The Modeler’s Bench – David Tanguay Alias Dr. Detroit

I started getting into the more serious side of modeling when I was going to school just outside Atlanta, GA in

Marietta in the late 1970’s. There were so many local clubs in the Atlanta area that you could attend a different meeting almost every night of the week. Each hobby store had their own clubs or groups. One of my favorite was at the Decatur Hobby House. This is where I learned a lot from some of the members that were winners in National competitions. Having been a history major in my early college years and having been involved in military collectables since my teens I became interested in WWII German aircraft. This is what I mainly model. About 10 to 12 years ago with my involvement with Sharkhunters and the Sub Committee I got into radio controlled and static submarine models. Currently, I am working on a model of a Type XXI in 1/48th scale. It measures out at 63” long with a beam of 5 ½” with gas ballast system, functional dive planes with automatic angle keeper, gas propelled torpedoes and electronic fail-safe. Mike Grant Decals – Finnish Air Force – Brewster Model 239 by Hal Marshman Sr. & Chris Libucha Some time ago, Mike Grant of Mike Grant Decals was good enough to send me some decals to use and try out. Among the assortment was his latest set for the Brewster 239 in Finnish Service. These decals looked absolutely gorgeous, but I was not up for a Brewster at this time. I looked around for a good builder who could do a good model, and use the decals to their best effect. Chris Lebucha, a fellow member of Bay Colony, was good enough to step up. What follows is Chris’ assessment. This was my first experience with decals from this manufacturer and my overall impression was positive. On the plus side this was an unusual subject of a very colorful scheme. These are among the thinnest decals I have ever worked with. Now one could assume that this would translate into delicate or flimsy as well, but this was not the case. With the ordinary amount of proper care they were easy to move into position and even after being on the model for a minute or so were still repositionable. Even the fact that you had to cut out each decal individually was not a hindrance once I realized not to cut too close. The carrier film absolutely vanished once the finishing process was complete. I made the mistake of cutting one roundel too closely and it chipped a little on the edge. I was afraid that the carrier film would be too prominent if not trimmed very closely but this turned out to be an unwarranted fear. Being as thin as they were they also settled down into grooves and panel lines very well. I did not use any solvents to get them to conform and they look about as close to paint as you can expect decals to look. They also require very little time in water to release from the backing; I would say that a dip of 20 seconds or so was plenty.

On the negative side the most noticeable flaw was that the white used in the national insignia was not opaque. This was most obvious on the underside of the wings where the insignia straddled the yellow wing tips and the gray overall wing color. On the topside the camouflage of olive green and black blended better, and the white does a better job of blocking the underlying colors. If these were used on a single color scheme they would actually have the desirable effect of replicating faded paint by allowing some of the underlying color to show through. The green used in the numbers on the side of the fuselage did show up quite well against the black. My other color observation was that the blue of the national insignia appears much darker than the few photos of these planes that I have seen. The only other caution involves the numbering of the decals on the sheet. The same number is used for both right and left side decals, but in a couple of instances the actual decals were handed and so the possibility of putting the wrong decal on a given side does exist if you're not very careful. In closing, the best question to ask about a product is: Would I use it again? Definitely. I was pleased with the ease of application and with the final look except for the opacity of the white. Knowing this problem exists I would simply use either paint or white decal to bolster the color of the white in the future. The way that the carrier film disappears after a flat coat really makes the decals an attractive addition to the model. Thanks, Chris I might add that Mike Grant includes markings for a Finnish Ju-88A on the sheet, as well as markings for an overall silver B-239. The attached pics are of Chris’ build, taken by Bob Magina. The model still needs a prop and other bits, but the finish and decal work are complete. Note the close up of the tail. The orange 4 and the vic marks are both surrounded with clear carrier, but notice no silvering, or defineable edges. Have fun, Hal

IPMS/USA Update for April (or Early May!)

