Dear Parents, Carers and Children,
Thank you once again for the excellent feedback which has supported us in collating Barlows’
Curriculum Guide for the academic year 2017 - 2018. The evaluation forms that you
completed last year and the recent questionnaires confirmed that a whole school Curriculum
Guide is extremely useful to you. We have taken on board your suggestions and feedback and
have included a range of updates in the letter accompanying this guide.
Mrs Farrell, has coordinated the guide again this year and has worked closely with me and the
staff to coordinate this information for you.
Through annual consultation with Senior Leaders, staff, Governors and you, we are able to
reflect on the provision that we offer and seek new ways to improve. Once again, through
popular request we have included an academic calendar which was a fantastic suggestion made
by one of our parents. The intention of Barlows Curriculum Guide and Academic Year Calendar
is to give you a comprehensive overview of the opportunities offered to you and your
children.
Thank you for your continued and valued support which is always very much appreciated.

Barlows Primary School
Curriculum Guide
This whole school Curriculum Guide is intended to give you information about:-
What your child will be learning each half term, for the academic year September
2017- 2018.
Educational Visits, approximate costs and how they link to Barlows’ curriculum.
Celebration Weeks, what they are and when they are.
Fundraising days and Awareness Raising days, what to wear and maximum donations.
Sponsored Events
Guest Speakers who add an extra dimension to your child’s education.
Parent Workshops and sessions
Other events in school that support Barlows’ curriculum.
You and your child may find this Curriculum Guide useful as it will:-
Encourage discussion at home about your child’s learning.
Encourage your child to develop independence towards their approach to learning at
home.
Enable you to budget for Educational and Residential Visits as approximate costs are
given and the term in which the visit takes place.
Enable you to organise what your child will need to wear on specific Fund Raising and
Awareness Raising days.
The average voluntary contribution of Educational visits per year, per child and per year
group is £30.00, however, if you are a parent of a Year 6 child and you wish them to
participate in a residential visit (Colomendy/ Barlows Year 4 Sleepover), then costs will
exceed this average. There may be additional opportunities for Educational Visits to take
place following the publication of this document, however, careful consideration will be
given to cost. Last year many Educational visits were subsidised by the school. When
possible we will continue to subsidise trips in the academic year 2017-2018. This will be
indicated on individual trip letters.

Barlows PTA (Parent Teacher Association)
Joining the PTA is an excellent way to bring together parents, teachers and your local
community to raise money and to support the school. It provides an opportunity for
everyone to work together towards a common goal. All parents, teachers and school
staff can get involved even if they only have a small amount of time available.
What does a PTA do?
PTA activity can vary from school to school. Here at Barlows the PTA have helped
raise funds for a range of school items, from Reception outdoor equipment to Y6
leaver’s gifts, as well as raising money through cake sales and stalls at the Fun Day.
These funds benefit all children in the school and are used for the following:
to help the school provide resources and extras for the pupils
to run social events for parents and children
to provide support for school trips and outings and other special events
to run after school clubs
to organise meetings to inform parents about education issues, especially when

Other Opportunities for Pupil Voice
Citizenship (Miss N Williams)
Every half term the teachers for each class choose a child who they consider have been the best
citizen. This means that they have been kind to others, improved their work or behaviour,
carried out a good deed either in school or outside school and generally shown what it takes to
be a good citizen.
After the teachers have made their choices the information is presented to the Citizenship
Board.
The Board consists of a group of teachers, teaching assistants and children who discuss each
nominee and then vote for a winner. The overall winner is presented with a trophy and their
picture is displayed in the foyer of the school. Each winner is given a prize and a summary of
why they were chosen. At the end of each term the Headteacher invites all of the nominees to
afternoon tea which they thoroughly enjoy.
Circle of Friends (Mrs Gardner and Mrs Horlick)
The aim of the group is to provide support for children who have experienced bereavement, loss
or separation, family problems or friendship concerns. The group discuss strategies to help the
children through any difficult times encouraging the children to discuss their feelings in a calm
and supportive environment. The Circle of Friends continues to meet every Tuesday and
Wednesday lunchtimes for junior children.
Snack-a-Pack
The aim of this project is to build a team of children who run a daily healthy morning snack shop.
The children in the team need to be responsible for the ordering of stock, stock taking, financial
management and decision making. As part of the project the children in the team had to apply
for their position and be interviewed , explaining why they would be a good candidate for the
role. Pupils in Year 6 are invited to complete a formal application and letter of application in
order to be considered for the role. They are then invited to interview to gain a place in this
exciting business team.
This process offers pupils the opportunity to gain experience of interview processes and make
connections with the real life world of work.

