Insulating fl uids are a key component of much electrical
equipment. Highly refi ned mineral oils, silicone fl uids, vegetable
oil (natural esters) and synthetic esters guarantee the operation
of transformers, medical and safety or even radar technology
devices. Insulating materials lose their insulating and cooling
properties due to impurities and ageing. The consequences
include damage and failures of equipment and systems, even
catastrophic failures resulting in transformer fi res and the
consequent costs and environmental damage.
The testing of insulating fl uids is therefore legally stipulated and
regulated through national and international standards. Equally
important are the economic reasons for regular testing to
include extended lifetime of equipment and optimal use of
insulanting oils to achieve enormous potential savings.
A good investment to avoid high costs.Insulating fl uids testing with BAUR.
BAUR oil testers are characterised by quality recognised
worldwide. Quality in the defi nition of BAUR and its customers
are not empty words. It is determined by criteria which have a
direct or indirect impact:
• Precision, reliability and scope of measuring results
• Reduction of testing time and costs
• High degree of individualisation and user friendliness
• Long lifetime of instruments
With these principles, BAUR makes complex technologies and
complex standards easy, safe and profi table for the customer.

• The extremely effi cient laboratory instrument BAUR
DTA 100 C for continuous operation and the mobile tester
BAUR DPA 75 C are used for breakdown voltage tests and
subsequently to determine the degree of impurity due to
external particles and water.
• The unique laboratory device worldwide BAUR DTL C, is
used to determine the dissipation factor tan δ, the specifi c
resistance ρ and the relative permittivity εr. These parameters
indicate the refi ning quality and purity of oils as well as the
aging and the dielectric losses occurring during operation.
Insulating fl uids are sensitive.
Even smallest impurities, air
intake, gas formation and humi-
dity affect their properties.
It is important to minimise
faults and effect on the sample
during handling. This is the
only way to get defi ned and
reproducible measuring
results. The optimisation of
measuring and switch-off
technology therefore is another
unique and innovative benefi t
from BAUR.
• With the BAUR KFM 3000 tester, the water content in
insulating oils is determined according to the Karl-Fischer
method. It allows the exact determination of even the
smallest quantities of water.
• The oil testing software, ITS, optimises the mostly tedious
but necessary post-processing, documentation, archiving and
comparability of measuring results.

in the service to the customer and user. It is also the result of
intensive review of the requirements of the user, creating
faithful relations and mutual exchanges. This „fl ow“ is the basis
for the innovative power and the competence that BAUR places
at your disposal.
BAUR. Ensuring the fl ow.

In 1986 BAUR launches a water content measuring device
in the μg range with excellent properties for determining the
humidity in insulating oils according to the Karl-Fischer method.
In 1987 BAUR introduces oil testers with complete electro-
magnetic shielding which and thus allows error-free oil testing in
hi-tech laboratories with IT-infrastructure and gas chromato-
graphs.
In 1988 the BAUR DTL oil tester revolutionises testing
technology. It is the fi rst device combining automatic measuring
procedures for the dissipation factor and specifi c resistance of
insulating oils.
In 1989 BAUR introduces another innovative highlight: The
smallest portable oil tester with a test voltage up to 60 kV, ideal
for fi eld use with battery operation.
In 1995 BAUR develops the RBM technology. With the Real
Breakdown Monitoring, only actually completed breakdowns will
be identifi ed.
In 1996 BAUR converts all oil testers to power amplifi er
electronic voltage generation. This ensures stable test voltage
and limits the breakdown energy so that deposits on electrodes
caused by gas formation and carbonisation will be minimised.
In 2008 BAUR presents the completely new developed series
of oil testers. The BAUR DTA 100 C, BAUR DPA 75 C and BAUR
DTL C instruments are characterised by the most modern meas-
uring technology, maximum effi ciency and user-friendliness.
Milestones in the history of insulating fl uid testing:
In 1952 BAUR presents the
smallest oil tester for break-
down measurement of
insulating oils. The revolution-
ary, fi rst portable devices
enable onsite testing.
In 1965 BAUR introduces
the fi rst fully automatic oil
tester in the world. The device
working with a punched card
determined the mathematical
average value independently.
In 1968 Development of
the „BAUR Propeller“ for
circulation of the insulating oil during the complete test
sequence. With this method the dispersion of breakdown
series is improved and later incorporated in the US standard
ASTM D 1816.
In 1970 BAUR introduces the hermetically sealed oil test cell.
It keeps out ambient air and thus increases the precision of the
breakdown voltage. Equally innovative is the fi rst-time use of an
electronic triac switch-off in oil testers. It reduces the switch-off
time to < 1 ms, thus reduces the switch-off energy and reduces
the gas formation in the breakdown series.
In 1975 BAUR is the fi rst manufacturer to introduces a
transport test cell for taking oil samples. This minimises impuri-
ties in the sample during transport and curroption of the
measuring results.

costs due to failures and accidents. It is highly economical to
defer high investments such as the replacement of insulating
oils as long as possible for an optimum exploitation. A cost
example: replacement of the insulating oil in an 80 MVA trans-
former at an oil price of 2.50 € and a requirement of about
15,000 litres means an investment of approx. 37,500 €. The life
time can be maximised through exact determination of the oil
quality, which subsequently improves the profi tability.
