Marin Luther King, Jr. was born at high noon January 15, 1929. He was born in Atlanta, Georgia his family’s home. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a strong advocate of non-violent social reform. He held a variety of ideas from various cultures, yet all his ideas revolved around peace and equality for all. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Martin Luther King, Jr. believed in non-violent means of social reform. He promoted this style of change through his actions and speeches. Martin Luther was the son and grandson of ministers. He himself, in 1951, earned a Bachelor of Divinity degree from Crozier Theological Seminary. In 1955, Martin Luther received a Doctoral degree from Boston University. While in the seminary, King learned of Mohandas Gandhi’s non-violent philosophy. During a trip to India, King met and spoke with supporters of Gandhi. As a result of these discussions, King confirmed his conviction toward peaceful resistance.

Martin Luther King, Jr. led a bus boycott during his pastoral at a Baptist church in Montgomery, Alabama. Approximately ninety other individuals, including King, were arrested for this action. The beginning of the Civil Rights movement occurred during the late 1950’s. After King’s return to Atlanta, Georgia, he continued to arrange numerous, peaceful protests toward the inequities extended to African-American individuals. In 1955, Martin Luther King received his doctorate degree in theology. While in the city of Montgomery, Alabama, he noticed that African-American ind ividuals had to ride in the rear of public busses. King knew this was illegal and organized a boycott of public busses in this city. Any individual, regardless of race or ethnic background who supported this action refused public transportation. Some of the people who boycotted were attacked, threatened, and even arrested! It took 382 days of boycotting before the Supreme Court stated that the segregation occurring in Montgomery, Alabama, was unconstitutional.

More than 250,000 people gathered in Washington, D.C., on August 28, 1963. The death of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a shock to many people. The Civil Rights movement did not slow down or even cease upon his death.
