PRINCIPAL REPORT SEMESTER ONE REPORTS Over the next few weeks teachers will complete students’ semester one reports. The report format will be similar to that used last year with students receiving information and a grading regarding their achievement in each subject area taught. A five point scale is used to describe the achievement of each student – outstanding, high, sound, basic, and limited. These grades are used to show how a student is achieving against the material taught in each subject. They describe the quality of the work a student has produced not the student’s ability. These grades are not a pass or fail. If a student receives an “Outstanding” achievement it is indicating that the child is performing extremely well and is regularly applying their skills, extensive knowledge and deep understanding to new situations. A “High” achievement may be awarded if a student is performing very well and has consistently met the outcomes at a high level for the reporting period. This will have been evident across a number of assessments and tasks. PRINCIPAL REPORT SEMESTER ONE REPORTS

Over the next few weeks teachers will complete students’ semester one reports.

These students will also demonstrate the confidence, skills and understanding that are going to enable them to easily extend their learning in the area. A “Sound” achievement means that your child is learning what he or she is expected to learn at the level appropriate to their grade. These students are where they “are supposed to be” in terms of achieving the expected curriculum standard at this stage of their learning. A “Basic” achievement is telling parents that a student has achieved some of what she or he is expected to achieve, but that there are some gaps in knowledge and skills. These students are not quite where they “are supposed to be” at this point in time. A “Limited” achievement indicates that a student has demonstrated only a limited amount of what is expected for students at this point in time and that there are very significant gaps in their knowledge and skills. This indicates that students achieving this grade are quite a way from being where they “are supposed to be” at this point. CYBER SAFETY PARENT FORUMS DURING STUDENT DISCOS (REPEAT ARTICLE) Our next SRC student discos will be held on Tuesday 30 May. During this time, I will be hosting Cyber Safety Parent Forums in the school’s library for parents and carers. Senior Constable Kerie Wells, one of our School Liaison Police Officers will present these short, informative sessions addressing a number of cyber issues such as safety, bullying and crime. Senior Constable Wells will also be able to answer specific queries parents may have. The forums will be organised so parents can drop off and collect their children from the disco. The K-2 disco will run from 4.30 – 5.30 pm, with the Parent Forum starting in the library at 4.35 pm, finishing by 5.15 pm. The 3-6 disco will run from 6.00 – 7.00 pm, with the Parent forum starting at 6.05 pm, finishing by 6.45 pm. We will provide light refreshments, so for catering purposes, could you please return the RSVP slip attached to this newsletter.

ROAD SAFETY FORUMS NSW Centre for Road Safety, Transport for NSW, is inviting all NSW schools and their communities to attend a road safety forum to inform the development of a new road safety plan to reduce the number of serious injuries and deaths. The forums are being held in May 2017 and give schools and community members the opportunity to:

• identify and discuss road safety issues of most concern to you

• discuss possible countermeasures and initiatives to making our roads safer.

Safety is a shared responsibility and your input is needed. Please share this invitation with your school staff and community members. Transport for NSW has further information available. http://roadsafety.transport.nsw.gov.au/aboutthecentre/strategies/road-safety-plan-2021/index.html THANK YOU On behalf of our BBPS community I would like to acknowledge and thank Fergus Taylor for his service on our P&C. Fergus has been an active member of the P&C for the last 9 years, serving as an executive officer for a number of those, including as President for the last 5. Fergus has had to resign from his current position as Vice President due to a change in his work and family circumstances. We have valued the many contributions Fergus has made, both in his leadership and personal contributions to many facets of our school. Thank you Fergus! KISS AND DROP OFF ZONE Kiss and Drop Zones are designed for your convenience and for your child’s safety. Designed for quick entry and exit, these zones minimise congestion and risk when used properly by all parents and carers. These zones operate under the same conditions as no parking zones, which means you may stop to drop off or pick up children for a maximum of 2 minutes. PREMIER'S DEBATING CHALLENGE On Tuesday 16 May 2017, the Year 6 debating team travelled to Killarney Vale Public School to participate in two rounds of the Premier’s Debating Challenge. The team, Sophie O, Jasmine H, Lily P and Lilliana J went up against Avoca Public School in the first debate for the topic “All kids in years 5 & 6 should watch the news every night for homework”. It was a terrific debate, with both teams creating a challenge for their opponents. The second debate against Killarney Vale Public School saw the team debating for the topic “School uniforms should be banned”. Although our team narrowly missed a win on both debates, they learned a lot from the experience and represented the school with pride. We look forward to the next debate later this term. Thank you to Donna S for helping to transport the students to and from the event.

