No more complaining
Everyone complains sometimes. We all sometimeswhine to our buddies about something we wish hadgone differently to make ourselves feel better. For oth-ers, though, complaining has become more than just an occasionalway to let off steam; it has developed into a chronic habit. And some-times we really want to tell that buddy who is always going on and onabout what’s wrong with his life to knock it off, but we don’t know how.The chronic complainer needs an accomplice. He approaches us as ifto share his feelings, but then gets carried away and ends up bendingour ear, telling us all his frustrations, using words like “always” andnever” to convince not only us, but also himself of just how dire his sit-uation is. We in this sector have beendoing nothing but complaining aboutthe current economic crisis for monthsnow, as if we thought that the solu-tions that would save our butts weregoing to arrive from who knowswhere. Paradoxically, we seem tothink that if we share our complaints,we will feel lighter, but the truth is, weend up feeling more and more inse-cure because we are convincing our-selves and each other of our ownimpotence. Behind this tendency tocomplain often lies a subconscioustendency to repeat childish dynamics, in which crying was the only waywe had to get attention or express our dissatisfaction. As adults, if thismechanism is perpetuated, it exacerbates to become an almostaggressive imposition of one’s complaints, yielding the completeopposite of the desired results: instead of evoking sympathy, thecomplainer manages to irritate and alienate himself from his lis-tener. What potential boat-owner in his right mind would allow himselfto be convinced to purchase a boat if our outlook is completely nega-tive and our proposals seem out of step with the times? If we wereaccustomed to complaining when things were going well, how muchmore do we complain now that things have taken a downturn? But thishabit of constant whining is certainly not making things any better. Let’s start with a few banal considerations. Italy was among the nationswith the highest level of personal wealth. Boating enthusiasts are notextinct. Italy is home to some of the most beautiful natural scenery inthe world. We finally have enough berths for boats. The “income-meter”
no longer penalizes us for purchasing a yacht instead of an apartmentin Cortina. The Department of Infrastructure and Transportation has setforth a series of measures in response to requests by professionals inthe nautical sector and has re-established the foundations that allowpleasure boaters to feel that they are once more respectable citizens.Among these measures, the most important aims to free boaters frombeing stopped so often for checks by the authorities. Starting this year,thanks to an agreement between Port Authority and the FinancialPolice, if the authorities stop a yacht and ascertain that everything is inorder, the yacht will be given a sticker to be prominently displayed sothat they need not be stopped again. So what’s left to complain about?
We wish banks would start doing their joband favor new boat purchases throughleasing again. I know of a number ofcases in which potential sales went upin smoke because clients were unableto secure financing from establishedfinancial institutions. And then? Thatboatyards would have more faith indomestic markets. The CEO of a bigforeign company told me he can’tafford to advertise because his budg-et is tied to their expected incomewhich is currently practically zero. It willcertainly remain so if he has nothing to
say to potential buyers. Why should a client by a boat from him insteadof from his competitors? Advertising’s purpose is to communicate thevalue and unique characteristics of what you have to offer and to pro-pose new formulas for purchasing goods. Of course, if you have noth-ing to say, if you can’t think of anything new to spark the interest of yourpotential customers, you’d better not waste your money on advertis-ing. Just look at how the car industry handles it. Mercedes offers a planfor purchasing an 80 thousand euro automobile with a 14 thousandeuro down payment and 24 monthly installments of 300 euros, and ifyou decide after two years that you don’t like it anymore, you canexchange it. I don’t mean we have to go that far, but if we use ourimaginations, maybe we can also turn our flagging sales around. I canassure you that potential boat owners are still out there, sincesales of this magazine are as high as ever. Let’s quit complainingand start hatching solutions.

The final verdict has crowned the 45m FitzroySalperton which, with the best correct time in the last race, wonoverall in Division A and in the Cruising division.Ed and Marty Kane, owners of the 63 year old Bolero – the old-est and smallest boat in the fleet at 22.4m – won Division B.Bolero was designed by Sparkman & Stephens and built atHarry Nevins boatyard in New York.

The 2013 Genoa International Boat Show Companies are looking forward to the 2013 International Boatshow being held at Genoa from October 2nd-6th. Participantsof the last Board of Directors meeting expressed approval forthe realization of an event largely in line with both the demandsmanifested by boat owners and the changing conditions of themarket. Particular satisfaction was expressed toward the newelement characterizing the layout of the event, including a val-orization of the exhibition areas at sea. Similar appreciation wasmanifested for the shortening of the fair from nine to five days.Both solutions contribute to a significant reduction in participa-tion costs of exhibitors, both directly and indirectly, therebyresponding to one of the principal demands raised in past yearsby nautical entrepreneurs.

Cesare SangermaniThe “Grandi della Nautica” prize was awarded to the patron
of the historical Sangermani Shipyard, a recognitionbestowed by the organizers of the Santa Boat Show to
figures of Italian boating who have distinguishedthemselves on a national and international level.
Cesare Sangermani, a scuba diving expert, has participated forover 40 years in over a thousand competitions, both sailingand offshore, having made it to the podium many times. The
prize was awarded to him for the high quality nauticalcraftsmanship, (Ligurian and Italian Productive Excellence) of
the shipyard of which he represents the third generation.

