“Everything big that occurred in the world

occurred in someone’s imagination”— astrid lindgren

At Barefoot Books, we believe in the power of imagining and in the power

of sharing. We are in the business of storytelling. For us, stories are at the heart

of human relationships, so we think it is worth bringing the best possible care

and attention to the stories we create for children. Of course, a good children’s

story speaks to all of us, whatever our age. One of the rewards of working with

children is the way we adults can discover afresh the sense of play and wonder,

discovery and delight that comes with the sharing of a good story.

This catalog brings you the best of the stories we’ve created since we started

Barefoot Books in 1992. Some of them are brand new; some have become

contemporary classics; some bring together the latest developments in digital

technology with traditional printing methods. Like children, we don’t want

the world to stand still! The books and gifts you will find on these pages

are intended to surprise, delight and inspire you. And of course, they are

not just for reading. They are also gateways to all kinds of activities

and experiments, from dressing up to gardening to kite making.

Read on, and let us know what you’d like to see more of.

An Illustrator’s Storywhen barefoot books sent me Ruby’s School Walk, I immediately fell in love with ruby’s

character and connected with her imagination and sense of adventure. she reminded me of

when I was young, pretending that I was lost on an island or captured by pirates. In even my first

sketches, I knew that I wanted ruby’s image to represent her wild imagination, hence her mass of curly hair and her colorful clothing. I also wanted

her to be wearing wellington boots to show her love of being outdoors. I was so excited when Ruby’s Sleepover appeared on my desk. kathryn

white has done a great job writing these stories. I hope you enjoy the illustrations

as much, and I look forward to illustrating more of

ruby’s adventures.— Miriam Latimer

“The white helicopter whizzes up and down and round”

— The Journey Home from Grandpa’s

An Editor’s Storysince I joined barefoot books nearly eight

years ago, the world of publishing has faced some enormous changes and challenges. None

has been more exciting than the arrival of the digital age. we’ve embraced this opportunity

by bringing our singalongs to life in the form of animations. each and every one of these has not

only been tested and checked by our editorial team, but also by barefoot books’ greatest critics

and fans — my two daughters, aged three and six. It always amazes me to see how perceptive

children are from such a young age. It also reminds me that we’re doing the most

important job here — putting books and experiences in their hands that

will set them up for life.— Emma Parkin

Join us. Live Barefoot. We have been Living Barefoot since we started Barefoot Books in 1992. We have gone from working in our homes, surrounded by children, dogs, faxes, cats and couriers, to building a worldwide network of Barefooters. You may have met one. You may even be one already.

So what is Living Barefoot all about? It’s about our children exploring the world around them and finding their place within it. It’s about the power of sharing a story. It’s about all kinds of people coming together to shape young minds.

Close your eyes and imagine a wheel. At the hub of the wheel are the Barefoot Books Studios in Concord, USA and Oxford, England. Our Studios are bookshops, and they are also community centers: places where children and adults can play, paint, explore, make friends, look at the world from different points of view and discover new talents. The spokes of the wheel are artists, storytellers, retailers, librarians. Moms, dads, uncles, aunts, grandparents. Scientists, poets, potters, cooks. These are just some of the people who become part of our Barefoot Books family. Many become Barefoot Books Ambassadors, who run their own businesses selling our imaginative and educational books and gifts, bringing art, story and adventure to their communities along the way.

Come along and join the caravan. You’ll find out more in our Studios, through our network of partners, all over the digital landscape and, of course, in our books. Hop on board! It’s going to be a fabulous journey.
