They will be adhering to the state guidelines for COVID-19 throughout the season.

After being away for a whole season because of COVID-19 restrictions, the Hot Rods will be back with many new and added features, beginning with a new coaching staff and manager. Jeff Smith will manage the Hot Rods. He has 20 years of experience for several teams, and since 2016, he has been the first base coach of the Minnesota Twins.

Eric Leach, chief operating officer and general manager for the Hot Rods, has more to say about what is new: “Please help us welcome to the ballpark Turbo, the Hot Rods’ official Bat Dog. If permitted because of COVID-19, Turbo will retrieve players’ bats and take game balls out to the umpire. The Hot Rods have also built two new Lawless Orthodontics’ Birthday Decks for fans to host their private birthday parties during games. Another new thing is the Hiller Outdoor Suite area that now

David Allen Faxon start-ed Western Auto in the late 1930s in downtown Bowling Green. His son,

Dave Faxon II, worked in the store as a young man and took over in the 1960s. So many still remember the Western Auto at 440 Main on the square. He carried many products that the com-munity needed, including automobile parts, firearms, tires, bicycles, lawn-mowers, and home appliances. Dave II ran the store until 1990.

Dave Faxon III began working for his father at a young age. When he was of age, he entered the Air Force. When he came back home, he worked at Logan Aluminum, then a few con-struction companies, and lastly for his dad again.

With the growing success of large chain stores like Sears, Roebuck and Co., J.C. Penney’s, and Walmart inch-ing out small businesses, Dave Faxon III opened Faxon’s Outdoor Power Equipment (OPE) in 1992 on Dishman Lane. In 1998, he moved Faxon’s OPE to Twelfth and Chestnut Street, the present location of Mellow Mushroom.

BUSINESShas three outdoor gazebos that fans can rent for the game. Each one has outdoor furniture and tables.”

New to the concessions experience is Fanfood. Leach said, “Fanfood is a food ordering app that fans can down-load to purchase their food. They will then be notified when their order is

ready for pickup, or it can be delivered to their seats. This will allow them to bypass the lines and enjoy more of the game, all while helping with social distancing.”

The team’s stadium is well known for hosting special events for our community. On May 28, MercyMe, the

famous and well-loved Christian mu-sic band, will be in concert at the field. Watch for ticket sales and special seat-ing arrangements for the show. The stadium seats will be well marked for social-distancing, and “squares” will be sold on the field for small groups of four to six.

October 23 is the scheduled the return of Bourbon & Brewfest, so save the popular event date. You will be able to check the website for further information as the date draws nearer.

Friday nights will continue with all the fun promotions fans have come to love at Hot Rods’ games, especially the fireworks. All season long, there will be giveaways. These will be highlight-ed by Wander Franco Bobbleheads on Friday, July 2. This year, they will have Red, White and Blue Weekend on July 2-4, with fireworks every night because of reduced capacity.

Leach said, “The Bowling Green Hot Rods are excited to be back for the 2021 season and can’t wait to get started. Our expectations are very high for the summer.” The games, fire-works, promotions, special events, and of course, the food make for exciting summer evenings at the park. Begin to anticipate the good times!

At this location, Dave III hired Jeremy Chap-man for sales in 2002 and Brian Williams for service in 2005. Little did he know at the time that these two would eventually be his suc-cessors.

Jeremy had graduated that year from West-ern with an agronomy degree. From an early age, he had worked on his family’s farm and, while in college, had worked in agricultural and construc-tion dealerships, mostly doing setup and selling parts and pickup and de-liveries. Jeremy says, “When I started, we had five employees and we were busting at the seams for space.”

Brian Williams, his business partner, started as a setup and pickup delivery person in May of 2005. His father owns a small 4-wheeler repair shop in Morgantown. “This is where I got my mechanical aptitude from,” Brian said.

With the commercial mowing business in full swing by the late 1990s to early 2000s, growing pains hit the company again. By the spring of 2005, Faxon’s had purchased the prop-erty at its current location and started construction on a 15,000-square-foot facility. Construction was

completed in November of 2005. In 2006, the new dealership was moved to 839 U.S. 31-W Bypass, its current location.