SOCCER On Tuesday 16 May BBPS Boys and Girls Soccer Teams played against Brooke Avenue in the PSSA Knockout Competition. The boys played first and displayed amazing persistence throughout the whole game. A spectacular penalty save by Jack and a goal from Finlay kept the boys' score to 1-1 at full time. They proceeded into extra time where they unfortunately conceded a goal leaving them with a 1-2 loss. The final score was not a true reflection of the tremendous effort and sportsmanship the whole team displayed. The girls had their game after some very enthusiastic cheering supporting the boys' team. Ruby collected a very quick hat-trick of goals and Tnika finished off with her debut goal. The girls came away with a 4-1 win and will proceed onto the next round of the knockout competition. Their teamwork and support to each other was a fabulous reflection of our true BBPS sporting style. Both teams should be extremely proud of themselves in their commitment throughout the whole game. Special thanks to our parent supporters, Miss Fahey and our guest coach Miss Brewer. GIRLS AND BOYS 7S RUGBY LEAGUE On Wednesday 17 May, 10 boys and 8 girls travelled to Wyong to play in the Central Coast Rugby League 7s competition. The boys played 4 games and won 2 and the girls played 3 games and won 2. Both teams just missed out on making the finals rounds. GIRLS REPORT The girls trained hard to prepare for this event. Chelsey, Bronte, Brooklyn, Kiarna, Zoe, Caitlin, Victoria and Posie made up the girls team. Mrs Strange and the accompanying parents were so impressed with the courage, determination and skills the girls showed whilst playing. The girls went down 4 tries to 2 in their first game but went on to win their next two games convincingly. I am sure this is a day the girls will never forget and the school is very proud of them for giving the sport a go. Thank you to all the parents who transported their children to the game and Brett for filling up the water bottles. Kyle and Adele Coordinators

WINTER SPECIALS Boys Trousers* *discontinued item NOW $10.00 Girls Bootleg Trousers NOW $20.00 Thank you Melissa Uniform Shop Co-ordinator E: [email protected] CANTEEN HANDMADE HEALTHY MENU ITEMS ARE A HIT! It’s great to see so many of our young customers and their families getting behind our healthy handmade menu range. Much consideration is given to deciding which meals the children will like best, so it’s great to see demand for these kinds of menu lines so strong. Pictured below is a sample of the handmade menu items our

canteen has to offer. Healthy Macaroni Cheese

NEW - LATE ORDER ONLINE ORDERING OPTION Missed the 9am online ordering cut off time? Don’t worry, there’s any easy solution. Just log on and you will now have an option to place an order up until 10am. The menu will be slightly smaller than the main menu, but there are still a number of popular lines to choose from. Orders can be placed at www.flexischools.com.au A LITTLE MORE HOUSEKEEPING As previously mentioned in our last newsletter, the canteen is not able to provide cutlery for lunches brought from home. The canteen can supply cutlery for lunchboxes at a cost of 20c. We suggest keeping a pack of plastic spoons/forks just for lunchboxes just in case the metal ones don’t make it home again. Thank you, thank you!

Hearty thanks to those members of our parent community who’ve so generously answered the canteen’s calls for help. It’s been a pleasure to meet so many new faces and it’s a pleasure to have you on board. The kids and I are very grateful. And yes…we’d still love you to join us if you haven’t done so already. Donna Canteen Manager CHAPLAIN CHAT – MIND THE GAP Have you ever been on a train before when they announce to “please mind the gap”, giving you warning to step over the space between the train and platform? I’d love one of those announcers in my head sometimes! The gap between what I see, know and understand and what other people see, know and understand is often quite a big space. Often our children come home with lots on their minds, a difficult time in the playground with friends, tricky work in class making them feel silly or someone pushing into them. Our children need to know that as parents, we see, hear and understand this from their perspective. It’s also totally appropriate to “please mind the gap” for our children and give them opportunities to understand things from a different vantage point. We can learn to see things as someone else might to help balance out the picture and jump over the “gap” in understanding. As we help to expand their way of seeing situations, it can help grow resilience, compassion and thoughtfulness in their lives. Thinking of you this week as you “mind the gap”. Go for it! Cheering you on in your parenting, Sue Cornish (Chaplain)