Brunswick Brunswick plans to closedown Sea Ray facility inMerritt Island, Florida:Brunswick Corp said itplans to shutter its MerrittIsland facility in BrevardCounty, Florida, at the endof the June; the plantemployes 205 people. Financial ResultsThe 2012 financial resultsof the Brunswick grouphave been published.Compared to the last fiveyears, the group hassucceeded in navigatingbetter in a very uncertainmarket. In terms of thenautical sector, a slowrecovery has begun in theUS, focused mostlyhowever on outboardproducts, whereas othersare still experiencing thedecline. Sales in Europehave decreased by 15%,but the rest of the worldhas seen a small growth.In general, sales of thewhole nautical marketregistered at $1,002.6million.
MarineMaxMarineMax will have exclusive distribution for the Sea Ray brandacross Florida. MarineMax said it has acquired the sales andservice operations for Parker Boat Company in Orlando andDaytona, Florida. Terms were not disclosed. The acquisition willgive MarineMax exclusive distribution for the Sea Ray brand inFlorida as well as increased territory for Boston Whaler, Grady-White and Sea Hunt Boats. A 4 million square kilometers sea park
The Marian Trench:how many organisms?In one of the most inaccessible places on the planet: 11 kilo-meters deep with a pressure one thousand times greater thanthat on the surface, there is unexpected bacterial activity, tentimes richer than that of the surrounding ocean floor which isless deep. This bacteria, which lives in extreme conditions, isfed by a flux of organic material which sinks as a result of fre-quent earthquakes in the area. This trench was discovered by an international mission whosent a sophisticated robot (four meters tall with a weight of 600kg) to the floor of the Challenger Deep, the deepest point of thetrench. This was followed by the immersion of the robot in theJapan Trench, at 9,000 meters deep, and plans are currentlyunderway to send the robot to the Kermadec-Tonga Trench (at10,800 meters deep), close to the island of Fiji.
The US and New Zealand have formulated an officialproposal to transform an area of four million squarekilometers in the Ross Sea, in Antarctica, into the
biggest marine park in the world. The US secretary of stateJohn Kerry announced this. The proposal is seen favorablyeven by Australia and the European Union who hadpresented an even more ambitious proposal at the lastmeeting of the Commission for the Conservation of AntarcticMarine Living Resources, of which the twenty four countriesand the EU take part in. The opposition of Russia and Chinahad however blocked the initiative, which now will bepresented with the new protagonist at a specialCommission session next July: "It's the highest, coldest, thewindiest, the driest, the most pristine and the most remoteplace on Earth. Its waters harbor sixteen million species,and are a “living laboratory”, said Kerry.

Good NewsThe countries that are signatories to the International Conven-tion on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) – thewhite tip reef shark, the hammerhead shark and the porbeagle– have approved certain regulations regarding the protection ofthese three species of sharks. This decision will serve to slow down and attempt to control thefrantic overexploitation of sharks which is pushing them towardsextinction. The shark product market is a luxury: shark fin soupis becoming increasingly expensive with the sale of fins at up to$135 per kilogram in Hong Kong. The insertion of these threespecies among those at risk serves to regulate internationaltrade, reducing their risk of extinction.

This 49 meter yacht built by the Viareggio ship-yard Rossinavi is a triple-deck performance yacht with alight aluminium semi-planing hull and superstructure, poweredby twin 3,460 horsepower MTU engines.The exterior and interior was designed by Enrico Gobbi’sTeam for design. “To get clean exterior lines and elegant pro-portions, I designed long and sleek windows along the sidesof the superstructure, resulting in a very streamlined look. Inparticular, the narrowness of the sun deck, with its big win-dow, combined with the design of the superstructure win-dows, helps the yacht to appear longer than many in itsclass,” says the designer. The interiors - which can accommodate 12 people plus 11crew members - are characterized by the use of naturalmaterials that create a chiaroscuro effect, intensified by mar-ble elements. Much attention has been given to the lightingto make the best use possible of the space available. Onboard there is a particularly rich entertainment system. Nextto the by now nearly “standard” Kaleidescape system for on-demand TV, there is a complex wi-fi network that lets youhold a video conference even on the open seas.
One of the plusses of this superyacht is located in the relaxation area at the bow on the main
deck (left). In this space - which guarantees maximum privacy and panoramic view - there are
large sofas, lounge cushions and mats, tables. All surrounded by a completely transparent
wall.

With a beam width of 15.6 meters, the Asian-inspired interior, conceived by Sander Sinot, is certainlyroomy. The layout design for both the interiors and the out-door areas were created by Rainsford & Saunders DesignLimited.
The furnishings are decidedly exclusive and luxurious. Themain living area is graced with Asian art. Marble statuesand tables create a refined, almost museum-like atmospherewhich still manages to feel cozy thanks to the harmonious playof lights and transparent surfaces.

The sundeck lounge, furnished with curvedcouches and end tables, leads directly to thesolarium. The cockpit on the main bridgesports a large, rectangular swimming pool flan-ked by couches, deck-chairs and outdoorliving-rooms.
The main bridge offers different areas for rela-xing with huge living rooms furnished witharmchairs and sofas all upholstered in lightcolors set off by dark cushions and shelving tocreate a frill-free atmosphere which is at onceclassic and contemporary. It is essentially an evolution of thealready existing Xpresso line, characterized by betterspeeds and maneuverability. A multi-hull and POD propul-sion system are the brand-new elements of the vessel.

These 58 meters epitomizethe new generation ofHeesen boats: from theinclined area forward of theinclined windows of thewheelhouse to the curvededges of the horizontal lines.

Zero GravityAngela Petitto and Aldo Bruno were contestants in the
international design competition in China, the Lotus Prize, presentingtheir visionary design for a futuristic-styled sailboat characterized by flexibilityand lightness. Their creativity was rewarded with a well-

hat good are contests? Theygive excellence a chance to shine. Whyparticipate? Many would answer, “towin, to get first place.” But the real valueof a competition lies in participating, inbeing given the chance to measureyourself against others. Especially whenwe are dealing with international-leveldesign projects coming from countriesall over the world. Although the two
young Italian designers who reached the finals with their proj-ect for Zero Gravity came with this attitude in mind, the firstselection saw them among the top 18 finalists, and in thefinals they placed second. The scrutiny was tough, accord-ing to Angela Petitto and Aldo Bruno, both in terms of the cri-teria the projects had to meet and because there thousandsof contestants. But the result was extraordinary and extreme-ly gratifying, when they received recognition both for their“deep commitment to research and for their passion fordesign.” “Participating in contests is not only a great way to getknown, but also a great opportunity to exchange ideas. Notonly: it gives you a chance to see how your capacitiesmeasure up because your ideas are constantly beingchallenged.” Yes, because otherwise when you developa project you are limited by market demands orproduction capacities that can often hin-der you from really letting yourimagination come up with cre-ative new ideas.And let’s keep in mind just where theLotus Prize is held: China, where behindits daunting and apparent mass of con-

