This month we speak with Celsa Nuñez, from Barcelona. She has been a legal attorney for over 16 years. After living and working in the US for 5 years she came back to Barcelona and now also works with international English speaking clients.

Have you noticed an increased demand for legal services in English in Barcelona? Yes, the world is becoming much more globalized. There are many more international relationships, both business and personal, and they are more complex. Some countries speak minority languages, and they all use English to communicate for business.

What do your international clients tend to need most from you?

A common example is international inheritance, if the deceased has been living in Spain for a long time and they have assets- a house, and bank account, and the heirs live in another country, such as in England. To claim their inheritance they have to go to an international lawyer, as there are international aspects. It sometimes it has to be dealt with by a Spanish judge, but one would need to coordinate with an English attorney.

Is it easy enough to set up a business in Spain or do you need good legal advice to do that? You can do it by yourself, but a business consultant will give you the best advice for the kind of business that you’re setting up. Nowadays with the internet it looks like you can do it all by yourself – and you can – but there are so many things that you won’t know, and perhaps you’ll make a bad decision. And of course there are some things that you can’t do. If you go to trial you absolutely need a lawyer.

Do you deal with a lot of court cases?

That happens more for civil cases. With international law it’s mostly private business cases, business

relationships and international contracts. We try to settle the majority of cases before going to trial because that would be very expensive and it takes a long time. Unfortunately the process is very slow in Spain! We try to mediate, or go to arbitration, as this is always faster.

Is there anything you’d like people to know about the work you do?

I’d like people to get used to seeing a lawyer as they see a doctor, as a preventative measure instead of only when the problem is already big. I recommend that when you get involved in any relationship, whether it’s getting married, signing a contract, or going into business - anything that involves signing something, to get a lawyer to check it out first. It’s much cheaper and less hassle in the long run.

Great advice… that makes me think of the number of people stung by flat rental contracts...Oh, many of them are abusive. Some people think because you’re a foreigner you won’t understand it. Some of the paragraphs are even against the law! But if you sign a contract like that, with illegal clauses, and then have problems with your landlord you’re in a more complicated situation. So before you sign any contract, ask a lawyer to look at it!

You can contact Celsa, at Leimar Lawyers & Business Consultants for a free consultation.

Not all Barcelona’s DJs, great though they are, can boast a track record and pedigree like Barcelona-based DJ Angel. Originally from Nottingham, she was a resident at the city’s legendary Venus Club along-side Darren Emerson & Sasha, and was also resident at both the Hacienda and Ministry of Sound during the nineties.

With a new album signed to London’s Seamless Recordings, Somebody’s Heaven, under her eclectic moniker, Venus in Mo-tion, her music is frequently heard drifting out of the world’s coolest lounge bars, readily available on the top selling chill out compilations or regularly playlisted on radio stations like Ibiza Sonica Radio. On her first album, Walking in Limbo, Angel composed one of the only cover versions of Bob Marley, a stun-ning interpretation of No Wom-an No Cry entitled This Woman, which gained support from his family’s estate and trust.

Real name Angela Johnson – she masterfully juggles DJ-ing, writing songs, studio produc-tion and raising a family. After a short break to give birth to her daughter, she is back spin-ning deep house sounds as DJ Angel at the W-Hotel Barcelona this summer and performing live as Venus in Motion in the Whitehouse, London.

inland industry that finds its way into the sea, and over-fishing are other threats. Although stronger controls and legislation are being im-plemented across all these sectors, there are countless small ways we can also contribute to protecting the seas.

The Barcelona based web portal eco-yachts.com has for the last 5 years been providing information and resources for the yachting in-dustry about how people can minimise their environmental impact. “By increasing environ-mental awareness people are more empow-ered to make conscious choices that respect nature, and will preserve the natural balance now and in the future,” says Ecoyachts co-founder Alain Serrini. This summer they have taken the step from providing information to launching a new range of yachtcare products with all natural ingredients.

Another example of moving from awareness to action is the Ajuntament’s campaign to stop smokers littering the beaches with cigarette butts (which take 12 years to decay,) by dis-tributing plastic cone-shaped ashtrays. Also, the Posidonia Festival which takes place in Sitges from the 31st Aug-1st September will be sharing a packed agenda of events that fo-cus on sustainable maritime developments, through workshops, talks, music and art.

Whilst the yachting and tourism industry take on the challenge of keeping its development aligned with essential ecological principles, we must also be aware of the ecological foot-print of our own actions on the beach.

In the last 20 years Barcelona has seen a massive increase in the maritime leisure and tour-ism industry, from holidaymak-ers (and local residents!) who flock to the beaches, to private yachts and international cruise ships. According to the Barce-lona Tourism Board, this year 2.6 million cruise passengers are expected to go through the Port of Barcelona, which is the most important cruise ship port in the Mediterranean, and the world´s 4th largest harbour.