In 2012, Dave III started a succes-sion plan and proposed it to Jeremy and Brian. They agreed on the plan to stay and run things until they pur-chased the business in 2017. “That is when we changed the name to Lega-cy Outdoor Power Equipment,” said Jeremy.

He continues to explain how the name came into being. “When I was on a six-hour road trip to a dealer’s

meeting in late 2016, I was on a mis-sion to come up with a new name for the dealership that we were purchas-ing. The Faxon family had their legacy for three generations with Western Auto and Faxon’s Outdoor Power Equipment.

“My father, Richard, was an equip-ment salesman for over 35 years in my own family, and my uncle Gary was an equipment technician for more than four decades. My uncle Jerry was in the finance business for over 30 years. I am my Family’s Legacy by continuing to do what my family has done for years.”

Brian’s father, Bobby, has owned an ATV repair business in Morgantown for over 40 years, Williams ATV Re-pair. “My brother Justin and I worked for him as we grew up. I am my fam-ily’s legacy; continuing to do what he has done for years,” Brian stated.

The name Legacy Outdoor Pow-er Equipment (OPE) was chosen to recognize the years already invested by the previous generation serving the

people in this community, and the future generations will be serving customers in the years to come. Jeremy continued, “We recognize the importance of reputable/expe-rienced individuals, quality equip-ment, and superior service. Legacy OPE will be able to supply products to fill the needs of the homeowner’s lawn care, up to the needs of the largest in the commercial landscape industry.”

Legacy OPE has the unique op-portunity to change the businesses and their customers’ lives by simply doing more. Partnering with premi-um manufacturers allows them to help their customers find the right equipment and service parts to get their tasks done as efficiently as possible. Maintaining high stan-dards and keeping up with tech-nology puts them in the position to keep your equipment running for years to come.

Jeremy concludes, “Legacy OPE

SNEAK PEAK NEXT EDITIONIn next month’s article we will discuss all the other credit bureaus as well as provide more information in how to overcome any of your credit report-ing errors.

AUTOMATED UNDERWRITING VS MANUAL UNDERWRITING Just this month the CFPB (Consumer Financial Protection Bureau) reported FIVE Federal Agencies are looking into how Financial Institutions use Artificial Intelligence to support risk evaluations before approving a consumer request for a financial loan. Ironically, the investi-gation will indirectly involve some of the elements mentioned in last month’s article titled the 9 Credit Scores You Never Knew Existed by providing insight into how a consumer’s credit behavior as well as credit reporting errors support quick pros and

cons within the automated decision-mak-ing process.

The early question, is how does it affect consumers? How is AI affected by a creditors input of adverse data? Could the FICO score be considered AI? Can it disrupt loan approvals when data is input incorrectly by your creditors or whom you do business with? Let us take a closer look at one example that is a hot topic right now by using a borrower identified as Sam to provide insight in how the insertion of correct data will negatively impact his credit report by using one of Sam’s creditors.

Sam has 1 collection account re-porting on Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion from the US Dept of Education. Sam has been avoiding his owed debt for years, finally the US Dept of Edu. closes Sam’s account because of no payments received for the last 270 days or 9 months. The account reports closed/transferred with a zero owed bal-ance reporting a 120 day late pay within the account/pay status section and the last pay history field reports the same. Sounds like Sam is getting a FREEBIE because he is not paying his owed debts however the account then is shuffled to 1 of 8 collection servicers for the US

dept of Edu. The new servicer reports a new account under the same adverse section of Sam’s credit report with the last reported owed balance before it was closed/transferred.

Finally, Sam decided to do the right thing, he enrolls in a Rehab program with the new assigned servicer of the US Dept of Edu for a standard of 9 to 10 months. During which time, Sam pays on the loan each month responsibly. The Servicer of the debt closes out Sam’s loan as promised and then places Sam’s account back with the US dept of Edu. The Dept of Edu then reports a new loan with a new account number for Sam to payback. Six months later Sam has been actively doing the right thing making it a total of 15 to 16 months of good pay history towards his original owed debt.

