Barry Provo Wins MGCSA Championship At Wayzata CC
Le Sueur Country Club Superintendent Barry Provo shot 76 to win this year's MGCSA Championship at Wayzata Country Club on August 20.
Host superintendent Bob Distel, his assistants Steve Roxberg and Mike Harrington, and the rest of the crew had the course in great shape for the tournament. Blue skies and great conditions made for a perfect day to play.
Provo fired nines of 39-37 to edge Jeff Pint, New Prague Golf Club, by one shot. Pint opened with a 35 but shot 42 coming in. Finishing third was Tom Notch, Bent Creek Golf Club in Eden Prairie, who shot 78.
Jack MacKenzie, CGCS, North Oaks Golf Club, shot an 88 which netted out to a 75 to win the first flight.
Barry Provo 2001 Champion
Second Flight winner was 23-handicap-per Bob Atol, Braemar Golf Course in
Edina, who netted out to a 78. Leif Erickson, Simplot Partners,
captured the Senior Flight with an 85 which was both low gross and low net for this division.
Donovan Peterson, Wayzata Country Club, won the Callaway Division in a scorecard playoff with
John Stapp, Kate Haven Golf Course. Both players netted out to
74s. Joe Buege, Pebble Creek, was closest-
to-the-pin on two of the par 3s. Tom Feriancek, Hastings CC, and Senior division winner Leif Erickson won the other two. Championship runner-up Jeff Pint won the Long Drive contest on No. 10.

Effortless Beauty-(Continued from Page 31)
especially nice during the Midwest's long winters. The bark starts out with a mahogany color that appears to be pol-ished smooth, sprinkled with corky, beige lenticels. It adds greater interest with age when it begins to peel horizontally (see photo, page 17), similar to paper birch. Another orna-mental feature is the large clusters of cream-colored, lightly fragrant flowers that bloom in June (in Northern areas). The species contains considerable variation in bark character, but breeders have selected 'China Snow' for its consistently ornamental bark.
No one has yet determined the northern limit of this recently introduced cultivar. Though the species is general-ly less winter-hardy than the closely related Japanese tree lilac (Syringa reticulata), certain seed sources are hardy at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum. In addition, data from the Morton Arboretum indicate that it is more drought-tolerant than its Japanese relative. Although per-haps not appropriate for the toughest of sites, this selection will add summer bloom and year-round interest to a well-drained sunny site with minimal maintenance.