Aldo and Angela chose to “erase” the distinctions betweenindoors and out, so that all spaces were connected. Theentire design of the deckhouse is sleek and streamlined, rem-iniscent of the kind of aerodynamics inherent to designs forthe automotive industry. The carbon-fiber hull lines are simple, without even anybreaks on its reverse-sheer prow (destroyer); even whenberthed, she exudes a sense of speed and dynamicity withher forward reaching prow and inclined transom.The superstructure lines are crouched for pouncing, toenhance her aerodynamics and to exploit the horizontalspaces to their best advantage. The lights integrated into thestructure disappear when they are off .Her interiors reflect a perfectly balanced, typical marinedesign, characterized first of all by a fluid layout. The curva-ture of the walls varies, undulating in waves sometimes inter-rupted by implosions that seem to be the result of naturaldeformations formed over time. There are three doubleberths, including the master cabin amidships. The twin crewcabin is located at the stern. The materials chosen were 3DForm panels, epoxy resins and polished steel and aluminumalloy trim that highlight the furniture, giving an overall feelingof a dynamic, sparkling sheen, softened by natural lightingand strategically placed spotlights.

Each individual detail on board seems to have been sculpted
by the wind: the ladders leading inside were clearly inspired by
the aerospace industry. The idea was to give the impression
that the interiors were not fruit of a well thought out plan, but
just sort of happened spontaneously.
The furniture is minimalist, but refined, made of carbon fiber
and RAL metallic-varnished epoxy resins set off by natural
fiber cushions, given a lighter feel by the many windows that
provide an optical division between the interiors and the
exterior.

Pierangelo Andreani was born in Sondrio in1947. After completing his studies, his flair forautomotive design took him to Turin, the homeof Fiat Cars, where in 1970 he sketched the stylistic featuresof the Ritmo which would debut at the 1978 Auto Show. In 1972 he began to work for Pininfarina, designing the FerrariMondial 8. In 1976 he was hired by the Argentinean pilot DeTomaso to work with his company in designing for Moto Guzzi,Benelli and Maserati. Nautor’s SwanThe shipyard was founded in 1966 in Pietarsaari in Finland byPekka Koskenkyla, whose goal was to produce highperformance sailing boats of excellent quality. With Sparkman& Stephens he designed the first Swan, which had to befiberglass: none, until then, had never built a boat more thanten meters long with this material, but in the following years itwould have dominated the series production.The first model was the Swan 36 and it sealed the origin of oneof the most prestigious shipyards in the world, synonymouswith quality and reliability. Then Nautor's Swan developedlarger models, all in line with the original philosophy and theSwan 65 is perhaps the most famous, after the victory ofSayula II in the first edition of the Whitbread Round the WorldRace in 1973/74. In the '80s, the shipyard entered a new erawith the appointment of the designer Germán Frers, who hassince then been the responsible for the design of all Swanmodels, reinforcing the vital balance between speed racing andcomfort.

there were boats as important as the Swan 90 Freya - the2000th built by Nautor in Pietarsaari, Finland, and launchedin 2012 - and the Swan 601 Stark Raving Mad - that hadalready arrived at the second place in the Rolex Swan Cup2012. The fleet included the whole range of the Nautor'sSwan shipyard, from the historic patterns of Sparkman &Stephens, as Hokusai (Fin), Lianda (Bel) and Swan Lake(USA), to the modern creations by Germán Frers.The competition began on 12th March, with warmCaribbean breezes and brilliant sunshine, marking thevictory of Selene for the Class A and Swan 53 Music forthe Class B. The route was established by the Committeeand included a 25-mile navigation among the islands, start-ing and finishing in North Sound (Virgin Gorda). In the nextday, without losing the attention despite the dance party atthe yacht club, all boats were present under a wind of 10knots. The route was the reverse of the previous one and,in the Maxi category, the first place of Selene was con-firmed (which left Stark Raving Mad behind for the secondtime) and that of Music in Class B, followed by Arethusa.On both days the show offered by the "cruising" class isworth mentioning, with shorter routes (14 miles) withouta spinnaker and a rating system called "top secret": in thefirst two days of competition the winner was the Swan 44Hokusai.On the third day the two classes joined the starting line andthe clash between Selene and Stark Raving Mad was evenmore compelling, since the first crossed the finish line withonly 20 seconds of advantage. Similarly, the victo-ry in the final race delivered the top of Class B to Arethusa,even if by only for one point.The Commodore of the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, Ric-cardo Bonadeo, was more than satisfied: "The inauguraledition of the event was a resounding success: beautifulyachts, excellent condition and exciting races. Costa Smeralda Yacht club The Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (founded in 1967 by AgaKhan, Andre Ardoin, Giuseppe Kerry Mentasti and LuigiVietti) organizes races for super yachts and world andEuropean championships for different classes. In January2012 it opened a new office in Virgin Gorda where itmanages a marina for superyachts. The so-called "winterhome" has a restaurant that can accommodate over 70people and a bar with panoramic view. The Clubhouse islocated in the North Sound Bay and overlooks the marinawith a garden with lawn, ideal location for events andsocial ceremonies.
The next edition of the Rolex Swan Cup inPorto Cervo is scheduled for September
2014.