Diversity and Safeguarding
These are areas that are high on our school agenda and particular key messages are
taught through a variety of subjects e.g. P4C, PSHE. We will be running some
workshops for parents throughout the year to discuss diversity and to ensure that
parents know the school approach.

Promoting Team Work at Barlows
Team work is always encouraged at Barlows. From entry into Year 1 until they leave in Year 6,
children are divided into teams.
In Key Stage 1 the teams are as follows:-

Every day children collect points for their team. Totals are shared during weekly celebration
assemblies and recorded on the Key Stage 1 Team Point Chart in the hall. At the end of
every half term children on the winning team are awarded a Head Teacher’s sticker and a
small prize. Team work is also promoted during events such as Sports Day. Children who run
in races have a chance to collect points for their team. At the end of the event all children on
the winning team are rewarded, regardless of the position they came in the race.
In Key Stage 2 children are divided into four teams:-

sticker and a small prize. Team work is also important for junior events such as Sports Day
when children are encouraged to compete as part of a team. At the end of such events all
children on the winning team are rewarded. *Please note that every year children are regrouped to form new teams. For further information about rewards for good behaviour please refer to Barlows Behaviour Policy.

Curriculum Enrichment
We offer a wide range of curriculum enrichment opportunities across all year groups.
These opportunities focus on different aspects of the curriculum and wider school life,
including culture, the arts and sport.
Culture / The Arts
Modern Foreign Languages
The learning of a foreign language provides a valuable educational,
social and cultural experience for the pupils. The children will
develop communication and English skills that lay the foundation for
their future language learning.
Children from Reception to Year 6 will receive weekly Spanish
lessons; the lessons will promote Spanish in a fun and enjoyable way.
Our Spanish Buddy initiative will continue this year and this involves
children from Year 5 teaching Spanish songs and rhymes to our
Reception children. Year 6 will complete language examination and
this will give the children the opportunity to gain an MFL Certificate,
preparing them well for high school. In addition, the children will
continue to complete their school link projects with Almatomid
school situated in Seville.
We are very pleased that at Barlows we are a ‘Centre of Excellence’
and have most recently been the first school in Liverpool to be
awarded the Gold Primary Languages Mark by the Local Authority.
CLIL
Barlows continues to be part of a Spanish Content and Language
Learning CLIL) programme with pupils in Years 2 to 5 taking part.
They will receive instruction in Spanish language as well as part of
the Maths curriculum through the medium of Spanish. This approach
improves language competence and communication skills, in both
English and Spanish, and develops multilingual interests and
attitudes. This programme is the result of the collaborative efforts
between Liverpool City Council and the Ministry of Education, Culture
and Sports of Spain. We are very privileged to have been selected to
become a part of the Liverpool Spanish sector, as we are currently 1
of 4 Primary Schools in Liverpool carrying out CLIL

