Activity #1

Part I (20 min)

Scenario: You signed up for the latest reality television show where you are brought to an unpopulated area to live for one year. A small house will be built for you to stay in for the year, and you have a choice in some of the design. You have a list of common household items that can go in your house, but you can ONLY select three. The items are a refrigerator, an oven, a microwave, a dishwasher, a washing machine, an air conditioner, a television, and an indoor toilet. Which items would you pick and why?

Before you pick, consider these things about your location:

- It is very hot and humid all year round

- You are alone without access to other people

- There is a portable toilet already set up a half-mile from the house

- Clothes, sheets, dishes, and food will be supplied

IN NOTEBOOKS, Write down the items you would choose and explain your reasons. Pick a representative from your group to share your decisions with the class.

Activity #2

Part II (25 min)

Now refer to your list from the Bell ringer again. Work with your table groups and use the classroom computers to find out when these items were invented. You may chose to make a “better” list after watching the video clip. Create a timeline using these dates.

Timeline should include the following:

- Picture and date in correct order.

- Highlight in Yellow the items that have been invented since you were born.

- Highlight in Blue the items that were around when your parents or grandparents were young.

Activity #3

Part III (15) Now design YOUR OWN APPLICANCE of

the FUTURE! It should do at least 3 tasks. Sketch a picture on the end (or back) of your timeline and label what it does.

TURN IN POSTER BEFORE YOU LEAVE TODAY!

Guidelines

If a home has only one bathroom, it should be a full or three-quarter bath located off a main hallway.

If a home has more than 1 bathroom, the most common arrangement is to locate at least one full bath in or near the sleeping area and a half-bath near the living area
