Legislative Update Lucinda Pyles of Kahala testified successfully to allow the DLNR to require wa- terfront owners to trim their "enhanced" vegetation that grows below the high water mark into the public beach area. Favorable testimony from Carol Wilcox, Sierra Club, Neighborhood Boards 2 and 3 assisted in HB 1808 passing the House. The Senate held its first hearing March 12th & is passing the bill with amendments on to the Judiciary Committee. Bills on the Move - State law now prohibits aerial fireworks, but a new bill would allow counties to enact stricter ordinances or a ban. A bill proposes that the Governor appoint the Board of Education and the Superintendent. Too many tax and fee increase proposals abound as well as bills to reduce tax credits and close exemptions. Many bills propose to dip into a myriad of special funds including the Tobacco, Hur- ricane and Rainy Day funds. An expedited bill to somewhat reduce unemployment insurance taxes for 2 years has passed. Marumoto Bills An authorization for special purpose revenue bond for improvements at Kaimuki Christian School is now in the Senate. KCC intern Aaron Cornelison is working on obtaining support to repair the chapel on campus. The project, first listed in Marumoto's 19 th District CIP bill, has been incor- porated in HB 2200, the state budget bill which has passed the House. Rep. Marumoto has introduced legislation asking the city to increase fines to prevent property blight in Kahala and a resolution asking the Department of Health to gather statistics from doctors and hospitals on All-Terrain vehicle (ATV) inju- ries. She is hoping for a hearing on a resolution asking the Governor, Board of Education and HSTA to get back to the negotiation table to end or reduce Furlough Fridays. During a session of the House Reps Nishimoto,

Marumoto & others recognized the Kaimuki High

Girls Basketball Team for winning the Division II

state championship. The representative was also

privileged to award certificates to First Hawaiian

Bank's Tony Guerrero, KTA Super Store's Barry

Taniguchi, and Laser Eye Center’s Dr. Tyrie Jen-

kins upon their induction into the Junior Achieve-

ment Hall of Fame.

Rep. Marumoto was happy to help the Kahala

Kahala Nui Donates $15,000 – Hawaii Meals on Wheels was the fortunate recipient of the generosity of

Kahala Nui residents and CEO Pat Duarte, * Congrats to Lester H. Fukuda, formerly of Waialae Nui Val-

ley and Neighborhood Board No. 3 on his appointment to the Commission on Transportation.