Hi Everyone: Way less than 100 days to the Nationals in Atlanta – starting to get excited. I delayed the e-mail update a few weeks so that I could bring you a couple pieces of news. First, in the next Journal will be a ballot for a change in the constitutional amendment. This one recommends a change to the CBL to change the chapter chartering fee to allow it to be raised by the E-Board. This fee has not changed since the early 1980’s so this would go a long way towards having the chapters help pay the insurance costs for the meetings and contests.

Second update deals with the E-board. This is an election year and the following people are running for office and since there is no one running against anyone, this will be the board that takes place office in February 2006:

President- Jack Kennedy 1st VP- John Noack 2nd VP- Ron Bell DLC- Dick Montgomery HPD- Jim Woody Secretary- Jim Corley Non-elected positions that are remaining- Office Manager-MJ Kinney Treasurer- Ed Kinney DFL- Glen Broman IPMS General Counsel- Mark Gustavson Junior Coordinator- Steve Dottavio Internet Coordinator- Bob Hester Journal Editor- David Von Almen Also, Mike Bass from Stevens International (the

people who bring us the lovely Trumpeter kits) isworking against the licensing issues and needs modelers help to get our voices heard through the government. I have attached his letter below in John Noack’s section from the 1st VP.

I also have a MAP update. I know that we got a lukewarm reception to the last go around but we still want to offer it as an option for our members and a committee has been working on it and I have an update from Jerry David, it’s chairperson.

My only other subject is one that is near and dear to my heart. Currently (See MJ’s update later), our membership stands at 4400. That is the lowest total in over 15 years. We are on the eve of what is expected to be the largest Nationals ever, we have improved the web site, the Journal, beaten all others to reviews of the last two major releases and improved the functionality of IPMS and yet our membership numbers struggle. To say the least, the Board is very frustrated. We have drafted a letter explaining some of this and are open to ideas. IPMS isn’t going away but changes may be needed to keep our service level to the industry, it’s members and everyone who isn’t a member but enjoys all the work done by our members. On to the update which is pretty quiet this month…….

1st VP- John Noack

• Added several new sources of review products during this period.

• Starting new "super review" process that combines a new or recent kit release with updates and accessories. First one will be the Trumpeter USS Lexington incorporating several aftermarket upgrade and conversion kits. Stay tuned!

• Exclusive sneak preview of test shot build of Academy's new 1/32 F-16 is underway.

• Preparations underway for meetings with industry folks at Atlanta Nationals

• Dragon Models' Atlanta Convention has added a bunch of industry representatives and I will meet with them during both conventions.

• Reviewers' Corps going strong with over 55 members.

Letter from Mike Bass and Stevens International: Greetings, For the past year Stevens International has undertaken the issue of licensing and royalty-collecting by the defense contractors for the making of model kit and toy replicas of military planes, tanks and ships. The issue here is that these companies (for example, Boeing, Lockheed, Grumman, Sikorsky, etc) are demanding contracts and payments from the model manufacturers in the hobby industry for the

right to reproduce military replicas in miniature. The items in question were not only paid for by the USA taxpayer, but the designations they are registering may not even belong to them: these are designations which were chosen by the US Department of Defense (P-51, F-14, etc). In addition, IMMA's contention is that these vehicles would not even have been made had it not been for the US Government and the US taxpayer: you and I among them. How, then, is it proper to claim these as their own and to have the gall to charge our industry makers for the right to manufacture miniature replicas? This not only adds cost to the products (royalty percentages, bookkeeping, etc), but the ethics of this is certainly questionable. For the past 6 months, Congressman Robert Andrews (D-NJ) has been diligently working with us to enact legislation to prohibit these actions by the defense contractors. He is a very dedicated business-minded man who tries to right any wrong affecting small businesses, particularly those in his district. Next month, he will present this as an amendment to the Defense Authorization Bill and it will be brought to a vote. The amendment basically states "The Secretary of Defense is to prohibit those entering into defense contracts with the US Government from requiring fees or licenses from toy and hobby manufacturers, distributors or merchants for the use of military likenesses or designations". If passed this will open the door for the manufacturers to make kits as they wish, to release them quicker, and without the worry of "Big Brother" trying to regulate it. In order to get this passed, Andrews' office is asking anyone in the hobby industry(hobbyist or shopkeeper) who lives in or has a shop in the district of any of the members of the Armed Services Committee to call that office to speak to either the legislator or an aide to offer support for this amendment (letters may not work, as by the time they are read it is likely the bill will have already been up for a vote). You may invoke the name of Congressman Andrews and advise that you know this amendment will be brought to the Committee when it meets in late May. You may even state the quoted text above. A link to the list of Armed Services Committee members is below: <http://armedservices.house.gov/about/members.html>