Riva, in fact, is a lot morethan just catalogue, but neither is it merely aboatyard history, the glorification of a legendor a photo album. It is a book that, in a trulyunique way, has tried to give everyone, or atleast those who directly involved with Riva,
their say. And so, alongside striking images (boats at sea,motionless on the water in stark profile to accentuate their lines,glimpses of interiors, personalities, and even a pair of newly-weds on board), the volume offers the testimony of restorers,collectors, designers, architects, photographers, managers andstaff, carpenters, ship-owners (famous or anonymous) sharingan anecdote, a recollection or a reflection of their experienceswith Riva boats. There are letters, stories and declarations tomake you reflect, reminisce, or smile. Like that of an owner whothinks of the two engines of his Riva as twin sons: “The onlyones who make me feel euphoric about living.” And, confirm-ing the people-centered nature of the book, it is not laid outchronologically or divided into years or models the boats, butputs the authors of the anecdotes in alphabetical order, givingequal weight to everyone’s testimony, inventors and owners ofthese legendary boats alike.
In the preface by Ferruccio Rossi, CEO of Ferretti Group, weread, “Calling Riva boats ‘legendary’ is easy. What’s tougher isidentifying the set of elements that nurtured the legend. The story of Riva begins in 1842, on Lake Iseo, when a
sudden storm creates what seems like irreparable damage,
destroying fishing boats and leaving fishermen with no means
of livelihood. A young shipwright, newly arrived in Sarnico
from Laglio, Lake Como, performs a miracle: he retrieves
most of the boats and earns the esteem and admiration of all.
Pietro Riva opens his shipyard and begins to build boats like
they had never seen before.

odich, born in Ravenna in 1953,has worked in the commercial field over 18years; in 1996 he joined Ferretti and in 2002he was appointed Chief Executive Officer ofFerretti Yachts, Mochi Craft and Custom Linebrands. Then, in 2006, he also became CEOof Ferretti SpA, the holding company of Fer-retti Group, which he however left in 2007.Since 2008 he has provided specialist advicefor the acquisition of companies worldwide.
He is going to work with Massimo Perotti, of whom he says:"I've known him for nearly 18 years and we have always hada relationship of great mutual respect, even when we werecompetitors. This is why I enthusiastically welcomed this newchallenge as partner and CEO, and I think that together wecan achieve great results".He left the sailing sector in 2007, but in the meantime hehas continued to observe its evolution...For about 14 months, from the end of 2008, I had a non-compete agreement to respect, so at first I was not intere-sted in boating, but I used that time to work for different sec-tors, from luxury jewelry to industrial products. In the follo-wing years, I often had the opportunity to carefully observe anumber of construction sites, working with several Italian andEuropean investment funds.What is your idea about the weaknesses of this system?I believe that weaknesses have not changed significantly andthat the problem of the boat trade is that of not often beingable to combine the fact of being an industry with an almostobsessive craftsmanship.Do you believe that the cause could be the lack of intel-lectual capacity or the lack of high-level managerial figu-res to support top management?
DMost of the time the problem arises from the fact that thosewho have founded a yard have done so with passion, butwithout an industrial background so that not all players areable to emerge and consolidate. I believe that among themajor Italian operators there is definitely Sanlorenzo, becau-se it comes out from a brain which in turn derives from oneof the industrial sites par excellence, as Fiat in Turin was the“great mother” of the Italian industrialization, for better or forworse. When Massimo Perotti got involved in Sanlorenzo, hecounted on a background and a DNA where the concept ofindustrialization was very strong. For my part, I entered theboating sector with Norberto Ferretti in 1996, after havingworked in two very difficult and highly competitive industries(diggers and construction of objects for large-scale distribu-

some of the activities that animated the 13th edition of Azimut-Benetti Group’s Yachtmaster, which took place at the PalazzoHotel in Leghorn, the city which is home to one of the threebranches of the most important Group in the world of private-ly-owned luxury nautical products. The historical headquartersof the Benetti Group, celebrating 140 years of activity this year,are located here.It was this company, founded in 1873, to officially open theannual Yachtmaster. After a brief stop at the reception/muse-um, where display cases exhibit model ships of the last centu-ry, to fit the more than 100 visitors with safety helmets (“safetyfirst!” is the motto affixed on various walls around the shipyard),we moved on to a 90-meter construction site where the com-pany’s executive staff gave their opening speeches. The tour through the shipyard gave us the chance to observeevery phase of the boatbuilding process, right down to the fin-ished product. We could see the various phases of interior dec-oration as well by visiting a permanent exhibition area set up tolet visitors get a good look at all the materials used at every stepof construction. The Group, which owns all four brands ofyachts, Azimut Yachts, Atlantis, Grande and Benetti, has setup a new Benetti sales and service department and launchedthe “client driven quality” project, aimed at creating effective lines

Benetti Group, therefore, is not only about the productionof yachts and megayachts, but also provides financial services,brokerage and management and is present in four marinas(Viareggio, Leghorn, Varazze and Moscow).The meeting unfolded with three days of workshops,team-building and round tables devoted to discussingthe issues of warranties, lifetime customer care andall the technical and legal issues inherent to runninga megayacht, in the presence of top management, technicians and sales managers. Particularly dis-cussed and analyzed was the 2006 MaritimeLabour Convention (MLC), adopted by the GeneralConference of the international labor organization withthe objective of creating a single, coherent document,comprehensive of most of the rules, recommendationsand principles contained in various other conventions. Cap-tains were urged to express their opinions on the Convention, topoint out weak points, in an exchange of views, which clarifiedcertain doubts and misgivings. Repatriation, health care, durationof working hours and rest periods, minimum wage and age ofcrew members were some of the subjects dealt with in the work-shops. “What we really need is a simplification of legislation,” saysMichael Wyer, the British commander of the Gladius, who alsowould like to see a reduction in controls by the authorities. Thepartners of the event (A / Sea Power System, Boero, CGT /Caterpillar, Dockwise, Fraser Yachts, ISS Global Marine Travel,Marina Casa de Campo, Naiad Dynamics, Open System, TeamItaly, Lusben, Rina, Sosema / Shore Crew and Yachtique) wereinvited to submit their proposals and to show their latest prod-ucts to the captains.

