It’s not every January that the field for the big awards looks so open. Nobody is really sure who the forerunners are going to be in any of the Academy Award’s main categories. CanDaniel Day Lewis really sing? Is The Road just too dark, can acomedy like Up in The Air be taken seriously as a contender, does Clint Eastwood really know enough about the physicalpolitics of Springbok rugby? All I can guarantee is that they are all worth watching butnone of them will provide the same visceral intensity ofJacques Audiard’s A Prophet, a harrowing, exhilarating journeythrough the brutal hierarchy of prison life. Finally a word for our film archive/ music/ dance event inFebruary. An unforgettable one off opportunity to see anoriginal work that links Dartington’s past, present and future.

The vibrantly expressive paintings of Séraphine de Senlis were championed by German art critic WilhelmUhde for whom she worked as a cleaner. Yolande Moreau’s remarkable central performance suggests thelimitless mystery of human possibility which for de Senlismeant celebrating the natural world that surrounded herthrough her painting - using a gift she believed was givendirectly to her from God. Truly a celluloid epiphany.

Not only a brilliantly directed and largely faithful adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, The Road is also an unforgettable piece of film-making in its own right. An unnamed man and his young son travel alone through a post-apocalyptic landscape, ravaged by an unspecified catastrophe. Ash and soot hang in the air, it is cold enough tocrack stones and when the snow falls it isgrey. The sky is dark, the cities abandonedand empty, the roads littered with corpses, the countryside deserted save for maraudinggangs eating human flesh to survive. Man and boy head towards the coast, not knowingif anything awaits them there, trying to keepalive the idea of goodness and civilisation in a world where survival is a daily struggle. This is a frighteningly convincing view of a possible future that takes us to places wedon't want to go, and director John Hillcoat(The Proposition) and his collaborators aremeticulous in creating its visceral beauty and horror. It's hard to imagine any actorother than Mortensen bringing the requiredintensity and youngster Kodi Smit-McPhee is accomplished beyond his years. As the world around them is dying, whatendures is the love between father and son, and a final, tender affirmation of hope.London Film Festival

Friday 5 February / 5pmSaturday 6 & Sunday 7 February / 8pmMonday 8 February / 7.30pmTuesday 9 February / 5pmWednesday 10 February / 8pmThursday 11 February / 2pm & 8pmDirector Jason ReitmanCast George Clooney, Vera FarmigaUSA 2009 / Colour / 1hr 44mGiven hugely added significance by the rising tideof lay-offs across the globe, Jason Reitman’s followup to the splendid Juno features George Clooneyat his smooth, sardonic best as Ryan Bingham,a management consultant specialising in the fieldof firing people for companies that are downsizing. His work takes him around the country, helping himpursue his private goal of accumulating ten millionmiles in his frequent flyer account and with it entryto an elite club. Faced by a threat posed by Natalie,a new recruit with a plan to introduce video links whichwould effectively ground Bingham and his colleagues,he talks his way into one last round trip, in which hewill show Natalie the ropes and persuade his boss tostick with the status quo. This time he has an addedincentive, having just met Alex, the beautiful andsassy frequent-traveller of his dreams. With its sharpscript and crisp direction, Up in the Air is a pleasurablestory of a supremely self-sufficient (or perhaps plainself-centred) lone-wolf having to re-assess his priorities. And while Bingham is the film's driving force, Reitmangives his female characters a welcome depth andcomplexity too.

GuyRitchie has shown enough promise to hint that hecan deliver - join us to find out if we’re right.

Still Walking [U]

Tuesday 9 February / 8pmWed 10 & Thu 11 February / 5pmDirector Kore-eda HirokazuCast Abe Hiroshi, Takahashi KazuyaUSA 2009 / Colour / Subtitles / 1hr 50mAlready drawing comparisons to the greatclassics of Ozu and Mizoguchi, Still Walking,Kore-eda's great new film is what theJapanese call a "home drama". It chronicles a 24-hour reunion of the Yokoyama family;the two adult children and their families are visiting their elderly parents to mark the fifteenth anniversary of the death of their elder brother, who died rescuing adrowning boy. There are no 'dramatic'incidents and the tone is generally light and humorous. But during the day and night we see all that unites and divides thisparticular family - and makes it just like anyother. Simple and stunning in equal measure.

Duringthat time they will have created original works for

A hugely successfulevent last year, this performance (at 4.30pm,repeated at 6pm) sees the students performingtheir works live alongside the selected footage. This innovative SWMS project enables the artistssupported by Dartington in the 1930s to inspirethe emerging artists we support today.

Friday 19 & Saturday 20 February / 8pmSunday 21 February / 5pmMonday 22 February / 5pmTuesday 23 & Wednesday 24 February / 8pmThursday 25 February / 5pmDirector Jacques AudiardCast Tahar Rahim, Niels ArestrupFrance 2009 / Colour / Subtitles / 2hr 30mThe winner of best film awards at both Cannesand London film festivals A Prophet may well beboth the toughest and most rewarding film yousee this year. A visceral tale that plays as a crossbetween a contemporary ShawshankRedemption and a prison set The Godfather,Jacques Audiard’s enthralling crime drama is soreal that at the end it’s hard to remember thescenes of stunning imagination that allow youto see inside the troubled soul of its hero. When Malik, a young French Arab, finds himselfin prison with no friends or allies, he goes out ofhis way to be useful to the dominant Corsicangang and its leader Cesar Luciani. After a gruelling rites-of-passage murder, thatliterally haunts him from that moment on, Malikbuilds by slow degrees a power base of his own.Jacques Audiard's vice-like grip on character-driven action cinema rips by in fingernail-bitinganticipation of Malik's brutally authentic travails. His irrepressible nature is brilliantly incarnatedby Tahar Rahim, whose impact is equallymatched by Audiard regular Niels Arestrup as the Corsican boss.

Clint Eastwood reunites with his Million Dollar Baby co-star MorganFreeman to tell one of the most inspiring stories of our generation.Morgan Freeman is stunning as thenewly elected President Mandela whoknows his nation remains racially andeconomically divided in the wake ofapartheid. Believing he can bring hispeople together through the universallanguage of sport, Mandela rallies SouthAfrica's rugby team as they make theirhistoric run to the 1995 Rugby WorldCup Championship match. To take to the field in Johannesburg in aSpringbok shirt was perhaps the riskiest and most astute politicaldecision Mandela could have made, a simple act that both understood andunder-mined Afrikaaner hostility andsaved his country from tearing apart.