If you see any in your district, Republican or Democrat, click on their name and all the contact information will appear. Mr. Andrews is also seeking a Republican co-sponsor of this amendment in order to improve its chances of passage. This is a real one-time chance to make something big happen for the benefit of the hobby industry, and you can help us do it. The executive board of IMMA is deeply involved in this, and have already contacted their reps. I ask you to do the same. I ask only one favor: If contact is made with either your committee member or an aide, please advise me at once at email address [email protected] <mailto:[email protected]>. Andrews' office wishes to follow up with any congressional office where contact has been made in order to acquire additional support. Thanks, and with your help we can hopefully rid the hobby industry of this persistent nuisance. • National Table and 3 part new member/renewal forms have been ordered for the convention.

• Recent back issues of the journal are now being sent from this office as the orders are received.

• We need to remind our members to notify us of all address changes. It seems that we have had more of these lately than usual and each time the post office has to advise of an address change, it costs the society 70 cents, plus the cost of the journal and the initial postage to send it. (The journals are not returned.)

• New members names and addresses for the past several months were recently sent to the Regional Coordinators for them to contact the new member and welcome them to the society.

• See you in Atlanta - Mary Jane Guest Contributor- Jerry Davis, MAP Chairman Over the past several months, a group of IPMS/USA members from around the country volunteered to serve on a steering committee. Its mission was to refine the concept of a Modeler's Achievement Program (MAP) that would recognize individual modeler achievement while supporting the goals of IPMS/USA. This MAP steering committee worked long and hard in devising a program that supports the goals of IPMS/USA while recognizing individual modeler achievement through a national IPMS/USA recognition program. The MAP program allows a modeler to receive recognition at various skill levels without being involved in a contest. This provides an outlet for those who do not want to compete and will thus build toward the value of IPMS/USA. The Mission Statement of MAP is:

1. Promote the fun of the scale-modeling hobby.

2. Improve IPMS/USA membership and public perception by recognizing individual member participation in the scale-modeling hobby.

Participation in MAP is on an individual basis and is voluntary. MAP is designed to motivate the membership and new incoming members to IPMS/USA to build better models and participate in the society. The MAP is in effect, a guide to assist the membership in

Bay Colony Historical Modelers The President's Column FROM THE BRIDGE

We are now entering membership year, 2005 - 2006. It's June and that means it's renewal time. Dues will still be only $10 per year. If you would like to pay a couple years in advance that's ok. Mail your payments to me or see me at a meeting, checks to be made payable to Bay Colony Historic Modelers. We have a lot to cover this time! A small group of us made the trip out to Rochester for Noreastcon. I think I can say that we all had a good time. Bob Magina and Kevin Conlon were ecstatic! Bob did very well, both in the competition and with the vendors. (Aircraft kits were scarce. It was armor and cars and tons of small stuff for the armor, dioramas, and figure guys.) Kevin did almost as well with the vendors and scored big in the raffle. I got to pitch NoreastCon 2006, more on that later. Bob, Kevin and Ray Laskorski all took awards. Bob's small diorama called "Modelers Reference" with the old pickup took 1st in it's class and best diorama over all. The "Make and Take" we did for the Raynham Cub Scouts, May 18, at the First Congregational Church of Raynham, went well. Ray Rosario was the contact person for this project. We handed out about 20 models, wiping out our make and take stash. Ray gave a short talk about his models he had brought to display and answered questions from the scouts. The scouts then sat around a large table as Ray, John Gisetto and myself handed out the models. They went to work and we hovered around the table behind them, demonstrating how to use the sprue snips to remove parts and how to follow the instructions, (a part of the equation a couple of them felt was unnecessary), and helping out when needed. Many of the parents stepped in to help out because the three of us were in over our heads with such a large crowd. The response to this event was very positive. A number of parents thanked us and indicated that they had enjoyed working on the project with their son. The Scout Master stated that he rarely sees such interaction between the parents and scouts. Overall a very positive experience. The snap-tite kits were perfect for this level. Based on the list I saw on the IPMS web