Sam is feeling good about his life, decides after 16 months he wants to apply for an Auto Loan. He checks his credit scores online using a credit monitoring site that he heard about on the radio. Its free must be a good score. Sam signs up online using his phone, reviews his credit scores, gets all excited because it tells him he has a 620. Best he has ever had. Sam visits his local auto dealer, they find him a car, pull his credit but unfortunately, he has a 540 AUTO FICO score. Sam does not really understand, he has been paying on his Student Loan account for the past 6 plus months plus he has a 500.00 secured limit credit card that he only owes 200.00 towards, he makes good money and can afford a car payment.

The car manager does their best to explain the issues but has never been to school or formal training in evaluating credit scores and has no real answer other than he or she has seen this a thousand times.

So, what can Sam do to help himself? Sam has 3 accounts. 1 open and 2 closed however the 2 closed are from the orig-inal debt Sam is paying on. That debt is now good except the account has a new account number which should have re-moved the first closed account as a dupli-cate and or removed Sam’s default history which is located in the pay or account status as well as Sam’s default pay history section, remember Sam did complete the rehab program.

Rock Steady Boxing Bowling Green

BY RUTH ANN D. BOWEN CONTRIBUTING WRITER

“I started Rock Steady Boxing Bowling Green to help my father, David Reese Steffey, through his Parkinson’s

diagnosis. I was willing to do whatever I could to help my dad with this horrible disease,” said Jill Steffey when asked about the program in Bowling Green and how it is helping so many people.

Rock Steady Boxing Bowling Green is an affiliate of the main headquarters in In-dianapolis. It was founded in 2006 by Scott Newman, a former county prosecutor in Indiana who is living with Parkinson’s disease. He created the classes to meet the fitness levels at all stages of Parkinson’s – from the newly diagnosed to those living with it for decades. There are now over 900 affiliates around the world.

A special education/alternative edu-cation teacher of 26 years, Jill retired in October of last year. Jill’s parents moved to Bowling Green in 1989, and she followed in 2002 to take care of them. Her father, David Reese Steffey, was a mechanical engineer at DESA for over 10 years after working at Arvin Auto-motive in Indiana for more than two decades. “He was brilliant, and watching him deteriorate in front of my eyes was extremely hard,” said Jill. Her mom,

Linda, was a speech pathologist for over 45 years and has worked with mentally impaired clients at LifeSkills since 1991. She retired about two years after her husband retired.

Jill continues with her story: “My fam-ily found out about Rock Steady through some friends. I looked into the program, found out what it took to become a coach, and started finding a place. My family started Rock Steady with six ‘fighters’ in October 2016 in a small part of Live Active gym on the U.S. 31-W Bypass. A ‘fighter’ is what we call an individual with Parkinson’s fighting back against the disease. It has continued to grow to 30 ‘fighters’ in a 3,500-square-foot gym that is dynamite to see with all the inspirational quotes on the walls. I do my best to keep the place as positive

COMMUNITYAll along both negative accounts are in Sam’s adverse section of his credit report keeping Sam in a Credit Prison Trap for at least 5 to 7 more years (Depending on the state you reside. N.Y. is 5 years all other states are 7 years) that will remain in a delinquent status. Effecting Sam’s credit scores. Sam created a debt he must pay for his actions. I can’t disagree with that debate however if you look at the problem deeper then ask yourself, Why 2 adverse accounts vs 1? One of those closed/trans-ferred while reporting 120 days late in the pay status section as well as his pay history section> Would not that be considered double jeopardy? The second account reports as a closed rehabilitated collection account. Should both remain on Sam’s account for 7 years?

How can you determine a Risk Evaluation without first fixing the problem? How is the data uploaded, is this correct data, why is the correction process difficult? Why are the bureaus governing themselves? These are publicly traded companies each stock valued from $90 to $1300 per share. That is impressive, especially when you compare the 3 Big Tech Firms, Apple, Facebook and Google are valued less than Equifax, Experi-an, TransUnion and they remain under the radar.