It is useless, in fact, havingtrendy furnishings, fabrics and quality mate-rials if, for instance, each space is filled withunpleasant odors, or if the sweet water hasa “weird” taste! But from what may prob-lems of this kind arise? Obviously, from thesimple use of the boat and normal life on
board: they can be outbursts of wastewater cases, of stag-nation of fluid in the bilge, refrigerators full of fishes, etc.The solution for having a perfect sanitation can be ozone,a gas with a characteristic odor present in the upperatmosphere layers and formed instead at low altitude fromoxygen molecules, in the presence of strong electric fieldsgenerated by sparks, electric discharges and lightning.Since its discovery, about 200 years ago, ozone hasalways been appreciated for being a strong oxidant, andtherefore bactericidal, fungicidal, inactivating viruses, eitheracting in water or air. Unfortunately the use of this peculi-arity has been limited until a few decades ago, beingimpossible to store it, for its instability, in cylinders: it mustbe produced at the place of use, since in a short period ittends to return oxygen.But the evolution of electronics has enabled the minia-turization of generators, favoring the possibility of pro-ducing ozone for many sectors: medical, agribusiness,industrial water treatment, elimination of odors, sanitation

TrialsThe English shipyard chose Palma de Mallorca-Puerto Por-tals for the tests at sea. The weather forecast called for calmseas with only residual long waves, and sunny skies. Force3 winds, easily bearable, were blowing in from the south. ThePearl 75 is fitted with twin MTU engines of 1,250 horsepow-er each, with a ZF series 4000 transmission with a millime-ter-precision control joystick in the console. For the test wefill up with about 2,900 gallons of diesel fuel, 1,200 liters ofwater and eight people embark, including Iain Smallridge,managing director of Pearl, Pablo Hayes, Pearl dealer inPalma, and Phil Bourque from Seakeeper, maker of the con-trol system and stabilization of the hull, two of which wereinstalled on board.The test is carried out from the flybridge and I begin pilotingthe boat, keeping her at 600 rpm, with the flaps at zero. Shegets up to 6.5 knots with fuel consumption at about 12 litersper hour. To begin planing, however, takes about 20 minutes.On the other hand, she is heavy enough, and at 1,500 rpmshe gets up to 13.2 knots. Before getting up to 2,000 rpm, Iactivate the flaps, bringing them up to their 50% position andthen press the throttle. At 2000 rpm, we reach a speed of 21knots and consumption rises to a total of 320 liters per hour.She is so smooth and easy to pilot, that it’s easy to forget we

Technical comments on the vesselThe Pearl 75 is built with quality materials, both at the level
of resins that make up most of the hull and wood used in on-board construction, starting with the teak that covers the floor ofthe cockpit and fly (and the dining tables). She has a planing hull,and with the combination of the test engines and ZF pod drivetransmission with joystick, a boat owner could envision travellingwithout a crew. This propulsion option makes for top speeds ofover 30 knots, with a cruising speed of around 25 knots.

are behind the helm of a 23.3-meter boat. She handles sogently, the throttle and rudder respond promptly and thenoise level is very low from up here on the fly. I accelerate to2200 rpm and the GPS rises to 25 knots. I start tacking cau-tiously and tentatively, but feel totally confident when I feelhow safely she responds. So I complete coming about in atotal radius of 50 meters. At this point I face the bow into theoncoming waves, which are easily overcome and I regulatethe flap to 70% and give her more throttle. Top speed is2,450 rpm which corresponds to 29.5 knots, with con-sumption reaching 500 liters per hour. On returning to port Ican appreciate the joystick linked to the engines which, com-bined with a bow propeller, allows a perfect berth even in thewind.

fter producing some traditionalmodels, Ferretti has returned to buildingsporty flyboats. The 690 was first shown atthe autumn Boat Shows in Cannes andGenoa. Docked next to the Ferretti 720, forexample, its design philosophy is clear:three feet shorter with a lower center ofgravity and a sleek exterior. This model isalso the result of collaboration betweenStudio Zuccon, Centro Stile Ferretti andAdvance Yacht Technology. Immediately
evident are the continuous windows lining the saloon all theway to the gunwale. More windows look out from the foreVIP cabin and the master’s cabin located amidships. Thewindows are best appreciated from on board where theyafford an uninterrupted view from cockpit to windshield. The open-space layout hosts a cock-pit facing galley aft ofthe saloon. The internal areas as dinette, galley, bridge andliving spaces are contiguous and adjacent.Below decks between the engines room and the mastercabin are the sailors’ berths, dressing rooms and the headwith separate shower stall. These last two rooms arefound aft of the headboard of the master cabin’s bed. Thisnot only provides some protection from the noise comingfrom the engines room but allows the entire beam widthto be used as cabin space. The sleeping area includes 2or 3 other cabins, depending on the chosen options. Theone we had was equipped with four cabins in addition tothe sailors’ quarters. The VIP cabin was located foremost,while the two other, one double and one twin, cabins werelocated starboard and portside. The bridge that extends

starboard holds all the controls for the various operatingsystems and two displays giving engine data. The trialThe Gulf of Genoa is touched by a very slight breeze andgentle waves diminishing from the previous days. Thethrottle feeds the gas gradually and steadily. As it is, ofcourse, electronic, it has been regulated to avoid brusqueaccelerations. The power of the twin engines can be felt

as the hull rises up out of the water after only about 15seconds and she begins to plane. Even her top speed isremarkable, considering she is a cruising flyboat. Wereach almost 35 knots, but what’s really interesting is thatat 27 knots, she consumes about 150 l/hr less comparedto gas-hogging full-throttle speeds. The rudder handlessoftly and there also the return effect at high speeds. Thesteer by wire system Ferretti 690 uses can be appreciat-ed, but it still takes a 300 meter diameter for her to comeabout 360°. Ferretti preferred to have a more traditionalsystem rather than a Pod, with the advantage of having alarger propeller that works more slowly. The thrust is ade-quate, but the handling a Pod affords is another story alto-gether.
Technical comments about the hullWhile a bit lighter than a traditional Ferretti fly, she isdefinitely not a light boat. The baricenter is low, and thelayout is quite sporty.The hull has been assembled traditionally, without usinginfusion techniques. The bulkhead divides the prow fromthe berths. The hull geometry is variable with a deadriseangle of 12° and spry rails.
The Ferretti 690 uses the Steer by wire system which was developed in collaboration with ZF.
The rudder surface is kept minimal to limit water friction, therefore lowering consumption, but,
more importantly, they are independent of one another, making coming about much smoother.

