Grants for Publication Subvention

While there are many grants available to help fund scholarly research, it can be difficult to find support for

publication related expenses. We’ve compiled a short list of grants that pay for publication subvention:

Whiting Creative Nonfiction Grant

Deadline: To be announced. 2018 deadline was May 2

“This grant is intended to support the completion of multi-year book projects requiring large amounts of deep

and focused thinking, research, and writing at a crucial point toward the end of the process—after significant

work has been accomplished but when an extra infusion of resources can make a difference in the ultimate

shape and quality of the work.”

J.M. Kaplan Fund — Furthermore Grants in Publishing

Deadline: March 1 and September 1 (annual deadlines)

“Furthermore grants assist nonfiction books having to do with art, architecture, and design; cultural history, the

city, and related public issues; and conservation and preservation. Grants range from $1,500 to a maximum of

$15,000. Funds apply to such specific publication components as writing, research, editing, indexing, design,

illustration, photography, and print and binding.”

Columbia University Seminars — Leonard Hastings Schoff Publication Fund

Deadline: Rolling

“Schoff publication funds can be used for indexing, translating, technical editing, illustrating, or other publication

costs of manuscripts or monographs produced under the auspices of The University Seminars in the fields of

economics, sociology, psychology, penology, or the behavioral sciences which have already been approved for

publication. Other funds are sometimes available in other fields, including the sciences.”

Textbook and Academic Authors Association — Academic & Textbook Writing Grants

Deadline: April 30 and October 31 (annual deadlines)

“Publication Grants provide reimbursement for eligible expenses directly related to bringing an academic book,

textbook or journal article to publication, ranging from $300--$1,000. Publication Grants reimburse only those

expenses that are necessary to the publication of the work (not the initial research and writing of it) which

includes image permissions, indexing or copyediting, and publisher fees.”

National Endowment for the Humanities — Mellon Fellowships for Digital Publication

Deadline: April 10, 2019

“Support individual scholars pursuing interpretive research projects that require digital expression and digital

publication. To be eligible for this special opportunity, an applicant’s plans for digital publication must be

essential to the project’s research goals. Successful projects will likely incorporate visual, audio, and/or other

multimedia materials or flexible reading pathways that could not be included in traditionally published books, as

well as an active distribution plan.”

Barbara Deming Memorial Fund

Deadline: January 31, 2019

“We award small artist support grants ($500—$1,500) to individual feminist women in the arts.” … “We are

interested in funding projects which you have begun or are well underway, and for which you have substantial

work to show.” 2019 deadline is for nonfiction and poetry. 2020 deadline is for visual art, fiction, and mixed

genre.

At this critical juncture in young investigators' careers, when funding can be a challenge, the fellowship awards promote higher-risk, and potentially higher-reward, projects.” <<more>> Columbia Population Research Center Seed Grant Program Deadline: Rolling "The goal of the CPRC seed grant program is to help faculty lay the groundwork for intellectually innovative research projects in population, health, and society to the point where they can attract external funding. Substantively, the CPRC is interested in proposals that address one or more of our research priorities. Applications should 1) focus on the CPRC’s four primary research areas; 2) link cutting-edge research in neuroscience with the social, behavioral, or health sciences; 3) propose globally focused research; 4) develop research methodology; and/or propose policy-related research oriented toward pressing social issues in the domestic or international arena." <<more>>

National Science Foundation Division of Integrative Organismal Systems Deadline: Rolling "The Division of Integrative Organismal Systems (IOS) supports research aimed at understanding why organisms are structured the way they are and function as they do. Proposals should focus on organisms as a fundamental unit of biological organization. Principal Investigators (PIs) are encouraged to apply systems approaches that will lead to conceptual and theoretical insights and predictions about emergent organismal properties. Areas of inquiry include, but are not limited to, developmental biology and the evolution of developmental processes, nervous system development, structure, and function, physiological processes, functional morphology,

symbioses, interactions of organisms with biotic and abiotic environments, and animal behavior." <<more>>

International Association of Sound and Audiovisual Archives Research Grants Deadline: Rolling “IASA regularly offers financial awards to encourage and support research and publication within the field of audiovisual archiving and preservation…. IASA will support a research project only if there is evidence that the results are within the scope of IASA's purposes. This includes, but is not limited to the care of, access to, and long term preservation of sound and audiovisual heritage including the development of best professional standards and practice for sound and audiovisual heritage.” <<more>>
