Welcome! Today, Jacob assumes the responsibilities of a Jewish adult by becoming a Bar Mitzvah. We are so pleased that you could join us for the event! Because this Bar Mitzvah is a mostly virtual event, there are some things that will be different from a typical Bar or Bat Mitzvah. The biggest difference is that you will be viewing this service online. Although we are disappointed that family and loved ones could not be here in person, the silver lining is that many more people can attend because Temple Emanuel set up technology to allow for virtual viewing. Another difference is that instead of printing a program, we have made this booklet so that you can follow along without having a prayer book. Many thanks to Erika Meitner for putting this booklet together. Jacob will lead the service today in Hebrew and English. He will also read from the Torah. The Torah scroll has only Hebrew letters, with no vowels, transliteration or cantillation marks to help with pronunciation. The Torah from which Jacob will read was rescued during the Holocaust from a synagogue in Moravia, which is now in Czech Republic. We are so fortunate that Jacob had the opportunity to work with Rabbi Cohen for the past year. Her wisdom, patience and enthusiasm have been instrumental in Jacob's journey. We are also thankful to be part of the Blacksburg Jewish Community Center, which has been a source of support and community for us. As we celebrate today, we also remember those who are no longer with us. We feel their presence. Last, we want to express how proud we are of Jacob. He has worked hard over the past year to prepare for this day. Although he wishes that you all could be here in person, he can feel your support from afar!
