Bruyn the Elder’s Biography

Bruyn was born in Wesel (Cologne), Germany and lived from 1493 - 1555. He specialized in and painted altarpieces and portraits. He later emulated styles from the Italian Renaissance and was elected to the City Council. Founder of a prolific school of portraiture, he died a wealthy man. The school was left in the care of his sons Arnt and Barthel Bruyn the Younger.
