BAPTISM: Baptisms are customarily performed on Sunday at 2:30 P.M. Prior arrangements with the parish priest or deacon must be made as far in advance as possible. The Godfather and Godmother should be practicing Catholics. Our Baptismal Program meets at 7:30 P.M. on the second Monday of each month in the Parish Center.

PENANCE: Confessions are heard on Saturdays from 4:00 - 4:45 PM. A more convenient time may be arranged with the parish priest by calling the Parish Center.

MARRIAGE: In order to prepare adequately for the life-long commitment to the Sacrament and to arrange to participate in a Marriage Preparation Program, we ask that you make arrangements with the priest or deacon of your choice at least six months prior to the date of the marriage. Because of the Sunday Mass schedule, Nuptial Masses are normally celebrated on Friday evening or Saturday. Weddings should take place in the proper parish of the bride or groom.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION: Our Parish Religious Education Program and Our Lady of the Hamptons Regional School strive to sup port and complement the responsibility of parents to be the primary teachers of the children they have co-created with God. Our Religious Education Program, which includes preparation for First Penance. First Eucharist and Confirmation, is a family centered, continual formation extending from Grade 1 through Grade 8. Our Ministry to high school students continues this formation for grades 9 through 12. Pastor’s Column Pastor’s Column Pastor’s Column Advent, 2012 Dear Parish Family, When I was a child, the time between Thanksgiving and Christmas seemed impossibly

long. To me, Christmas was a miracle of friends and family, gifts and gatherings. A remarkable man in a red suit knew exactly what I wanted. He somehow managed to deliver

gifts to me and to every other child in the whole world all on one night. The four week wait of Advent seemed to me to be a lifetime.

Things are different now. Somehow Advent seems impossibly short. Cards to send, gifts

to buy, sales of a lifetime that must not be missed — and just four weeks in which to do it all. As a priest, there are extra prayer services to lead, homilies to write, confessions to hear, and about

15 Christmas pageants to attend. And that doesn’t even include all those shepherds and angels in my own family! Like many adults today, I still look forward to Christmas — for relief.

In the middle of all this, a commonly seen sign reminds us to keep Christ in Christmas. Now that is a good idea but for some it seems to be another task in a busy season. I have a

different take. To me, the Christmas / Advent rush is a perfect parable for life. It is the most wonderful

time of the year but in the stress and busyness it just flies by. The symbols of light and gifts and friendship are perfect signs of God’s presence but we sometimes miss their true, deep meaning.

God is so near to us but we are so occupied and preoccupied that we barely notice God’s presence. God is near to us in the people around us, in the simple joys and even sorrows of every

day, and especially in the only people who don’t seem to be caught in the rush — our children. During these Advent days, may you know the presence of God in the most unexpected

places: in the midst of frenetic preparations and in the midst of life. And keep an eye out for the

little ones – children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, students, children with parents in the mall – who are sure signs of the surprising presence of God in our midst.

MAKE A PLEDGE TO DEEPEN YOUR FAITH Have you noticed the cards at the base of the Advent Wreath? Each card is a pledge made by one of our parishioners to commit them-selves: 1. To a spiritual practice that will deepen their own faith. Examples are participating more fully in the mass, attending a talk, or reading a spiritual book. 2. To pray for one other person who is struggling to grow in their own faith. It’s not to late to pledge. Cards are near the wreath and in the back of our church.

PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU ARE REGISTERED AT SACRED HEARTS OF JESUS AND MARY. REGISTRATION FORMS ARE AVAILABLE BY CALLING THE PARISH OFFICE AT 283-0097. Parents of children who will be entering first grade in September: If your child is entering the first grade and you want him/her to receive the sacraments in the parish, it is time to register them for the Religious Education Program if they are not attending Our Lady of the Hamptons or some other Catholic School. Religious Education Registration forms are now available on the parish website: www.shjmbasilica.org. Please remember that children are required to attend each year from first to eighth grades, in order to be prepared for the receiving of Confirmation in the eighth grade. Also attendance each week is a must unless the child is sick or has a good reason for missing a class. Please encourage the school and coaches not to schedule games or practices on Wednesday afternoon or evening or Sunday mornings. It is up to all of us to encourage the importance of Religious Education in our community. Please check the website for meetings and Announcements. OUR LADY OF THE HAMPTONS Last minute tickets for the annual Bucks for Books raffle to benefit the school programs at OLH are available at the school. The grand drawing will be held at the conclusion of the Christmas Show on Monday evening, December 17! A first prize of $15000 will make someone’s Christmas a little brighter! Tickets can be obtained at the school office or by calling 283-9140. This is one of the year’s largest fund raisers that helps to supplement the operating budget for the school.

Three hundred people crowded the OLH auditorium for the annual family Advent Service, during which the crèche and Advent wreath were blessed and the tree illuminated. Eight student lectors prepared the Scriptural reading and were supported by the Hamptones and Joyful Noise choruses as well as the Junior and Senior dance Troupes.

The Christmas musical, “everywhere….JOY!” will be presented at OLH on Sunday, December 16 at 2PM and again on Monday, December 17 at 7PM at the school. This production features three hundred students in an original script with singing, dancing and the traditional Nativity. There is no admission charged for this event.

Registration for the 2-13-2014 school year will begin immediately after the Christmas holidays. Parents who may be interested in considering pre-school at St. Rosalie’s campus, or kindergarten through grade 8 at the Southampton campus are urged to request information packets as soon as possible. Tours and interviews will be scheduled for January.