These rules below describe why Sam and others like him should not be overlooked and in my expert opinion why he should not be denied credit when the rules clearly are not being used to benefit Sam. Per the CRRG (Consumer Resource Reporting Guidelines written by former employees of each National Repository known as Equifax, Experian and TransUnion) codes duplicate account reporting are discouraged except within the Federal Student Loan Providers. Per the CRRG codes the last known action should be reported in the pay status or account status however, the US Department of Education has its own rules. Should these rules be applied to Sam’s Credit Report so that he can objectively have his credit report examined manually?

• Per the Department of Education Rules, it clearly specifies that the 270 days or 9 months of reported default months to

be removed from the record. Department of Education Rules 20 USC § 1078–6 (C) Upon the sale or assignment of the loan, the Secretary, guaranty agency or other holder of the loan shall request any consumer reporting agency to which the Secretary, guaranty agency or holder, as applicable, reported the default of the loan, to remove the record of the default from the borrower’s credit history.

• Per the following Regulation 34 CFR § 682.405 (b)(2) The guaranty agency must report to all national credit bureaus within 90 days of the date the loan was rehabilitated that the loan is no longer in a default status and that the default is to be removed from the borrower’s credit history

• For Private Loans that have offered a rehab program

(I) the financial institution chooses to offer a loan rehabilitation program which includes, without limitation, a require-ment of the consumer to make consecutive on-time monthly payments in a number that demonstrates, in the assessment of the financial institution offering the loan reha-bilitation program, a renewed ability and willingness to repay the loan.

After reviewing the above rules, it does not appear the US Dept Rules are being applied universally for Sam. In my opinion the default pay status demonstrates the same definition as the borrower’s default pay history.

Sam’s Credit Report will never make it to a manual underwriter objectively because he will be viewed as a high risk due to too many collection delinquencies which places Sam at higher risk. More important-ly his credit scores will stop any manual underwriting. The main reason is FICO credit scores do not understand the hot plate is hot, it only knows what has been placed within Sam’s credit files. So, when it recognizes adverse items it scores those items based on 5 known ingredients; age, pay history, balance, type of credit and new credit. All Five effecting Sam’s ability to rebound because of how his Student Loan is being reported.

What Sam may learn is that FICO unitl June 2023 is the only authority and credit score provider utilized in 3 specific indus-tries namely Auto, Mortgage, and Credit

Card as well as engaging in new develop-ments, improved coding, more specific algorithms to specific industries mainly approved subscribers to benefit from its educational pay to play events.

So, with this new information Sam is questioning why lenders would even take the time to examine the problem when the issue is not on the lower level of manage-ment but the corporations that rely solely on quick risk evaluations to expedite the workload, increase customer relations as well as justify rate and terms provided to the consumer when/if approved. So how is the problem corrected and how can others overcome an error that does not agree with bureaucratic policies based on risk evalua-tions?

Then you must conclude that the FICO credit score is not manually underwritten they are used primarily in the Automated Underwriting process. Manual underwriting is usually performed when the scores have passed but the other areas of the loan require a closer exam like DTI issues, Asset Issues, Employment Issues which has no bearing on credit report data. Your Creditors who subscribe to the credit reporting agencies are responsible to report your data accurately and are required to follow industry standard codes that best describe your last known entry if they are to qualify as a subscriber to Equifax, Experian and or TransUnion.

Unfortunately, Sam is denied access to an automobile loan per the Automated Rules built within the lenders guidelines to secure a positive credit score grade.

This Artificial Intelligence has been adopted in many forms however how effective can a Lenders Automated Under-writing perform when utilizing AI to predict a future outcome based solely on what data has been provided to accurately determine a consumer’s credit worthiness may be questionable.

