Vista Enterprise
Vista Ultimate
XP Proessional
XP Home
XP Media Center
XP Tablet
XP Proessional 64
You cannot upgrade rom Windows 2000 or Windows 9. x.
You can upgrade rom Windows XP (both 32 bit and 64 bit versions).
When upgrading, make sure that both the hardware and the sotware are
Vista compatible.
File Systems
When dual booting, consideration must be given to the C:\ drive, which is th e
active partition used by the BIOS. Every OS installed on a computer needs
to be able to read C:\ as that is where the start-up fles will reside. When dual
booting, you will need to select a fle system or C:\ that is compatible with all
OSs installed. For the exam, the ollowing table will be sufcient:
File System NTFS FAT16 FAT32
Operating
System
NT4SP4
Windows 2000
Windows XP
Windows Vista
DOS
Windows 9x
NT4SP4
Windows 2000
Windows XP
Windows Vista
Windows 95 (later)
Windows 98/Me
Windows 2000
Windows XP
Windows Vista
Microsot recommends using NTFS frst, ollowed by FAT32, then FAT16.
Remember that NT4 cannot use FAT32 and Windows9x (Windows95, Windows
98 and Windows Me) cannot use NTFS.

Program Compatibility AssistantThe Program Compatibility Assistant should start up automatically when Vista
detects that a legacy program ailed to install.
The assistant uses a database o settings you can add to this database using
the Application Compatibility Toolkit.
Application Compatibility Toolkit (ACT) 5.0The Application Compatibility tool kit is available rom Microsot and can
perorm the ollowing actions:
n Investigate networked computers and identiy the applications installed
on them.
n
Report on proposed deployments and spotlight potentialcompatibility problems.
n Manage compatibility evaluators and settings.
n Create reports o application compatibility.
n Transmit compatibility inormation to the Online Compatibility Exchange.

Windows Integrity Control (WIC)WIC establishes a security scheme based on Mandatory Access Control (MAC).
There are a number o authentication systems in common use; however, most
commercial Network Operating Systems have based their security model on
Discretionary Access Control (DAC).
DiscretionaryAccess Control
Every resource (e.g., a fle, older, or printer) has anowner who has complete c ontrol over it. The owner
edits the resources access control list to speciy who
can have which type o access.
Mandatory Access
Control
The owner is not the fnal authority. The System (or the
system administrator, in some cases) defnes what rights
(i any) an owner can assign. MAC is much more secure
than DAC; however, it is more complex to manage (which
is why it is popular in secure military products).
With Vista, Microsot inserted an additional test into the security system. You
may recall that in previous versions o Windows a request rom the network to
access to a older on a NTFS partition was tested twice:
Access control pre Windows Vista
Vista adds a third test which, like the other two, must be passed:

BitLockerBitLocker is a low-level disk encryption system which works at the sector level.
Once started, BitLocker acts invisibly to th e User, so there is no need to set
individual encryption, as in EFS; or example:
n BitLocker works at a low level in the kernel so it is transparent to most
applications (however, Microsot has written hooks so that other applica-
tions can make use o the service).
n BitLocker uses a secured hardware module to hold the primary encryption
keys (there are several types o keys).

The module can be one o the ollowing:
Technology Details
Trusted Platorm
Module (TPM)
A TPM is a dedicated security module integrated
onto the motherboard. Vista is compatible with
TPM version 1.2 or later. The TPM handles a number
o security eatures notably:
n Key generation
n Secure key storage
USB memory pen In practice, BitLockers key system works dierently
by using a USB pen. For one thing, the keys are
generated rom within Vista. The USB pen must be
inserted beore Vista starts and the PC Hardware
must have the capability to access it without the
aid o an OS.
Boot Process Integrity CheckVista splits the fles needed to start it up into two portions:
n Files the BIOS uses to select a version o Windows including Vista
(the Start-up fles)
n The actual fles to start up that version o Windows (the Boot fles)
The drive holding each o the groups is given a special name by Microsot:Active
Partition (or the start-up fles) and Windows OS Partition (or Vistas fles
proper). Usually, Windows Vista will install to a single partition with both sets o
fles on the C:\ drive; however, this situation is not acceptable when implement-
ing BitLocker. This is because BitLocker runs rom within Vista proper: the start-up
process cannot handle the encrypted sectors. So, to implement BitLocker, you
need to separate the two groups o fles onto two partitions.
For example:
C:\ is active and holds the start-up fles and is not encrypted by BitLocker
D:\ holds the Visa boot fles and is encrypted by BitLocker.
I using a TPM, BitLocker can provide some protection to the star t-up fles. The
TPM specifcation provides or 24 platorm control registers (PCRs) although
only 11 are in current use. Each PCR can be used to hold a fngerprint o a
critical part o the OS. The fngerprint is created by the TPM frmware. The PCRs
are used as ollows:

Testing and Troubleshooting IP
IPCONFIG
Command Provides
IPCONFIG Displays basic settings
IPCONFIG / ALL A m or e d et ai le d li st ing, i nc lu di ng DNS s er ve r
and the MAC address; however, there is a quirk
in IPCONFIG /ALL such that i a WINS server is
not confgured, then it does not include a WINS
entry at all.
IPCONFIG / Re le as e I ns tr ucts IP to dro p a DH CP lea se
IPCONFIG /Renew Instructs IP to attempt to obtain a new DHCP lease
IPCONFIG /RegisterDNS Instructs IP to attempt to register the computers
DNS name with its confgured DNS Server
IPCONFIG /FlushDNS Empties the local DNS cache (including
negative registrations)

Wireless Networking
Term Meaning/Functionality
Wireless
Networking
Literally, networking without wires; however, this is
usually taken as connecting computers using radio
requencies and protocols conorming to IEEE 802.11 a, b,
g, or n standards.
Access Point
AP or WAP
It is oten convenient to think o an AP as a switch which
connects its member stations wirelessly. AP can perorm
simple switching unctions, or include more sophisticated
capabilities such as a frewall, DHCP, etc.
SSID Service
SetIdentifer
Unlike a wired switch, you have no physical connection
method. Instead, you speciy the name o the AP with the
SSID. By deault, most APs broadcast their SSIDs so Vista
can automatically detect them. As a security measure, this
can be disabled, meaning that the SSID must be entered
manually on the computer to enable connection.
Ad Hoc network A group o computers communicating wirelessly, but
without the aid o an AP. Microsot considers Ad Hoc
networks as incapable o encryption or authentication.
MAC
Address Lists
A security eature in an AP in which an administrator
confgures a list o MAC addresses rom which connection
requests are accepted. Each Network Interace Card (NIC)
holds a unique numerical number that identifes it out
o all the NICs ever built. This is known as the NICs Media
Access Control (MAC) address and is included on all
transmissions rom the card.
Encryption Obscure data so that hackers cannot read i t. The two
methods currently in use are WEP (poor) and WPA/WPA2(much better).
R ADIU S An e xte rnal a ut he nt icat io n s ys te m u sed t o centr al ize
authentication or multiple APs. RADIUS can also be
used to gather statistics. Microsot Windows 2003 Server
contains IAS (Internet Authentication Server), which is a
crude RADIUS server