e tend to think that thathaving a lot of room with lotsof square meters available, especiallyon a boat, makes for comfortableliving, and more often than not, weare absolutely right. Conversely, weassume that a small boat necessarilymeans cramped quarters, but this isnot always the case. On the contrary,the Magellano 43 is a small vessel,
from the Italian-made family of trawlers produced by Azi-mut Yachts. Just looking at her exterior lines – muscular,compact, sleek, “soft” and outfitted with Azimut’s charac-teristic vertical prow – inspires an absolute sense of trust
in this respect.A pair of couples or a family can truly apprecia-
te how, at 15 meters shorter, this “com-pact” version of her older sisters, the
Magellano 74 and 50, displays allthe same qualities they do: no pit-
ching or rocking, no rough slap-ping of waves while sailing, the
Wchoice of planing or displacement sailing, consumptionreduced down to the bare bones, great autonomy, whilestill maintaining the positive interior characteristics of func-tionality, airiness and coziness. We can affirm without adoubt that lovers of this kind of craft will be positively smit-ten with the Magellano 43. In particular, the two fly andhardtop versions make it even more adaptable to users’needs. In the Flybridge version, on the upper bridge, star-board, is a second helm seat, a perfect location to controlthe boat from a birds-eye position or to allow family mem-bers and guests to keep the captain company. Right besi-de the helm seat is a large C-shaped sofa, combined withan up/down table, a mobile bar with an icemaker, sink,barbecue and counter-top. The HT configuration is particularly suited to yachtsmenwho enjoy boating not only on the open seas but also oninland waters. Its low height clearance enables the boat tonavigate smoothly under fixed bridges on major rivers andcanals. It is equipped with a collapsible mast, allowing pas-sage even under the lowest obstacles. With the mast lowe-red, the minimum height clearance from the surface of thewater is only 3.5 m.

Livability on board is decidedly comfortable. The Magel-lano 43 was designed with long trips in mind and conse-quently sports a meticulously studied layout, optimizing theuse of all available space.The living lounge invites conviviality, with the galley locatedaft of the indoor dinette (furnished with a c-shaped sofa towhich additional seating can be provided by pivoting thepilot’s chair) and forward of the adjacent alfresco dinette inthe cockpit. Below deck, despite the spatial limitations imposed by thelayout of the bulkheads and thwarts, the master cabin andguest cabin are each outfitted with a bathroom with sepa-rate shower stall. The craft’s versatility is evident abovedeck, too, where another room can be used as additionalsleeping quarters or for extra storage space. With this inmind, the company has created some extremely practical,specifically-designed, roomy, collapsible containers thatcan easily be stowed when not in use.A winning feature of this, as of all Magellano boats, is surelyits dual mode hull, which allows you to go from normal dis-placement sailing to planing at any time, with its twin Cum-mins QSB 5.9, 305 or 355 hp engines getting up to maxi-mum speeds of between 18 and 22 knots. At least it's worth making some reflec-tion with data in hand.We have collected the data, there have notbeen supplied us by manufacturers. Whenthe engines are tested at the counter, they
never make terms with a fundamental element: water. Thefriction, the thrust of the propeller, the boat's trim are all con-ditions that affect the performance significantly.We had the chance to test the new V8 petrol Volvo 380 hp.
The V8-380 has an exhaust
system protected realized in
aluminum, to reduce weight,
and the flow of the exhaust
gas has been optimized to
obtain the highest possible
levels in performance. The
engine and the exhaust
system are cooled in series
with glycol.

ll group V8 engine 380 is compact and lightweight, with a weight / effect relation extremelycompetitive. At the same time, it is very durable and fuel efficient, thanks to the catalytic converter which reduces the
levels of emissions.>
It was fitted on a Frauscher Lido 686. A few hours later, onthe same lake (Garda), on a sister boat, under identical con-ditions, we tested the 320 horsepower V8, produced byVolvo in 2012. The ideal situation trying to understand the dif-ferences. Has Volvo added only 60 horses to a previousmodel, or has it changed it, has it made improvements for abetter performance?The "more" that we are all enjoy, are all present. The 380 isfaster than the 320. At maximum speed, the difference ismore than five knots. At cruising speed, the difference is evenmore pronounced because it is around seven knots. Thethrust and therefore the acceleration increased too. To takeall the knots, the time is absolutely the same: 27 seconds. Toplane, however, the 380 hp took a second less than the 320,

three instead of four. So far so good, but there are also"more" that are not pleasant. A more powerful engine con-sumes more and it is more noisy. Regarding the decibels, the"more" is not true at low speeds and it is not true for themaximum speed. In these cases the noise of the two units isaligned. The 320 is slightly quieter in mid range cruising. Butthe most pleasant surprise is that of consumption. If you lookabsently at the table you would think that the 380 consumesmore. In fact it is so, especially if the progression of speed isconsidered. At the same rpm / minute, the fuel consumed bythe V8 380 is more than that of the V8 320.There is however a very important variable to consider. Weobserve, for example, the navigation system at a minimumplanning. To gather this data precisely we give gas and let outfirmly on the hull from the water. Then, with a slow and pro-gressive reduction of speed, we check until when the boatkeeps planning. It should not "sit down". It should continueto stay out of the hull. On Frauscher powered with 380 hor-sepower, this occurs at 1,900 rpm, 8.2 knots speed, 14 l / h

of consumption and 74 decibels of noise. For planning withthe Frauscher which has 320 hp, however, 2,470 rpm, 15.1knots, 26 l/h and 80 decibels are needed. It's obviuos,someone might object. With 60 hp more you can plan earlierusing less power, so you consume less (and it goes even slo-wer). It is true, then we try to compare the performance star-ting from similar speeds. At 27/28 knots, for example, the380 hp consumes about 35 liters per hour, while the 320 hpdrinks well 46. Why does this happen? Essentially from thefact that 380 is a new generation. Not simply were 60 hpadded, but also a number of technological innovations. Theweight, for example, is virtually the same. Indeed, the mostpowerful engine weights two kilograms less. What is mostefficient is the variable valve timing, able to always provids theright delivery to the various gaits. The phaser hydraulic opti-mizes the lower levels of torque and the upper ones ofpower. So it could be said that it gives more thrust in acce-leration for planning and saves consumption at maximumspeed. The carburation can be more or less lightand from this also consumption depends. The electronics has allowed to optimizealso this aspect, as well as to reducethe exhaust emissions. The ECM4G, this is the name of the electro-nic control unit, also allows com-plete diagnostics thanks to thedirect connection to the engineharness. In addition, the Volvostern drive fits perfectly with thearchitecture and with this power.And for those who may want tohave the joystick on the bridge tomake mooring operations extremelyeasy.

