MISTAKEN IDEAS ABOUT PRAYER

1. A simple psychological activity2. An effort of concentration to reach a

mental void3. Reducing prayer to ritual words and

postures4. Taking prayer as incompatible with all

other things one does; having no time to pray

5. Overly prizing production and profit6. Exalting sensuality and comfort

(C 2726-27)

DIFFICULTIES IN PRAYER

1. Distraction – it reveals our attachment

2. Dryness – in contemplative prayer, no

taste for thoughts, memories, feelings

3. Lack of faith – simply giving up

4. Acedia – spiritual sloth or laziness

(C 2729-33)

Page 9: basic prayers.ppt

NOT GETTING WHAT WE PRAY FOR

1. No – we are not asking what we really want, but what we think we want.

2. Wait – God’s timing is different than ours.3. God knows what we need but he awaits

our petition.4. He waits for our prayer because he sees

that what we need most is prayer, patience and conformity to His will.

(C 2729-33)

Our Father who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come.

Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread,

and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who

trespass against us,

and lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.

Turn, then, most gracious advocate, thine of eyes of

mercy toward us; and after this our exile, show unto us

the Blessed Fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O

loving, O sweet Virgin Mary!

THE LORD’S PRAYER

“It is the Lord’s Prayer because it comes to us from the Lord Jesus, the master and model of our prayer.”

- C 2775

“The Lord's Prayer is the most perfect of prayers. . . . In it we ask, not only for all the things we can rightly desire, but also in the sequence that they should be desired. This prayer not only teaches us to ask for things, but also in what order we should desire them.”

-St. Thomas Aquinas(also C 2763)

ROSARY

“To recite the Rosary is nothing other than to contemplate with Mary the face of Christ.”

- Pope John Paul IIRosarium Virginis Mariae

October 2002

The Rosary, though clearly Marian in character, is at heart a Christocentric prayer.

Page 33: basic prayers.ppt

Knights of Columbus

“Without contemplation, the Rosary is a body without a soul, and its recitation runs the risk of becoming a mechanical repetition of formulas, in violation of the admonition of Christ: 'In praying do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do; for they think they will be heard for their many words' (Mt 6:7).”

- Pope Paul VI
