THE CITADEL• Freshman fi rst baseman Drew Ellis had season-highs of four hits, includ-ing two home runs, and fi ve RBIs in last Sunday’s loss at Western Carolina. The two-homer game was the fi rst for a Bulldog since Mason Davis did so against UNCG on May 16, 2013.• Connor Walsh saw his hitting streak end at 11 games Tuesday against No. 13 South Carolina. The senior right fi elder has hit safely in 21 of 27 games and driven in a run in all but eight games, leading the team with 30 on the year.

ETSU• ETSU’s Chris Cook hit .583 (7-for-12) with two home runs, a double, four RBIs and seven runs scored in the Bucs’ series against UNCG last weekend. Cook slugged 1.167.• All three starting pitchers against the Spartans – Jimmy Nesselt, Lee Haeberle and Griffi n Krieg – went sev-en innings.

FURMAN• Freshman pitcher Grant Schuer-mann earned his fi rst weekend start of the season last Sunday and picked up the Paladins’ lone win in the se-ries with Mercer. Schuermann went seven innings en route to improving to 2-0 on the season. After starting the season coming out of the bullpen, Schuermann has started his last three apperances, highlighted by a com-plete-game shutout of Gardner-Webb on March 17 in his fi rst career start.

MERCER• Mercer is catching its stride midway through the season, having won eight of its last 10. The Bears are hitting .307 with 48 extra-base hits, including 17 home runs, while averaging 8.3 runs per contest during that stretch.• Mercer’s. Tuesday contest against Savannah State was suspended with the Bears leading 16-3 in the top of the fi fth inning. Mercer scored 13 runs in the third, highlighted by grand slams from Trey Truitt and Jackson Ware. The game will be completed April 21, at which time those stats will become offi cial.• Kyle Lewis continues to make his case for Southern Conference Player of the Year honors in his fi rst season as the everyday starter in center fi eld. The sophomore tops the SoCon in hits (50), doubles (12) home runs (10) and total bases (92), while also ranking among the league’s leaders in batting average (.382), runs scored (31) and RBIs (26).

UNCG• UNCG’s 4-1 start to its SoCon sched-ule was the best in the Link Jarrett era and matched the 2011 squad that fi n-ished second in the league standings.• Prior to Sunday’s series fi nale at ETSU, the Spartans had scored in the fi rst inning in six straight games.• UNCG has already surpassed its home run total (23) from last season, having slugged 26 long balls this cam-paign.

SAMFORD• After winning two of three at VMI last weekend, Samford split its mid-week games, falling to Auburn on Tuesday and topping Alabama A&M on Wednesday.• Samford freshman fi rst baseman Austin Edens is hitting .455 in his last 11 games with a .705 slugging percent-age, fi ve doubles, two home runs and 13 RBIs.

VMI• VMI won its fi rst SoCon game at Gray-Minor Stadium last Saturday be-hind 6 2/3 innings of 10-strikeout ball from Brandon Barbery. Barbery has three of VMI’s six victories this season.• After struggling early in his fresh-man season, shortstop Jacob Jaye had two hits in each of the three games against Samford. In his last fi ve games, Jaye has raised his seasonal average 75 points.• Outfi elder Brandon Angus moved into second place on VMI’s all-time sto-len base list by stealing a bag last Sun-day afternoon against Samford.

WESTERN CAROLINA• Western Carolina saw the return of preseason SoCon Player of the Year in Jacob Hoyle to the lineup last week-end. Hoyle returned as a pinch-hitter on Saturday and started for the fi rst time since Feb. 21 on Sunday, fi nish-ing 2-for-5 with an RBI.• WCU played its lone road game in a stretch of nine contests when it fell 9-2 in the back-end of the nonconference home-and-home with Atlantic Sun preseason favorite Kennesaw State on Tuesday.

WOFFORD• The Terriers are 23-9 on the season. Since moving to NCAA Division I in 1996, Woff ord has now reached the 20+ win mark nine times (20 seasons). Woff ord has now won 20 or more games in fi ve straight seasons.• Will Stillman picked up two more saves last week, giving him 10 for the season.