An open boat, the Voyager 23S is largelyinspired by the biggest model of the Voyagerfamily, the 26S, and does not replace any model in the cata-logue, but on the contrary, expands it together with the 21S(another new model), offering an additional alternative for begin-ners, sportspeople, and anyone who decides to purchase anautical craft, which is both easy to manage (even alone), andtowable. It has high and protective walls that contain accesso-ry pockets and a steel handrail. The console is located centrallyand includes oak wood compartments, an electric marine toi-let and a refrigerator; behind the leaning post, there is a sinkwith the option to combine a gas oven on the side. Below, thewood foot stool offers extra support when navigating stand-ing up. Underneath, there is a 240 liter fuel tank. A comfortableaft sofa occupies three quarters of the deck beam, equippedwith an embracing backrest located on top of the service lock-er, where the various tubes and devices are gathered. On theside of the sofa, an open passage makes it easier to movetowards the stern, while two large vertical scuppers provide ameans of emptying water that makes its way on board. Thefore area stands out for its “diamond” design, which improvesthe onboard living area, reserving a modular sundeck for theguests of this area. The cushions are available in various colorsand contain closed cell stuffing. The extreme fore part, as wellas the locker for the anchor, contain a pleasant wood teak stepladder at the center of the handrail, usable also as a supportbase for getting on or off at the prow.
The TestThe Voyager 23S model that we tested “wore the uniform” ofthe line commercialized by Suzuki Italia, having had the oppor-tunity to test it out during the meeting that the Italian affiliate ofthe Japanese colossus organized on Lake Maggiore. On thestern mirror, there was a nice view of the new DF250Ap, anengine which is extremely generous and moderate in con-
sumption; it was equipped with a 14 diameter 18.5 pass pro-peller, which allowed us to reach 5,800 rpm with the trim at76%. On board together with two other members of the Suzu-ki staff, 140 liters of fuel and the on board equipment, I startedthe engine which, as always, displayed a low noise level. At 700rpm we reached 2.8 knots consuming 2 lt/h, at 2,000 rpmalmost 8 knots with a consumption of 11 lt/h. The hull movedaway from the water at about 2,600 rpm and 11 knots, and atthis point the engine registered a noise level of about 78 dBA.From then on there was an escalation of values which changedwith a certain rapidity and intensity, and at 3,000 rpm we slidon the water at 17.5 knots with consumption at around 22 lt/hand a noise level of 82 dBA. The three spray deflectors pre-sented on both levels offered a good grip during turns and atthe same time helped the hull to plane in 3.6”. This was a resultdue to both the motor and its power, but also the type of HIShull which emphasized the speed. At 4,200 rpm and 28 knots,I set up a decisive move, which began and concluded perfect-ly, without flashes or, a reaction which I was expecting as I hadalready tried other models of the range. Raising the trim to 57%and then to 76%, I brought the engine to its maximum speedthreshold that I was able to obtain, or rather 5,800 rpm, whichcorresponds to a speed of 41.5 knots, 83.8 lt/h consumptionand a noise level of 90 dBA.

The TestWe are in Varazze, and the engine on the Freedom 18 is the996 cc Yamaha 40 GETL, very generous and dedicated tomotorizing hulls under a certain length, even if one hasn’t a nau-tical license. I am very interested in this combination andtherefore, on board with two other people, I release the moor-ings and leave the dock. Quite stable in water even in displace-ment, the Freedom 18 is able to plane in 3.2” at 3,800 rpm andthe speed allowed by the GPS is at about 9.8 knots. It was ableto reach a speed of 25.2 knots with the trim brought to posi-tive for 80% of the ride . At this velocity, I witness a goodmaneuverability of the boat, despite the fact that it is only 5.50meters long. It does not waver and as long as there is a smallwave at the prow it does not cause the boat to jump. This isalso justified by the weight of the hull which is 860 kg unload .With this engine we can also save fuel. In fact, at max speed,only 23 liters/hour are burned, which are reduced to 19 at 5,500rpm and 21.

Something to review, at least in my opinion, is thedecision to offer the outdoor lights as standard, but not the360° service lights, sold optionally.
The walls are equipped with racks, and the width of their
borders allows the installation of holders to be able to use the
boat for fishing, while at the prow they host the steel handrail
which extends until the maximum vertex.

able to accommodate at least two people.
Despite its five and a half meters, Freedom 18 is stable, even
while turning, a maneuver which finds full satisfaction in the

40 Pro is the name of the newboat. She was discovered during the lastboat show in Genova and when she first cameout, she weighed 112 kg and had a 40 HP out-board engine. She also has a big sister namedOrion. The Orion 40 continues to have muchsuccess. The reason? She does not cost a lot,is efficient, and has low-level consumption. Afour-cylinder, four-stroke engine with less than
1,000 cm3 of swept volume, reliable and with a mainte-nance reduced to the minimum. Many boats come with this engine, both those attributableto the Brunswick head office, and those realized by othershipyards. Orion is a stable companion, particularly becau-se of her reasonably priced rafts. F40 Pro has the sameDNA. Completely identical: cylinders, shaped, weight,architecture. The Bigfoot base is different. The reductionrate is decisively elevated, from 1.81:1 on the Orion to2.33:1 on the F40 Pro. A higher reduction rate allows theassembling of propellers of greater diameter. The Mercuryrange is vast and even envisages four blade models. Theresult is a greater push, particularly for heavy vessels. Besides pushing large loads, she is supposed to guaran-tee a good speed and especially, low consumption. Toverify if this is all the case, we tested her out on a chilly dayat the end of winter, at Lake Iseo. It was attached to the