The Automated Underwriting can be a great source of technology if its operat-ing based on fairness and equality, but the disadvantages currently outweigh the pros when you take into consideration how it can financially cripple a large sector of our population when credit reporting errors are not corrected or worse, unknown.

as possible.”One end of the gym has several different

kinds of boxing equipment, including speed bags, heavy bags, an aqua bag, spar bars, double-end bags, a Body Action System and tires. The “fighters” do 10 2½-minute rounds with 10 seconds to move between rounds. The other end of the gym consists of 12 stations that help coordinate balance, getting up and down, cardio, fine motor, gross motor and any-thing that doesn’t fit in the other categories. They work for two minutes at each station with 10 seconds to move to the next station. The boxing program helps treat the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease by helping to regain muscle function and mo-bility. Simultaneously, cognitive processes are worked on at each end of the gym. Two things are being worked on, their bodies and their minds. Presently, there are nine classes weekly, meaning three classes for each person.

According to the Parkinson’s Founda-tion, “the disease is a neurodegenerative disorder whose symptoms include tremor, limb rigidity and gait and balance prob-lems. Almost 1 million Americans have the disease, which usually strikes people older than 50. About 11,000 people had Parkin-

son’s disease in Kentucky in 2020.” “It’s been discovered that high-intensity

exercise helps keep the symptoms at the spot, where they are, or reduces them if they start coming as soon as the diagnosis is made. I have seen tremors disappear; people stand up straight and get their funny faces back!

“I manage two homes, all the finances for both houses, and four caregivers for my parents, but I have learned that Rock Steady Boxing is where I am supposed to be. God brought me down here to start Rock Steady Boxing. I love what I am do-ing, and I will ‘fight’ for anybody and their families that have to deal with a Parkinson’s diagnosis,” said Jill.

They also offer a support group for care-givers called Partners Fighting Parkinson’s. The group meets every other Thursday at the gym. Partners Fighting Parkinson’s is the non-profit side of Rock Steady. Donations are always welcome. April is National Parkinson’s Awareness Month. If you would like to learn more about this disease or become a “fighter,” contact Jill Steffey at 270-799-3667. You can email her at [email protected]. There will be an initial meeting for paperwork and an evaluation.

Rock Steady Boxing is a special program for people with Parkison’s. The gym was founded by Jill Steffey who’s father, David Steffey, has Parkison’s. His diagnosis caused her to start the program in Bowling Green as a way to help people who are affected by the disease.

MIDSOUTH BUILDINGS

Quality Custom StructuresBY RUTH ANN D. BOWEN CONTRIBUTING WRITER

Julius Yoder has fond childhood memories of sometimes getting to work with his grandpa, who was in Tennessee’s construction

business. So much so that in 2020, he started his own business, building garag-es and being a concrete contractor. Julius has four young sons he hopes will follow in his footsteps and someday work in the construction business alongside him. “My oldest son, Brandon, now 13, already enjoys going with me on jobs during the summer when school is out,” said Yoder.

Auburn, Kentucky, is the home of Midsouth Buildings, a high-quality, customizable metal building company. Their buildings are used in residential, commercial and agricultural settings. “We build multiple-size buildings with

I t seems to me that quite a bit of what we see online these days isn’t very nice. And truth be known, there never was a time when social media existed entirely without the sharp elbows of those intent on being

provocative, anti-social or just plain mean-spirited. Not even at the very beginning.

What has always been true, though, is the ease and simplicity for anyone with a computer mouse and inter-net connection to say anything about anything or anyone without regard to being offensive, or getting themselves or others into trouble. The mouse-clicker with the tiniest brain and the tiniest heart could, for a fleeting moment and with impunity and anonymity, roar like a lion into the vastness of cyberspace. As if anyone really cared. But over time, things have gotten increasingly out of hand, stirring the winds of change.

It’s my understanding Section 230 of the 1996 Communi-cations Decency Act largely exempts social media compa-

nies from legal liability for what users post on their sites. However, the exemption does not extend to individuals to keep them from being sued for libel or being held otherwise accountable. And now there’s a growing chorus of reform-ers advocating to eliminate the exemption for the platforms. But if they succeed, won’t it likely follow that Twitter, Face-book and all the rest will be forced to censor anything that might put them at risk of being the next flavor of the day for plaintiff ’s attorneys?