site I don't know if there are any snap kits available for the future. More on this later. Be sure to speak to me if you know of a group that could benefit from a make and take. One item discussed at the IPMS Region 1 business meeting out at Noreastcon was the IPMS MAP program. Map is Modeler Achievement Program. (We discussed this at one of the meetings and decided that as a club we didn't want to get on board with the program as originally presented.) I didn't get the whole story or all the facts, but evidently Nick Phillipone, from IPMS/ Northeast New York, wrote a letter to IPMS about the proposed program. So IPMS/USA said thanks for volunteering to help set up the program. So there are some revisions to the program coming down the pike. I will update you when we know more. Meanwhile, I asked John Gisetto to review the program to see if there was part of the program we could use in-house for our Jr., Novice, and Intermediate modelers that wish to improve their skills. Speaking of Novice and Intermediate, we have a Novice category at Baycon to help modelers get their feet wet competing. I have wanted to expand on this area for a couple years, to see if it would generate more interest. One hurdle I have yet to cross is what to call it. I'd prefer not to use Novice or Intermediate but I haven't been able to come up with anything better. Any suggestions? Back to the Business Meeting. Doug Hamilton made it official by announcing that we are co-host, along with Granite State, Patriot, and Wings and Wheels, for NoreastCon 2006! So save the dates of May 19 and 20, 2006. It will be held at the Radisson in Marlboro, MA, at the intersection of Rts. 495 and 20. We have some posts to fill. I was hoping that someone from our club would like to volunteer to fill the position of Vendor Coordinator or Jr. Event Coordinator. Currently, John Gisetto is Secretary, Bob Magina is Web Master and Registrar. I get to be Convention Chairman. Some of the other filled positions are Contest Chairman, Devon Terpening; Chief Judge, Al LaFleche; and Treasurer, Don Johnson. There are a number of meetings to be planned and a lot of show planning left to do. You can speak to me if you think you would like to be part of the committee. We have a lot of good ideas but not necessarily the means to carry them off. Sometimes, another person can help solve the problems we have stumbled over.

Bay Colony Historical Modelers

I was surfing the IPMS web site, (www.ipmsusa.org), looking for specific information, when I stumbled across the Local Chapter page. There under Region 1, after IPMS/Bay Colony Historic Modelers was a statement, "Site inactivated 6/12/04, apparent dead link". I tried the link and it took me to our excellent web site. (www.ipmsbaycolony.com) I immediately e-mailed Bob Hester, the IPMS/USA webmaster and brought it to his attention. Well, Bob jumped right on it. Bob also commented on our "excellent" web site! Speaking of our web site, there is a lot of good info there. Make use of the forum section to keep up to date as to club happenings, to do some research, or help a member with his research project. I am always posting messages there. Currently, as an IPMS chapter it costs us $10 per year to maintain that status, along with a minimum of 5 current members. There is talk that the charter fee is going up. This fee hasn't changed since it's inception, (25 years?), and it no longer covers the cost of the insurance policy. That means that the general IPMS membership is covering the insurance costs of the chapters. It has been argued that chapter members that are not IPMS members are enjoying the benefit of the insurance but are not sharing in it's cost. The counter argument is that the IPMS members that belong to the local chapters help to pay that cost by their membership in the National. It's not my intent to expand on that argument, nor am I implying that anything in our makeup needs to change. But there is truth to the fact that if more club members belonged to IPMS it would help balance that cost. Another hotly discussed topic at the Business Meeting. I have IPMS membership applications if anyone needs one. You can also join on line. World Expo 2005 takes place in Boston July 1 thru 7. The exhibition is only on the weekend, July 1 thru 3 at the First Corps of Cadets "Castle". This is a do not miss opportunity. The best figure painters in the world will be displaying there. Del’s Corner! by Del Stator More Hints and Tips.... Stop into your local Home Depot or hardware store and go to the paint department where they keep the sandpaper. Look for a Norton 3X Contour sanding pad. I found one in 320 grit, Extra Fine. It's yellow foam pad, 4 «" x 5 «" by 3/16" thick and very flexible.

