The Minnesota Landscape Arboretum is offering a

refreshing tour to one of the most romantic and scenic

regions in Europe – the Bavarian Alps. From

Munich and the surrounding countryside into magical

Salzburg, you are going to be enchanted with the

beauty and the culture of this Alpine paradise.

Bavaria! Just one word conjures up a vision of all that

the region has to offer – dirndls, lederhosen,

mountains, castles and of course, bratwurst and beer!

We’re going enjoy all of this, and more on our eight

night tour, hosted by Peter Olin, director emeritus of

the Arboretum.

Our journey begins in the charming medieval walled

city of Rothenburg ob der Tauber. The best

preserved medieval town in Germany, Rothenburg fits

the word romantic perfectly. You’ll sense this as you

walk the wall that encircles Rothenburg to view

perspectives dating back to the Middle Ages. If you

climb the Rothenburg Town Hall Tower (circa 1250-

1400), you’ll get a great view of Rothenburg and the

surrounding, mostly pastoral countryside.

From there, we travel the Romantic Road, Germany’s

most famous and popular tourist route . It stretches

along the Tauber Valley towards the Austrian border,

where two of Germany’s most notable castles are

located – Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau,

both built by King Ludwig of Bavaria in the late 1800s.

Along the way we’ll stop to sample some of the

regional Franken wines and aperitifs after our lunch

enroute to Munich. With our hotel centrally located

near the main train station in Munich, it’s an easy walk

or tram ride to the pedestrian zone of Munich, where

you find cafes, beer halls, great restaurants and

wonderful shopping. You can view the Glockenspiel at

the top of the City Hall on the Marienplatz, where

figurines in the bell tower perform a dance every day,

depicting a dance from the 16

th

century.

We’ll enjoy touring Munich, with its English Garden,

Nymphenburg Castle and Garden, and the

Hofbrauhaus, along with Neuschwanstein, LInderhof

Castle and Oberammergau in the mountains outside

of Munich. And we’ll give you a free day in Munich to

enjoy the city and its delights on your own.

Salzburg – the city of Mozart -- is small, quaint and

charming. On our walking tour through Salzburg,

we’ll visit Mozart’s birth house and the beautiful

Mirabell Gardens, built in the late 1600s and

considered to be one of the most beautiful Baroque

gardens of Europe.

Salzburg evokes remembrances of the story of the

von Trapp family, brought to life in the musical and

film “The Sound of Music”, based on a true story and

set in Salzburg in the 1930s. We’ll take you to the

sites in the film that you are so familiar with, not only

in the city of Salzburg, but in the surrounding

countryside.

Neuschwanstein Castle

We’ll visit the mountain resort of Berchtesgaden,

infamous as the World War II hideaway of Adolf Hitler,

but today a picturesque town, tucked inside a corner

of Germany near the border, where year round

visitors enjoy the outdoors, hiking and cycling in the

summer, skiing and snowboarding in the winter. We’ll