Are the platforms concerned? You bet they are. In the aggregate, they already have tens of thousands of employees screening for offensive or otherwise unacceptable content. And these private sector companies have certainly demon-strated their ability to knock anyone off their platforms in their sole discretion. As unpalatable as we may find cen-sorship, is it even the answer when fake names can hide identities? I suppose the platforms could fix this by forcing people to reveal themselves with a credit card or other

means, but they’d lose a substantial portion of their users and suffer the resulting ad revenue decline.

But let’s think about this for a moment. If only we can determine what’s important in our lives, then why do those pontificating on social media, especially folks we don’t even know, believe for even a moment they can change our think-ing to theirs? It brings to mind this rhyming adage: Try to convince a person against their will, and they’ll be of the same opinion still.

And what about those we do know, those with whom we have a personal online connection? We’ve all likely shaken our heads in wonder or disbelief when otherwise sensible and sensitive people inex-plicably write things, or share the thoughts of others, mouse-clicking them out for the whole world to see. Things they might never say in person, especially to someone who’d likely disagree with them. Facebook, for one, recognizes the problem because I can remain a “friend” while blocking from my view all future postings without the other person knowing what I did and becoming offended. And isn’t it a shame it’s come to this?

Here’s an idea. What if all social media platforms would agree to imbed a pause function in their software that forces every post-ing into a mammoth junk drawer (where much of it belongs anyway) for 24 hours, then plucks them out and returns them to the sender with a note: “Do you really want to post this?” It would numb the itchy trigger-finger hovering above our mouse, and keep us from acting impulsively – something most of us have done … and regretted.

The platforms won’t do this, of course, so why don’t we do the pausing for ourselves, and for all those who see what we post? In 1929, the Coca-Cola Co. coined the advertising slogan: “The pause that refreshes.” Perhaps those four words nearly 100 years later can save us all from unintended consequences arising from our acting foolishly in the moment.

And let’s treat our computer mouse or cellphone send button with the respect they deserve. For without them, we couldn’t roar like a lion. Especially at those times when that was never our intent.

MAY/JUNE 2021 23www.270bg.com

We have all heard the stories of treasure hunters – “pickers” – finding something rare and valu-able at a thrift store, estate sale, consignment shop or even old faithful: the yard sale. When

Sally and I first started our antiquing trips, we assumed the people who found the valuable stuff at bargain prices were just lucky. However, experience has made it clear that the key to successful junking is learning what to look for and how to find it.

I keep a list in my pocket of which figurines are real and valuable collector pieces, so I can tell them apart from the many thousands of “made in China” copies. It’s not luck to be able to pick out the rare 1940s German Hummel figurine hiding among the common ones of little value. Most estate sale companies have pictures posted on their websites showing what is being offered for sale. Search through those pictures, and when an item looks interesting, research it online to see if there is any information about its value and age. For example, we saw a child’s rocket ship

riding toy listed on an estate sale webpage. Since we know several grandmothers who love spoiling their grandbabies, we researched the riding rocket, finding it to be a rare antique. Buying the toy at a very reasonable price, it came home with us on Friday, then went to meet its new best friend the very next day. Of course, the grand-ma was happy to have a valuable new antique to show off.

Estate sales are normally at residences, so don’t be afraid to look through the piled-up junk in the basements and storage sheds. We went to a sale in Nashville, held in a beautiful lake house filled with real-deal antiques. Most of the stuff was priced to reflect the value, but there were also a lot of piles in the back of the unfinished basement. After digging around, I came upon a print that looked interesting in a nice antique wood and metal frame. The sellers looked at the very dirty framed print and charged us a dollar. After cleaning the frame, we took it to a consignment dealer we had been using. It sold for a nice profit. Turned out it was a rare print titled “The Widow,” showing a woman kneeling over the grave of

HINTS FOR SUCCESSFUL PICKING

her Civil War soldier with his ghost standing behind her. Another estate sale find was an odd-looking rock on a shelf in the garage. The rock turned out to be a sculpture called “The Ring,” signed by the artist. Our dealer sold this sculpture quickly for several times what we paid for it.