The most recent development which is currently well under-way is the transformation of the Marina Port Vell. It previ-ously could hold 410 small to medium sized yachts, and will now hold just 160superyachts and state-of-the-art facilities. Despite the initial controvery the Ajuntament de Barcelona sealed the deal at the end of 2011, and work is expected to be completed in Spring 2014.

Tourism is clearly one Barcelo-na’s top economic sectors, and maritime tourism accounts for a large part of this. However, this is also another example of an industry that severly threatens the natural balance of the ma-rine ecosystem. Pollution from

to go up and down the cable car to Tibidabo, Francesc, with his ears primed to capture the silence, was impressed by the cavernous depth of these shipyards, without mechanical devices: “It’s too bad that there’s nothing in Mallorca that counts with this architecture that dazzles so much”.

The guide Francesc, with his ducklings peck-ing around him, all eager for knowledge, read some of the notices nailed around the replica of the royal galley of Don Juan of Austria, gov-ernor of the Spanish Netherlands and com-mander of the Holy League United, in the sixteenth century: “Since 1971 this space is occupied by the replica of the royal galley of Juan de Austria, built on the occasion of the commemoration of the fourth centenary of the Battle of Lepanto, as the original ship left the Shipyards of Barcelona in 1571.”

In the battle of Lepanto the Turks fought against the Christian Holy League. The latter won. At the stern of the ship is a Latin legend, a verse taken from the Aeneid of Virgil: “Su-per et Garamantes et Indos” whose meaning refers to something like extending the empire (Roman Apostolic course) beyond the old and extinct Garama Berber kingdom in what is now Libya, and beyond the Indus Valley, which reached Alexander the Great. “The restoration of the shipyards has revealed how the building was part of the medieval walls of the city. From inside, we can see what may be the wall of the first building of the shipyard, built between 1276 and 1285, during the reign of Peter II, The Great. And behind is the wall, built a hundred years later by order of Peter III, The Ceremoni-ous “, reports another notice.

They came on the first Sun-day of June. By boat. Across a choppy sea. The schoolboys from Palma de Mallorca barely got seasick, they were too animated by the excitement that bubbled up inside them. Their destination: Barcelona. For three days they enjoyed Gaudi’s feat of engineering the Sagrada Familia, the geological wall and flooded forest of the CosmoCaixa, the city’s science muesum, and marvelled at the modernist buildings within the Eixample. On Wednesday June 5, these teenage boys visited Barcelona’s Maritime Museum, a refuge for noble and needy souls at Drassanes in the Goth-ic area, just by the Rambla de Santa Monica and its human statues. Last February, the mu-seum’s new facilities were in-augurated to provide an even more impressive space for the permanent exhibition, re-structured and rethought, and scheduled for late 2014. “I think that what I’m seeing is great. I think this type of space should definitely be preserved for fu-ture generations,” commented their music teacher Francesc Crespi, who was in charge of the sixth grade class which had come on this school trip to Bar-celona, by boat.

Just two weeks in Barcelona and already I’ve fallen in love with the city. For me the Borne District is the quintessential place to experience all this town has to offer. Now in summer time you feel there are too many people, but just swing into an alleyway and you have lost the crowds and can amble around in a labyrinth finding nooks and crannies that the normal visitors miss. There is always a hidden secret in Borne. Aesthetically the area is a marvel, starting with the soaring towers of the Cathedral del Mar, which at the moment are brought to life by these small black birds the shape of arrows heads swirling around them. The postcard photo captures a zone of Borne near the cathedral. These archways, portals, wooden trimmings, and cobble stones bring together all the elements of foreign marvel for me. Jamie Melbourne

always worked as a chef, but her true pas-sion is the pleasure that baking can bring - to herself and the lucky people who get to taste her creations. With a varied range of flavours (but not too many to boggle the senses) you can choose from Crema Catalana; Orange and Ginger; the infamous Red Velvet; thick and luxurious Caramel; and Carrot Cake - to name only a few. The kitchen might be small and hidden be-hind-the-scenes, but it is all they need, and Yolande and Matteo have it running to rou-tine like clockwork. Yolande tells us that she generally bakes between fifty to one hundred cupcakes per day.

Mostly though, it is the warm and vibrant per-sonalities of Yolande and Matteo that will en-tice you back. Yolande welcomes me into their kitchen at the back of the shop and opens the oven, revealing tray after tray of golden, plump vanilla cupcakes. The smile doesn’t leave her face and it’s clear that she has found her place in baking.

She tells us, “We bake using only natural ingredients, no excess of sugar, fats or salt. Everything is organic. And of course, we bake with love,” she adds with a laugh.