P4C
Philosophy for Children is designed to develop thinking and reasoning
skills and to enhance self esteem. With its emphasis on collaborative
and rigorous inquiry, it serves as a powerful educational model for
teachers and children. Broadly speaking, P4C develops four key types
of thinking: Collaborative - thinking with others, Caring - thinking of
others, Critical - making reasoned judgements and Creative -
creating new ideas. P4C typically takes the form of a Community of
Inquiry. Our dedication and commitment to P4C has been recognised
with the award of Sapere Silver Award.
Theatre Productions
Throughout the school year, we have many theatre companies who
come to school to perform to the children (and staff!) The children
have enjoyed performances by the Kosmic Krew, Firehorse
Productions, Xena Productions and Blunderbus. The productions are
always lots of fun, but also have an underlying moral theme which
educates the children about topics such as bullying, stranger danger
and racism.
Choir
Pupils in Key Stage 2 have the opportunity to be part of Barlows
Choir. One lunch time every week, the choir meet with a specialist
singing teacher who trains the children how to use their voices
properly and learn lots of different songs. Over the years the choir
has performed on many occasions such as a concert in the
Metropolitan Cathedral to raise money for Claire House Children’s
Hospice and at Christmas, we visit Fazakerley Hospital to sing to the
patients. Members of the Barlows Primary School choir were asked
to sing the National Anthem with other children from across
Liverpool at the Grand National 2015. This is an excellent
opportunity as it builds children’s confidence and encourages
creativity and team work
Page | 34
Instrument Tuition
At Barlows Primary School, we are very fortunate to have strong
links with Liverpool Music Support Service (LMSS and Resonate). We
feel this is extremely useful for pupils as it raises confidence and
teaches them new skills from a specialist. We offer pupils across the
school opportunities to lean an instrument: Violin/Viola in year 4 and
5, Violin , viola and cello in Year 6, percussion and singing form
reception to Year 6. This is supported by a specialist music teachers
from the Resonate Hub.
Wider Opps with In Harmony-Liverpool Philharmonic
Our highly successful Wider Opps sessions, where children learn to
play a stringed instrument as part of a class orchestra, have grown
even bigger this year. Now all of Year 4 will have the opportunity to
learn either the violin or viola plus children who have enjoyed the
experience so much now have the chance to continue their musical
development in Year 5 and Year 6 with Pathways On sessions. It is a
great chance for the children to learn new skills, demonstrate
dedication and express themselves creatively.
Visits to Emmanuel Church
Junior children are invited to Emmanuel Church twice a year to
celebrate Christmas and Easter. The programme ensures that
children will attend an Easter Service or a Christmas Service every
other year. In conjunction with this the whole school celebrate
Harvest, Christmas and Easter with a service in the school hall led by
Michael Hindley of Emmanuel Church.
Kate Hindley, of Emmanuel Church, also comes into school to work
alongside staff delivering lessons which enrich our RE and PSHE
Curriculum.
Page | 35
Opera Project
Once again this year, our Year 5 children will have the exciting and
invaluable experience to work closely with the European Opera
Centre. Pupils will be able to express and demonstrate their
creativity when planning, preparing and performing their very own
opera production of ‘The Cunning Little Vixen’ written by Leoŝ
Janáček. The children will be able to broaden their knowledge and
understanding of opera and theatre through a range of disciplines
including: drama, production, art & design for set and props and
music. We are very much looking forward to working with Mr
Kenneth Baird (Director of the European Opera Centre Liverpool)
again and will also welcome specialist teachers who will work
alongside the children in putting the production together.
Page | 36
Sports Events
Sporting Teams
Throughout the academic year, children from Years 1-6 have
opportunities to represent the school in different inter-school and
intra-school tournaments and other sporting events. These
tournaments enable children to apply the skills that have been learnt
through curriculum P.E and during after school activities.
Sporting events provide opportunities for our children to develop
their confidence, competitiveness and team work.
In addition to these sporting events the school has access to a multi-
skills coach who work with all year groups, extending the range of
sports and games that the children can play.
P.E
Through Sports Funding allocated to Barlows Primary School we have
been able to employ a dance specialist, who works each lunchtime to
deliver top quality dance sessions. These are a huge success and
thoroughly enjoyed by all the children. We also employ a sports
coach from the Liverpool School Sports Partnership who works with
the children from Y1-6 in curriculum time every Tuesday.
Healthy Start Mornings/ Bike It Breakfasts
Each term we will be holding a Bike It Breakfast and a Healthy Start
Morning. The children will be able to have their breakfast in school-
organised by the Bike It Committee, and take part in Rise and Shine
dances and sing songs from the Wake Up and Shake up initiative
getting them prepared for the school day. Details of dates will be
sent nearer to the time.
Mini Whistlers
During the year, children from Y6 take part in this programme.
The programme aims to develop a basic understanding of football,
refereeing and develop an awareness and understanding for the need
of figures of authority within sport and society. The Mini Whistlers
programme raises awareness of the principles of ‘fair play’, and helps
children unify and enjoy the school environment
Page | 37
After School Activities
Barlows Primary School aims to enrich the curriculum and allow all
children regardless of their gender; educational and physical needs,
to have access to the wide and varied range of after school activities
that the school offers. Many staff give up their time voluntarily and
are committed to enriching the children’s school life. The range of
activities that the school offer provides the children with
opportunities to pursue their hobbies and enables children to
practise other skills.
Here are some of the activities that ran during the year 2016-2017,
to name but a few:-
- Art
- Football
- Allotment
- Netball
- Spanish
- Crafts
Some of these clubs, plus some new additions will run during the
academic year of 2017-2018. If you or your child/children have any
other ideas of new after school activities that you would like to see
in our school, do not hesitate to contact Miss Howarth, who will be
more than happy to listen to your suggestions.
Lunchtime Activities
At different points in the year, we offer pupils the opportunity to
join different lunchtime activities. These have included: choir, maths
hub, dance and coding.
Page | 38
Business/Industry Links
Compact
Our Year 5 and Year 6 children. For one day each term children are
given a project which encourages them to think like real ‘business
entrepreneurs’.
Junior Chef
The aim of this project is to teach and promote cookery and healthy
eating in a fun way. Children will be taught by a qualified chef, who
will help them learn through following a recipe and making the meal
themselves. They will be encouraged to make smarter nutritional
choices by having fun with food.
All classes have access to this experience which also links to the
children’s curriculum.