Ol' Paint and Me! by John Nickerson The way you may hear me talk with other members at meetings and the things I write about in the forum, might cause you to form an opinion that I am one of those guys that will tell you that you used the wrong shade of pink on your Panther A. Not so! Well, ok, maybe to some of the guys that should know better. It's just that to me, one of the joys of this hobby is researching paint. I love to do it, but my actual attitude to painting a model is much different. I think you just need to be close. It all started back when I used to use a brush, ( a cheap one at that), and a 10 cent bottle of Testors PLA Enamel. I started mixing colors. I found that some of them worked and some didn't. A couple times I ended up with a substance close to peanut butter in consistency that was real tough to spread with a No. 1 camel hair brush. Soon I discovered Floquil and what could be done with an airbrush. I still own that first Binks airbrush. That's when I really started mixing colors. I bought the Floquil color mixing charts from the HobbyTown store on Boyleston Street and was off to the races, mixing my own Black Green 70 and Dark Green 71 from Rail Road colors.

IPMS Update – Cont’d learning to construct better models incorporating skill sets from basic through mastery levels of modeling. IPMS/USA encourages participation in MAP which we feel will increase IPMS/USA membership and motivate current IPMS/USA members. It is a program that raises the awareness of the hobby by creating levels of achievement and sufficiently recognizes members that achieve higher levels of success of having fun in modeling. Ol' Paint and Me! – Cont’d It wasn't too long before hobby paint manufacturers started making historical colors. So why mix, I asked. I

had no way of knowing how close the Floquil formulas were to the actual colors and now I had a paint that claimed to be a match to Black Green 70, etc. So why not use them? So I did. The whole question comes down to how does it look when it's done? Is it a reasonable finish? Is it a reasonable scheme? Who cares if the RLM 02 is dead nuts on? Lets face it, unless you have access to the original subject and can hold your model up next to it, who's going to know what's correct? The Japanese started the war with few official colors and only required the colors be close. Each aircraft manufacturer produced their own interpretation of the color. The Germans were probably the most strict with color formulation. But the method of application will cause it to look different. A sprayed finish will vary due to the thinner used but how does applying it with a mop effect it? The US Government had some stringent color requirements and different manufactures to produce it. The Government was less concerned about the color match and durability then its reflectance or reaction under infrared photography. When the Military released a new painting spec. they also described how to mix the color until paint supplies could reach them at the forward bases. Such as the so called Neutral Gray; one part Black to one part white. Wait till you try Olive Drab! I research colors to try and find, as accurately as possible, what the correct intended color was. Then I try to find a source that matches straight from the bottle. Why mix if you don't have to. I just want it to be close. Then I try to apply some common sense. What method was the paint applied by and under what conditions. Now that said, I still mix paint. Mostly just adding black to make it darker or white to make it lighter. I use this method mostly on armor. I choose the base color. Normally I apply this at right angles to the hull and turret directly from the side. Then I lighten the color a little with white or possibly yellow and spray at right angles to the top surfaces. The eye can barely detect the color change but it makes the model more three dimensional. It's all just part of the fun as far as I'm concerned.
