A quality k-12 education from Battle Creek Public Schools

unlocked a world of opportunity for Terry Burleson.

A 2005 graduate of Battle Creek Central, Terry is an

example of the many students who thrive in our

uniquely diverse learning environment that offers

more choices and more experience that lead to

educational excellence.

Under the caring leadership and instruction of Battle Creek

Public School’s dedicated staff, Terry received the knowledge

and inspiration to follow his dreams. His high school counselor

at BC Central saw Terry’s potential and encouraged him to

consider attending the University of Michigan. And he did

just that, with great success.

After graduating from one of the top universities in the

country, Terry has now returned to Battle Creek Public Schools

as a member of our outstanding staff, working with students to

help them understand the importance of a college education

and how they can obtain it.

At Battle Creek Public Schools, our students are

going places. And we help them get there.

The place to be, the place to stay.

Where are you going?

Terry Burleson—

a journey of success from BCPS to Uof M and back again

THINK ABOUT IT!Children of alcoholics are 4 times more likely to

develop problems with alcoholhttp://www.nacoa.net/impfacts.htm

Several decades of research showsthat some teens are more at risk for

developing a substance abuse problem than other teens.

www.drugfreebc.org

4 Common Risk Factors Associated with Teen Drug and Alcohol Abuse:1. Family History: Family history of drug or alcohol problems can place a childat increased risk for developing a problem. Children can inherit genes thatincrease their risk of alcoholism, so having a parent or grandparent with alcoholproblems may indicate increased risk for the child.2. Mental or Behavioral Disorder: If your child has a psychiatric condition likedepression, anxiety or ADHD, he or she is more at risk for developing a drug oralcohol problem. Although not all teenagers with these disorders will develop asubstance abuse problem, the chances are higher when they have difficultyregulating their thought and emotions. 3. Trauma: Children who have a history of traumatic events have been shownto be more at risk for substance use problems. Therefore, it is important for par-ents to recognize and address the possible impact of trauma on their child andget help for their child. 4. Impulse Control Problems: Young people who engage in more dangerousrisk taking generally have a higher tendency to use substances and experiencenegative consequences.*Source: Parenting Practices, Help reduce the chances your child will develop a drug oralcohol problem parent toolkit wwwdrugfree.org
