(Band of Brothers) (Generation Kill) Battle to the Screen Film revolutionized war, in that it opened the publics eyes to the hell of battle Directors today and in the past have studied war and the men who fight it, in order to bring the most authentic war film to the audience Tactics, psychological insight, warrior- culture, and camaraderie Making Battle Tactics are key to making the film as realistic as possible Band of Brothers, The Pacific, and Generation Kill are examples using historical battles and their tactics to reflect the real war The Assualt on Brecourt Manor, a historical decisive skirmish, was represented in Part II of Band of Brothers (Assault on Brecourt Manor) The Warrior; The Audience Connecting the individuals of the audience to the characters portrayed in war films, has been Characters like Eugene Sledge in The Pacific offer much emotional attachment between the character and the viewerwatch?v=r8U9NB0OIlk (Sledge) ~Tom Hanks~ What we're doing with Band of Brothers is trying to put it into human terms, so it is not just a flickering, black and white myth on a screen, it is a resonant story. (Tom Hanks) The Making of the War-Film Props weapons, costumes, vehicles Location Effects squibs, sound, soundtrack (Black Hawk Down) In a land far, far away Filming location changes due to government regulation, dangerous areas, and national landmarks Locations must bear some natural reflections to the original battlefield, but for the most part can be modified to resemble any country. (Saving Privat Ryan) Arming the Men Weapons- rubber, blanks, suicide guns Costumes- originals, manufactured, fake Vehicles- fake, government provided (World War 2 Weapons) How they blow crap up! Squibs- tiny explosives that release compressed air that is activated by a detonator in the actors sleeve. Flat out blowing crap up (Big Explosion) Sound Film sounds- added in during editing process, most sounds are not present during filming. Soundtrack- composition, cultural influences. (Saving Private Ryan) (John Williams) The beginning, the middle, and now the end War-films have and always will be a central part of movie culture They define generations, people, and the men who fought the wars They give insight to the many wars that have been fought throughout history.