Never be afraid to make an offer on an item that looks inter-esting, but always bargain politely and respectfully. Never act like the item is a worthless piece of junk. Phrase the offer in such a way that the seller can lower the price and feel OK about it. For example: If an item is priced at $50 dollars, offer something like, “I’m interested in this item if I could buy it for $10.” The seller will usually counter with, “I can’t let it go for that, but I can do $30 on it.” A final offer of $20 will usually close the sale.

The important lesson here is to start the bid low. If, in this ex-ample, the bid started at the desired price of $20, then there is less bargaining room, and the final price would usually end up about $30. Never be insulting. I was stationed in Okinawa, Japan, back in the 1970s and the local shopkeepers were open to bargaining over their wares. The Japanese are very polite people and don’t respond well when they are insulted. I was in a store one time and witnessed a good example of how not to bargain. A fellow service-man took a leather jacket up to the counter and told the store owner the jacket wasn’t worth the asking price because it was very bad quality, but he would do him a favor and offered him a very low price for it. The old Japanese man chased him out of the store and told him to never come back.

Yard sales are a good place to get items such as bicycles, furni-ture and clothing at really low prices. This is because the purpose of the yard sale usually is to get rid of things the homeowner has either replaced or doesn’t need anymore. So, it is not uncommon for the seller to take a low offer, just to get rid of it. That same bike or recliner would be much higher in a thrift store, where the owner needs to make a profit to stay in business. Vendors who re-sale purchased items at consignment stores will often buy in bulk from yard sales, because the seller just wants the stuff gone, so

they may accept an offer on everything. Sally and I bought three old movie posters at a yard sale for $10. They were just rolled up without frames. We sold two of the posters online for $50 each and a third for $25 at the consignment store.

Pickers who have their own stores generally have a pretty good idea what they can resell an item for. This knowledge will determine the offer they make. When the item is a rare piece or something they have never seen before, the final offer might be higher. Never assume an asking price online is what an item is worth. When I was new to the buy and resell world, Sally and I were at an estate sale and found some Disney VHS movies for $3 each. We bought a couple of them, and I took a box to the truck to wait for Sally to finish shopping. While waiting, I looked up the movies online. First thing that came up was one of the movies listed on eBay for $5,000. I called Sally and told her to buy all of them. I learned a valuable lesson that day: Sellers can ask whatev-er they want online for an item, but that doesn’t mean that is the value. The value is the price someone is willing to pay for it. I did more research on Disney movies and found they usually sold for $10 or less.

Timing is very important to get the best deals. Go to yard

sales early. The best stuff goes quickly. By afternoon, the merchandise has been picked over for hours. Estate sales are just the opposite: go on the last day, a few hours before they close down. The good finds that were priced high are then deeply discounted, normally 50 to 70 percent off. Even after discounted, they will entertain an offer. Sally and I have lots of pieces of art in our house that we bought on the last day of an estate sale at a price we could afford. One of my favorites is an alabaster sculpture by an Italian artist that has a real value of about a $100. It was discounted to $25, and since they were ready to close the sale and go home, I bought it for $5. It looks good in our living room and is a wonderful story to share with guests.

The time to shop privately owned thrift and antique stores is during the week when not many people are shopping. Those stores will usually bargain, but if

an item is already marked down, that is usually as low as they will sell it for. At flea markets, the bargains are at the tables set up for just that weekend. They are like an organized bunch of yard sales with prices to match. Each of the permanent vendor booths are local small businesses and they need to turn a profit to stay in open.

When Sally first dragged me kicking and screaming to thrift stores, I was amazed how much fun it was. Now she has me hooked, and I have a great time.

We had to open our own booth and start reselling, because we were collecting so much treasure. We started our column to share our experiences and to promote these amazing small businesses. This is recycling at its finest and a great reason for a road trip to an interesting town. Grab a friend or family member and go on an adventure. Be careful, be safe. We all need more adventure in our lives.
