I’m thrilled to welcome you to the 2019 International Convention and Competition in the enchant-ing city of New Orleans! Known for its fascinating multi-cultural history, vibrant spirit, and amazing music, “The Big Easy” is the perfect setting for our week of joyful song and celebration. As we enjoy all that New Orleans has to offer, the spirit of the city will undoubtedly unite with the spirit of Sweet Adelines. I cannot wait to experience all that we will bring to the Crescent City and, likewise, to see how our hearts and minds will be enriched by this remarkable locale!

Our annual tradition of presenting the most awe-inspiring performances at the international competition is destined to fill our hearts, yet again, with wonder and amazement. The same can be said of the brilliant education classes offered throughout the week. I’m confident you will find no shortage of opportunities to fill each day with something new and exciting to do! Let the good times roll!

Please be sure to join me on Tuesday evening, before the 2019 Harmony Classic competitions, for my State of the Organization address. This year’s address will focus on our new Sweet Adelines International Vision, Guiding Principles, Strategic Plan and what they mean to YOU and your life as a Sweet Adeline. Be among the first to know where Sweet Adelines International is going and how we, together, are going to get there over the next five years. It’s sure to be an inspiring way to kick off our week of harmonizing the world! Have a wonderful convention and, if you are competing, break a beignet!

Yours, in harmony,

Patty

Welcome to New Orleans

What is life on a high note?

It’s the first time your voice blends into a magical ringing chord.

It’s arranging a piece of music—and then hearing your arrangement sung for the first time onstage.

It’s conversation after rehearsal and laughter on the way home from performance.

It’s seeing your granddaughter welcomed into the chorus that has brought you so much joy.

It’s all this and more.

It’s what you give when you donate to Sweet Adelines International.

Our Life on a High Note Campaign runs September 1 – December 31, 2019. Our goal is to raise $150,000 to support programs through the Young Singers Foundation, Young Women in Harmony, and The Overtone Society. When you give to Life on a High Note, you’re helping to

support our mission of Elevating women singers worldwide through education, performance, and competition in barbershop harmony and a cappella music.

To donate or find out more, visit www.sweetadelines.com/give, text “Support” to 1.918.992.4838 (U.S. phone numbers only),

or contact [email protected].

The Joni Bescos Trophy Awarded by the Coronet Club

Presented by Coronet Club President Janell Lind

Each year, the Coronet Club presents a traveling trophy to the new champion quartet. The current trophy is named in memory of Joni Bescos, recipient of Sweet Adelines International’s second President’s Lifetime Achievement Award (1999). A Master Arranger, Joni has hundreds of arrangements to her credit and was instrumental in developing educational tools for arrangers. In February of 2009, Sweet Adelines International lost an icon. Joni was an international champion, a member of the International Judging Program, certified in three categories and served as a chorus director.

ASCAP Quartet TrophyThe American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) is a voluntary, nonprofit association that acts as a clearinghouse for performing rights licensing. Since 1962, ASCAP has honored our organization by presenting individual trophies to the members of the International Champion Quartet.

International Chorus TrophyPresented by Lori Lyford, Scottsdale Chorus, #21

The first International Champion Chorus trophy was retired in 1995. It was designed by the Balfour Company and represents Sweet Adelines International’s continuing efforts to harmonize the world. The traveling trophy, 1973-1995, was first presented to the Racine (Wisconsin) Chorus, directed by Jarmela Speta. It is now at International Headquarters. Currently a new trophy is presented each year and is retained by the winning chorus.

ASCAP Chorus TrophyThe American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) is a voluntary, nonprofit association that acts as a clearinghouse for performing rights licensing. Past Conventions and Champions (Cont.)

Note: In 1993, the Sweet Adelines International and Coronet Club boards of directors agreed that the International Quartet and Chorus Champions are more aptly designated by the calendar year in which they primarily hold their titles rather than the year in which they win their titles. Thus, there are no “1993 International Champions.” At this year’s 2019 International Competitions, the Quartet and Chorus Champions become the 2020 International Champions.
