Bridging /foundation programmeBridging or foundation programmes are specifically designed to prepare you for higher level, full-time programmes of study. They can help you gain the necessary academic skills and strategies to succeed in your tertiary studies.

CertificateCertificates are qualifications at Levels 1 to 4, with at least 40 credits. They can be between 12 weeks to a full-year in length and can pathway into diploma programmes. Most trades and service jobs require certificates at Levels 3 or 4.

CreditsCredits show the ‘value’ of a programme and denote the length of time required to successfully complete it. One credit is approximately ten hours of study. A one-year, full-time programme of study is made up of a minimum of 120 credits. All unit standard credits are recorded with NZQA and count towards a particular qualification.

Degree‘Bachelor’ degrees are qualifications at Level 7. They usually take three to four years full-time study to complete and can lead to further study at Masters or Doctorate levels.

DiplomaDiplomas are qualifications at Levels 5 and 6, requiring at least 120 credits. They are between one and two years in length and may pathway into degree programmes.

Entry requirementsEach programme has entry criteria you must meet. These may be academic requirements or work experience.

Students are more likely to succeed if they have life and/or work experience that is relevant to the programme and are able to demonstrate that they have the ability, interest and motivation, as well as the literacy and numeracy level to succeed in the programme.

Applicants with life skills and/or work experience who do not meet the stated entry requirements, but can demonstrate the equivalent ability and experience are encouraged to apply.

Graduate certificateGraduate certificates are qualifications at Level 7 open to students who already hold a recognised degree. They are usually 60 credits in length.

Graduate diplomaGraduate diplomas are qualifications at Level 7 open to students who already hold a recognised degree. They are usually one year long.

LevelEach programme is classified by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) at a Level from 1 to 10. The higher the Level, the more complex and demanding the programme will be.

MajorCertain diplomas or degrees allow you to select a major subject to study. For example, the Diploma in Tourism offers majors in international flight attending, travel management and event management. Since you’ll be studying this subject a while and changing majors is not easy, make sure to choose one you enjoy, are good at and possibly want to pursue for a career.

National Certificate in Educational Achievement (NCEA)NCEA is New Zealand’s main secondary school qualification. NCEA can be gained at Level 1 (usually in Year 11), Level 2 (usually Year 12) and Level 3 (usually Year 13). Different programmes at Bay of Plenty Polytechnic may require you to have a minimum number of NCEA credits at specified levels to be able to enter.

New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA)The New Zealand Qualifications Authority assures the quality of national qualifications in New Zealand.

PathwayAt Bay of Plenty Polytechnic you can enter a programme of study at a level that suits your previous work skills and life experience or qualifications. You may have the necessary

knowledge and skills to be able to enter directly into a programme, or you may need to start at a lower level with fewer entry requirements or complete a bridging programme. Many of

our programmes directly lead into, or pathway into, further study options either at Bay of Plenty Polytechnic or at other leading national or international tertiary education providers.

ProgrammesA programme is made up of courses, papers or units of study that lead to a qualification. Some programmes require successful completion of compulsory subjects while others offer elective subjects.

Once you’ve decided what you want to study, next comes the scary part – paying for it. This section gives you the lowdown on the numerous funding options available and our awesome Information Advisers are here to help. They can give you all the details you need as well as offering assistance with your application for a student loan or a scholarship.

You can find details on your course fees in the programme brochures - available from the Information Centre or online at www.boppoly.ac.nz/go/brochure.

Loans & AllowancesIf you’re enrolled in full-time study, then rest assured - all our full-time courses qualify for Student Loans and Student Allowances through StudyLink. Our advice is to apply early, even as soon as you think you might start studying, as there can be long delays.

IMPORTANT: Allowances and the living costs component of the Student Loan will only be paid from programme commencement or the date StudyLink receives your application, whichever is the later. Therefore, it’s important you apply as soon as you consider tertiary study.

Student Loans

Student Loans are available to help you meet costs while you’re studying. Your loan can cover:

– Fees (these are paid directly to the tertiary institute), – Course-related costs (up to $1,000 per year) and – Living expenses of up to approximately $163 per week, less any Student

Allowance you are entitled to.

Be aware that you will need to repay it once you finish study.

You can apply online at www.studylink.govt.nz or call StudyLink on freephone 0800 88 99 00.

Student Allowances

Student Allowances are also available to help eligible students with living expenses; this does not have to be repaid. Check out StudyLink’s website for their eligibility calculator to see if you qualify. How much you can get depends on your income, your parents’ income if you are under 24, whether you live with your parents, whether you have a partner and how much they earn, and whether you have children.

You can apply for your allowance online at www.studylink.govt.nz or call StudyLink on freephone 0800 88 99 00.

Training Incentive Allowance

If you’re a recipient of a long term benefit (for example, a widows, domestic purposes or invalids benefit) you may be eligible for a Training Incentive Allowance (TIA) through Work and Income New Zealand (WINZ). Your allowance may include course fees and materials, travel costs and childcare costs.

Each of our students has unique needs, wants and aspirations. Through our focus on creating partnerships and pathways with other tertiary institutions, as well as industry, we aim to ensure that all of our students can reach their potential whatever their needs and goals may be.

Our programme list is designed to help you succeed. You can enter a programme of study at a level that suits your previous qualifications or work skills and life experience. In some instances you may be able to enter directly into a programme, or you may need to apply a ‘staircase’ approach whereby you start at a lower level with fewer entry requirements or complete a bridging programme. Whether you’re a school leaver, or well on the way towards reaching your career goals, our partnerships and pathways will help you succeed in your chosen career.

Working together for your future…with the University of Waikato and Te Whare Wänanga o AwanuiärangiTo increase your tertiary education opportunities in the Bay of Plenty region, Bay of Plenty Polytechnic and the University of Waikato have joined forces and share facilities at Windermere Campus and Bongard Centre. In 2010 Te Whare Wänanga o Awanuiärangi joined the partnership. Through this partnership you can take advantage of bridging, certificate, diploma and degree programmes.

…with our other partnersTo assist your education pathway and give you greater opportunities, we’ve also developed strategic partnerships with other tertiary institutions. Our partners include Auckland University of Technology (AUT), Vancouver Island University (Canada), Otago Polytechnic, Te Whakatipuranga - Tauranga’s School for Young Parents, Unitec, VIA University College (Horsens, Denmark) and Waiariki Institute of Technology.