Residential Visits
Colomendy (Year 6) Monday 11th June-Friday 15rd June 2018.
Colomendy, a Kingswood Activity Centre in North Wales, is situated in a
magnificent setting in the heart of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
The Colomendy residential is an action packed optional five night visit for year 6 pupils. Pupils
take part in a combination of non-stop outdoor adventurous activities such as abseiling,
climbing, caving, zip wire etc, in addition to some ICT based modules and a disco. The week is
a fantastic opportunity for pupils to explore the outdoors with qualified instructors, develop
team work skills and build confidence.
The approximate cost for the Colomendy Kingswood visit is approximately £267 (based on
last year). Further details of payment can be found on the relevant Yearly Planner.
Year 4 Barlows Sleepover
Following the success of last year’s Year 4 sleepover, Barlows will again be hosting an
extended day of outdoor activities for Year 4 followed by a Barlows Sleepover in school for
our year 4 pupils.
Extended Day Trips
The school offers a range of extend day trips to broaden children’s curriculum experiences.
These include:
Rydal Hall
Last year some of our Year 5 children enjoyed an extended day trip to Rydal Hall in the Lake
District. They enjoyed walk along the River Rothay in search of the 400 million year old lake.
Then they enjoyed the spectacular views along the shore before walking through Deerbolts
Wood, to summit of Loughrigg Fell followed by a visit to Rydal Caves. We are hoping to be
able to offer this again this year, subject to funding.
Keswick
Year 5 pupils are given the opportunity to visit Keswick, Lake District as part of their
Geography curriculum. This is an exciting extended day with a range of interesting activities.
York
Year 6 pupils are given the opportunity to visit the historic city of York as part of their
Historical study of the Vikings. Children have the opportunity to visit historic sites and
specialist museums.
Educational Visits
Teachers plan and organise Educational Visits that are appropriately matched to the
curriculum. The trips are a valuable learning experience that can either introduce a new
topic or help to consolidate learning. The cost of trips is kept to a minimum with the school
often contributing at least half of the cost. Whilst contributions to these visits are
voluntary it may be necessary to cancel them if insufficient funds are collected.
On occasions opportunities for trips may arise that we were not aware of at the time of
publishing. To inform you of these types of trips a letter will be sent home well in advance
informing you of the details.

ensure that every child and young person achieves and makes good
progress.

pupil population, receive the award. They engage in a self review

Raising Achievement branch of Children’s Services.

Spanish School of Excellence
In 2012, Barlows achieved the ‘School of Excellence Status’ for
Spanish. This award was achieved through the children and staff
working hard to learn the Spanish language and about different
Spanish customs and festivals. Spanish is an important aspect of
Barlows’ life and it is completely embedded in our curriculum. We
aspire for our children to leave us with an invaluable knowledge of a
modern and foreign language and also with a good basis to learn
different languages.

about other cultures across the world.

School Uniform
Parents are requested to provide a simple school uniform and are asked to support the school by
ensuring that the uniform is worn throughout your child’s time at Barlows Primary School.
Boys: Grey shorts or trousers
White short sleeved polo shirt
Navy blue school sweatshirt
Navy tank top (sleeveless jumper)
Girls: Grey skirt / tunic, pinafore dress or grey trousers
White short – sleeved polo shirt
Navy blue school sweatshirt / cardigan
Navy tank top (sleeveless jumper)
Summer – pale blue gingham dress* as shown in the picture and
black shoes
*pale blue gingham culottes style dresses (as requested by some parents - Summer 2015)
Short-sleeved shirts are easier wear for infants participating in painting or water play.
Waterproof fleece jackets with the school badge on can be worn if you wish. These are very popular
and we like to see the children wearing them. It is your choice whether you purchase these.
Further information about footwear:
In the interest of safety, footwear worn in school must be flat heeled shoes, which must be black.
It is acceptable for children to wear black trainers, however these must be plain and without any
fluorescent or coloured stripes or motifs on. As above, these cause great distraction to children and
cause an element of competition as to who has the “best” brand shoes.
Glittery, flashing and fluorescent shoes are not allowed as in the past these have caused great
distraction to the children who play with their shoes or talk to other children about them when they
should be listening to the lesson.
In the colder months, if you want your child to wear boots for school, it is school policy for your child
to change into school shoes whilst in the building. This is for health reasons as the building is
extremely warm owing to the under floor heating system.
