What is EnableMath ? • Specialized program
– Combines web-based math software that stresses homework mastery with a retention/success program (partnership between Enablearning and Noel-Levitz)
– Offers students academic as well as personal assistance to increase success rates
– Used each quarter for several sections of Math 210 (pre-alg.), Math 112 (beg. Alg.) and Math 114 (int. alg.)
– COST is $70 per student (online license) – No book needed
EnableMath Involves Three Interventions
• Computer Software that gives students opportunity to practice math problems in the lab with the instructor and outside the lab
• Administration of the College Student Inventory (CSI) with results given back to students
• Inclusion of counseling services in the classroom to provide interpretation of the CSI and out-of-classroom assistance on non-academic issues
CSI• What is it?
– Survey used to increase student success improve student retention enhance advising
• Internet based or paper-and-pencil• Mandatory: Students in the program must take
the CSI
CSI• When is it given?
– Currently: In the lab during the 2nd week of school (most successful)
– Can be taken on any computer with an Internet connection

https://www.noellevitz.com/Our+Services/Retention/Tools/Retention+Mgmt+System/Samples.htm (View CSI Samples)
CSI• Counselors
– visit classes after CSI is given – bring personal reports for students to the
lab; explain report; meet with willing students after the presentation
– Email all students inviting them to visit the counselor
– phone or email at-risk students (indicated by the CSI) who did not respond to email inviting them to meet individually with the counselor
EnableMath Software – Visualizations for better understanding– Examples– Homework is done online (mastery) in lab
and outside of school– Homework problems are adaptive– Quizzes/some tests done online– Management system tracks student’s
progress (for the student) & provides grade book (for the instructor)
– Students work from a customized syllabus that is easily created by the instructor
– Mail system

Results from Andrew LaManque, De Anza Researcher 2005 - 2007
(Pilot vs. Control)
• EnableMath classes (pilot) fill first each quarter
• End-of-class student survey indicates students believe program helped them learn more math
• Less students drop out: Pilot Pre-Alg. 10%, Pilot Beg. Alg. 10%, Pilot
Int. Alg. 8% Control Pre-Alg. 20%, Control Beg. Alg. 24%,
Control Int. Alg. 26%
Results from Andrew LaManque, De Anza Researcher 2005 - 2007
(Pilot vs. Control)
• Pass rate: Pre-Alg. 72%; Beg. Alg. 71%; Int. Alg. 75%
• Rate of students attempting the 2nd course after completing the first course:
Beg. Alg. after Pre-Alg. 80%; Int. Alg. after Beg. Alg. 81%; College Level Math after Int. Alg. 62% (all higher than control group)
• After two years, Phys. Sci., Math & Eng. Dean recommended to continue the program