Keeping Our History As we celebrate the first year of the dedication of SHJM as a basilica I invite everyone

to take a trip into their attics and photo albums! We would like to compile a history of

our parish through stories, pictures, news clippings, announcements, and even video.

with us. You may dedicate them to our archive or simply have us copy and return the

Catholic Ministries Appeal—Almost to our Goal! With just a few short weeks ago our Catholic Ministries Appeal total stands at $47,080, just a few contribu-

tors short of our goal of $54,200! We began December at just a little over $45,000 but some generous con-

tributions have brought us close to our goal. The CMA is important to our diocese because it funds much

needed programs in Catholic Charities, the education of new Priests and Deacons, and support for our

schools. It is important to our parish because when we reach our goal we earn a substantial rebate to use

right here in our own ministries. Making our goal this year will bring more than $10,000 back here to Sacred

Hearts. Could you be the one to put us over the top with a generous Christmas gift to the appeal? Make a

December 16—Third Sunday of Advent Years ago, the trick question on religion quizzes would be to name all the liturgical colors, or

the colors of the vestments worn at Mass. Rose is a color seldom seen, used at most two days a

year. Today, "Gaudete Sunday," is one of those days. The name of the day is drawn from an

opening verse in the old Latin Mass texts: Gaudete is Latin for "Rejoice!" This year's Gospel

certainly reflects that mood as Elizabeth feels her infant within her leaping for joy at the

presence of Mary. Mary's visit to her aged cousin is an act of compassion between women, as

two kinswomen who are bearing children into the world share their joy.

Some churches retain the custom of having the priest wear rose vestments today, and many

will use a rose candle in the Advent wreath. Violet is the official color for Advent and Lent,

but many parishes employ different hues for each season, trying to keep them distinct. In

medieval times, dye was costly, and poor parishes used unornamented plain cloth for

vestments. Dyes were expensive and some colors, particularly purple, difficult to achieve. In

England, purple dye was made from mollusks, yielding at best a deep indigo or blue and not

the desired violet. Thus, the color of Advent in the British Isles has long been a deep blue,

reminding many people of Mary's presence at the heart of the Advent mystery. That theology

December 23—Fourth Sunday of Advent In ancient pagan Rome, these days in mid-December were a time for general slacking off at

work and far too much rejoicing. The period of leisure after the harvest and a whole cluster of

pagan festivals were a force for the church to reckon with. The Saturnalia, breaking out on

December 17, was a time of high living and loose morals. Christians were advised by their

bishops to drop out of the mayhem and do some serious fasting. A famous church council at

Saragossa in Spain made a season of fasting mandatory from December 17 to December 23,

exactly coinciding with the Saturnalia. The bishops at that time were perhaps less concerned

with preparing for Christmas than with resisting the kind of loose living going on.

Modern times have restored a bit of the Saturnalia spirit to our culture, so that a general

period of partying with a vague connection to religion is now upon us. How does a Christian

keep balance? The practice of charity by remembering the poor in our gift‑giving, of

hospitality in finding a place at our holiday tables for the poor and lonely, and of daily prayer

in the home and at church are great helps. Although Advent is not a penitential season like

Advent Reconciliation The Parish Family of Sacred Hearts will join with churches

throughout our diocese to offer a day of reconciliation on

Monday December 17 from 3 to 8 PM in our Church. During

this time our priests will be available to hear confessions and

celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation. It is wonderful way

to prepare for the great feast of Christmas by receiving this

sacrament of God’s healing love.

¡Alégrense siempre en el Señor!- ¡El Señor victorioso ya está en medio de nosotros, llenándose de regocijo y danzando de alegría! Jesús se alegra en su nacimiento, a través de su madre María. Él se gloría en hacerse uno de los nuestros. Él recibe jubiloso nuestra respuesta a la Buena Nueva proclamada por Juan Bautista: bautismo con agua y bautismo con el Espíritu Santo y fuego. El Bautismo que Realizará el Mesías - Hoy se palpa la alegría del pueblo que vislumbra el cumplimiento de las promesas que Dios le ha hecho a través de la presencia de Juan el Bautista. Juan responde e interpreta sabiamente las preguntas que otros le hacen, pero su sabiduría provoca que muchos se cuestionen si él es el Mesías; obviamente, también aclara rápidamente que no lo es, explicando que su bautismo con agua es diferente al bautismo que realizará el Mesías, el don de Sí mismo, el Espíritu Santo.By Juan J. Gaudete - Hoy es domingo Gaudete ("alégrense", que viene de la primera palabra de la antífona de entrada en latín). Se enciende el cirio de color rosa y también se puede usar la casulla de color rosa, indicando que el tiempo de espera está por terminar. Las oraciones y las lecturas (incluso el salmo responsorial) de hoy están repletos de la emoción y alegría y nos anuncian que nuestra salvación está muy cerca. El profeta Zefanías y san Pablo nos exhortan a que nos alegremos en Dios-con-nosotros: Emmanuel. Requisitos para el Bautismo de un Niño Curso: Para bautizar a su hijo, es necesario que los padres y padrinos asistan al curso pre-bautismal. Traiga consigo el acto de nacimiento del niño. Padrinos: Debe escoger a los padrinos conscientes de los requisitos. Los padrinos tienen que haber recibido sus tres sacramentos de iniciación (Bautismo, Primera Comunión y confirmación) y deben poder comulgar, es decir no deben estar viviendo en unión libre o casados por civil nada más, El padrino (madrina) debe ser un(a) soltero(a) o debe ser casado por la iglesia. Permisos: Si viven afuera de la zona servida por el Apostolado Hispano, necesitan una carta de su párroco.