Obviously, the outboardmotor is not a pure 40, but adowngraded 60, whichmeans that it has a powerof 60 hp. The fact is...600 kg is a lotto transport. Just to get anidea, the shipyard envisa-ges a maximum motoriza-tion of 150 hp. We have abit more than a third.Enough chatting. The coldis piercing and so we startthe motor. The speeds are truly surprising, both in terms of velocityand consumption. The F40 Pro is able to push the Marlin630 without many problems. On board, we are three, butcertainly not of feather weight. sing. Working on the trim, we find the maximum velocity at6,020 knots. The GPS registers 26 knots and the flow measurement
about 20 liters. We do some men-tal measurements. At fullspeed, we are able to travel50 miles on 40 liters of gas.If you make do with naviga-ting at 15 knots, coveringthe same distance, 35 litersare enough. One has thefeeling of being on board ahybrid raft as it consumesvery little. The only defectthat I noticed was the noiselevel. Compared
with the Orion 40, the decibels produced bythe F40 Pro are a bit higher, particularlyat high speed. And the price? This isalso a pleasant surprise, as it onlycosts 200 euros more than theOrion 40.
The F40 Pro motor has a vast rangeof propellers available, and
therefore allows one to easily find the rightpitch and material (steel, aluminum, x7 alloy)which better accentuates the motorspeeds depending on the vehicle upon which itis installed.

Finnboat, the nautical trade asso-ciation of Finland, has publicized thenumbers for the industry’s performance in2012: sales amounted to 477.6 million euro, a14.9% decrease from the previous year, butthe outlook for the current year is lookinggood. According to data, sales increased forvessels under 6 meter (+9%) and for boatsover 10 meters (+33%), while they decreasedin the 6-8 meter (-15%) and 8-10 meters (-36%) range. Imports dominate the market ofsailing boats by a 93% margin and most ofthese are between 34 and 40 feet (10-12
meters). Exports were valued at 178.7 million(-2.9%). According to data collected from Jan-uary to October 2012, Finnish boats were pri-marily imported by Norway, Sweden, Russia,Germany and the Netherlands. In all, 5,673boats were exported to 38 countries.Imports in the same period were valued at 32million euro (-15.8%) for a total of 2,027 boats(excluding mega-yachts), representing a12.5% increase, mainly from the USA, Poland,France and Sweden. Outboard motors salescounted 26,746 units, with 60% of these,engines under 15 horsepower.

Among the novelties of the event was the “Made in UAE” pavil-ion, devoted to the promotion of locally-made products, and inparticular regarding the small-to-medium range boats manufac-tured by boatyards like Al Hareb Marine, Julfar Craft and OceanBoats. Important discussions were held between major interna-tional nautical industrialists during the economic summit, whichdealt in particular with the development of the nautical market inthe Middle East. As chairman Mohammed Hamdan Al Shamsistated, «During any boating industry show there is a need tohave the scientific element in addition to the business side andpeople need to be aware of critical issues including technology,safety, insurance, and marine licensing among others. Eventslike the Gulf Boating Conference facilitate constructive discus-sions, help forge new links and develop the industry in the rightmanner between government and non-government organisa-tions, as the buoyant GCC boating industry continues its posi-tive growth». The next edition is slated for March 4 – 8,2014.

The artificial harbor is accessed by an open-ing in the ring, whose structural continuity is ensured by apart which remains submerged, but deeply enough to allowaccess even to boats with deep drafts. The position of thisentrance can be shifted to keep it consistently downwind andin a sheltered position with respect to the wave motion, sincethe port can be rotated 360 ° around its axis, which coin-cides with the geometric center of anchor. The core of thestructure consists of a central island accessible by a large“pier.” Both the island and the “pier” are designed to haveseveral floors. In a dominant position on the summit of theisland, covered by a glass dome, there is the port’s “controltower.” The floors below all encircle a central open spacewhich, out at sea, becomes a pool or a natural aquarium.Around this body of water, below sea level, four stories ofhotel rooms look out at an underwater view of the sea. Theoutdoor part of the first bridge of the pier houses a dockabout one meter above sea level from which mooring docksextend radially. The indoor area on the same level houses facilities for crewmembers (toilets and some shops) and for boats (mechan-ics), as well as pumps for refueling.The second and third bridge instead host various leisure facili-ties and restaurants for the crews and hotel guests, as well aswork and monitoring areas and crew accommodations, etc. The first level, submersed in the water, serves as a port“hold”, containing several technical areas for machinery,technological systems, and tanks for drinking water, fueland liquid waste.
Imagine a harbor that, although near theshore, is not land-bound. This project, designedby the architect Luigi Cammarota, illustrates a totally free-floating structure that reinvents the notion of a port which,no longer confined to the borderline where the land meetsthe sea, can be out on the open sea and can withstand theforce of the waves and ride the tides.Being totally aquatic means a port can be created evenwhere the geography of the coastline does not permit oneto be built or to support a traditional, pre-existing one.It is a true floating island only linked with land by its needto be anchored to the seabed, which is why it cannot belocated too far from the coast.The entire structure is a huge ring, with curved outer wallsprotecting the water it encloses from the waves. The energy of the floating harbor is provided by renewableenergy sources:• a turbine is driven (synchronously with the rising and falling of the harbor with the tide) by thetraction exerted by the anchoring cables on the anchor itself;• photovoltaic panels covering an area that can reach up to 24,000 square meters is located on thetop of the ring structure and the central island;• two wind turbines are located on top of the skegs;• two underwater propeller blades, located at the entrance to the port on the connecting structu-re between the underwater skegs, connected to turbines that use the kinetic energy of marine cur-rents and convert it into electricity.
