Bass traps are used to provide acoustic absorptive treatment in rooms and are common tools used in architectural acoustics. They are particularly useful in the acoustic treatment of home theaters, recording studios, mastering suites, and other venues built to provide a critical listening environment. Bass traps provide a means to control room reverberations at low frequencies, a part of the audible bandwidth especially troublesome when critical listening venues are located in small rooms. Like all acoustically absorptive materials, bass traps function by turning sound energy in a room’s air volume into minute amounts of heat through friction. A common misconception regarding bass traps, is that they remove all the bass from the room. This is in fact false, rooms that do not have any or sufficient bass trapping are commonly described as having a boomy or muddy sound, whereas a room that has been properly treated will have an articulate, punchy bass sound. A question we are often asked is “ I’m not playing drums or bass guitar in the room, do I still need bass traps?” The answer is yes, any room it serves as a critical listening environment can benefit from bass trapping. 1 of 6 125hz 250hz 500hz 1000hz 2000hz 4000hz 0.74 0.95 0.12 1.11 1.07 1.07 Sound Absorption Coefficient (NRC Val 1.05) Updated Feb 2013

Placement

The best place to mount bass traps is in corners. We recently had an acoustic simulation done for us by Comsol Multiphysics, that perfectly illustrates this point. The bright red areas in Fig.3 show the bass hot spots of the room at 108hz. Figure 4 shows where bass traps should be palced in a room.
