  product,  and  the  profits  are  then  split  50/50.    The   company   MUST   distribute   ALL   its   profits   to   the  community  –  no  more  than  20%  as  dividends  and  the  remainder   by   way   of   grants,   donations   and  sponsorships.    Highett   Branch   opened   in  March   2001   and   as   at   30  June  2015  we   have   returned   over   $2,000,000   to   our  community.   As   well   we   have   “leveraged”   around  $3,000,000  of  community  assets  being  developed.    We   currently   have   approximately   4,000   customers  and  around  $150,000,000  in  banking  business.        Community   projects   the   Bank   has   contributed   to  include:
