Bar Harbor Chamber of Commerce

Welcome

Bar Harbor is the heart and soul of Maine’s coastal heritage. Nestled between

the mountains of Acadia National Park and the crystal blue Atlantic Ocean, the

town of Bar Harbor is a vibrant and historic community of artists, writers, lobster

fishermen, and outdoor enthusiasts.

Located on Mount Desert Island, the third largest island on the eastern seaboard,

Bar Harbor has enchanted visitors throughout the ages with its incredible natural

beauty, cultural traditions, and endless opportunities for recreation. On the

shores of Frenchman Bay, Bar Harbor offers the charm of a small Maine fishing

village with a wide range of services, accommodations, restaurants, activities,

shopping, and cultural heritage. Surrounded on three sides by the mountains of

Acadia National Park, Bar Harbor is a great place to live and work and offers an

exceptional quality of life. Outdoor activities like walking, hiking, biking, kayaking,

and watching wildlife are popular pastimes of Bar Harbor residents, especially

because Acadia National Park is just minutes away.

Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park have something for everyone. Great

schools, amenities and services, arts and culture, and quality of life—all set against

the backdrop of the most picturesque scenery you will find anywhere—make Bar

Harbor an exceptional place to live, work, and play. We look forward to seeing you

soon and to welcoming you to our community.

When you cross the Trenton Bridge onto Mount Desert Island, you may not realize you’ve left the mainland.

But you have, and you’ve entered the town of Bar Harbor (even though you’re still about 10 miles from downtown). Twenty-eight miles across from west to east with a coastline roughly as long, Bar Harbor villages cover 45 stunning square miles.

Bar Harbor has it all: rich history, vibrant village communities, unsurpassed beauty, and plenty to do—for everyone.

History Settled in 1763, Bar Harbor has been home to lobstermen, shipbuilders, artists, outdoor enthusiasts, and wealthy “summer people.” It survived the Great Fire of 1947 and continues to draw millions of tourists every year.

villages Six villages—each with its own distinct personality and flair—make up the town of Bar Harbor: Town Hill, Eden, Salisbury Cove, Hulls Cove, Otter Creek, and downtown Bar Harbor.

Beauty On approaching Bar Harbor, one visitor from Florida asked, “When’s it going to flatten out?” Well, it doesn’t. The rugged, mountainous terrain hugs the coastline and offers gorgeous, elevated views of the sparkling Atlantic.

activities From kayaking and rock climbing to museum visits and lighthouse tours, there’s something for everyone in Bar Harbor. Great places to stay, eat, and shop bring visitors back time and time again.

Sitting on the northeast coast of Mount Desert Island, Bar Harbor simply invites you in. Accept the invitation—you’ll be glad you did.

siMPly fascinating It’s true… Bar Harbor is a fascinating place. A good part of that fascination comes from its rich and storied history, especially dating from the mid-1800s to World War II when the eyes of the world watched with interest.

The credit for the sudden migration to this little Maine seaside village (then called Eden) generally goes to two young artists, Thomas Cole and Frederic Church, of the Hudson River Valley School of Painting. Their works impelled art lovers from Boston, New York, Philadelphia, and beyond to travel and see for themselves the stunning landscapes that had inspired the two.

Then, when the wealthy summer people —the Astors, Rockefellers, Vanderbilts, Carnegies, and Morgans—began building cottages (make that 50-room mansions with servants’ quarters, stables, and guest houses) in 1868, Bar Harbor changed. No longer just a simple fishing village home to lobstermen, shipbuilders, and lumbermen, it mushroomed into a playground for the very rich and a world-renowned tourist destination.

A top ten rating is always good. And that’s right where Acadia National Park falls on the list of most visited parks in the United States, welcoming more than two million visitors a year.

Established by Woodrow Wilson in 1916 with 6,000 acres, Acadia now covers more than 40,000 acres thanks to the remarkable dedication and philanthropy of wealthy private citizens such as Charles W. Eliot, George B. Dorr, and John D. Rockefeller, Jr. The park encompasses nearly half of Mount Desert Island, a scattering of smaller islands, and Schoodic Peninsula.

The only national park in the Northeast, Acadia is big on attractions. Early risers can drive, bike, or hike up Cadillac Mountain, the highest point on the East Coast, to watch the sunrise. They’ll be the first in the United States to see the dawning of a new day.

Motorists who drive the Park Loop Road enjoy a 27-mile ride along oceanside cliffs and through mountain forests, stopping at scenic turnouts and notable attractions along the way, like the mighty Thunder Hole and Sand Beach. The trip is a must.

One of the most amazing features of Acadia National Park is the interlaced system of hiking trails and carriage roads. With varied lengths and difficulty levels, the 130 miles of trails appeal to everyone from casual walkers to seasoned triathletes. Hike, bike, snowshoe, cross-country ski —or go on horseback.

You’ll love Acadia, and you’ll want to make it your home.

on tHe carriage roadsYou’ll take a step back in time when you walk, hike, bike, snowshoe, or cross-country ski the carriage roads of Mount Desert Island. Or go by horse and carriage, the way John D. Rockefeller, Jr. intended when he built the 45 miles of crushed stone roads between 1913 and 1940. No matter how you experience the carriage roads, you’ll enjoy the magnificent beauty that surrounds them.

Local workers quarried granite right here on the island to build the intricate network of roads and 17 spectacular stone bridges. In fact, the stone cutters developed such skill that Rockefeller asked them to create a more rustic look. He also took care to preserve trees and to landscape with native plants —ferns, sheep laurel, and blueberry bushes —so the roads blend naturally with their surroundings.

The well-marked roads wander through Acadia National Park, covering long, shady stretches of woodland, skirting peaceful lakes and ponds, circling mountain elevations, and showcasing breathtaking views of the Atlantic and nearby islands.

More than 60 years ago Rockefeller donated 11,000 acres to Acadia National Park, complete with the road system he planned, funded, and constructed. Today both Mainers and visitors enjoy the quiet beauty of Acadia’s beautiful carriage roads.

Marketing One of the missions of the Bar Harbor Chamber of Commerce is to assist you in marketing your business to potential customers. Working together, the Chamber is able to offer its members a wide array of marketing opportunities that would most likely be too costly for a business to do on its own. Marketing is an important component of any successful business or destination. We want to provide as many affordable opportunities as possible to our members that will best meet their needs. The Chamber staff continues to work hard to get to know each member individually and to build relationships. We feel strongly that the better we know our members the better we can market your business and provide first hand information.

referrals The Chamber is the main source of information for visitors and locals looking for anything from where to stay to finding a dentist. The Chamber refers member organizations. This means the nearly 100,000 visitors who pass through the Acadia Welcome Center and the downtown Bar Harbor Visitors Center will be referred to members. Take into consideration the tens of thousands of phone calls the Chamber receives, the Visitor’s Guidebook distribution, and the two informational centers, there are countless referrals being made to our members.

group Buy Programs The Chamber’s Energy Program with No Frills Oil offers significant discounts on energy products. By pooling our oil and propane products we are able to get discount pricing. This service is only available to Chamber members in good standing.

networking The Chamber sponsors all of the Business After Hours events, which create opportunities for members to meet and share ideas. Networking often results in referrals, new ideas, and even partnerships. Being a member of the Chamber means that you will be invited to all these events, as well as have the opportunity to host a Business After Hours.

advocacy The Bar Harbor Chamber of Commerce acts as the voice of the business in our community. We consistently represent the interests of businesses to overcome challenges and work with our members to continue making Bar Harbor a great place to live and visit.

customer service training Customer service can make or break a business. With so many new employees coming to work in Bar Harbor each year, training for customers can be difficult. The Chamber offers complimentary customer service training for their members to which businesses can send their staff.

eggs & issues Another way the Chamber keeps its members up to date on business issues is through our Eggs & Issues events. Throughout the year guest speakers come to Bar Harbor to discuss various issues that affect the Bar Harbor business community.

working together Being a Chamber Member means you directly support the area’s mission of promoting economic growth and stability in the community. The Chamber is the only local organization that has the means and the infrastructure to promote and market Bar Harbor as a world-class travel destination. Membership dues give the Chamber the ability to collectively promote and market Bar Harbor and its businesses, something which would be difficult for a lone business to do as effectively on its own.

added credibility Being a Chamber Member brings added credibility to your business. Many customers and visitors look to the Bar Harbor Chamber of Commerce as a source for finding reliable businesses they can trust. By identifying yourself with the area’s leading business organization, you will reach more customers, resulting in greater success. The Bar Harbor Chamber of Commerce decal displayed on your business window shows that you support prosperity, progress, and the high quality of life in Bar Harbor.

special events The Bar Harbor Chamber of Commerce promotes our members’ events on its websites at no cost. Events bring visitors to the area and the Chamber is proud to promote them. The Chamber also sponsors and organizes several different events such as Acadia Night Sky Festival which help to draw visitors to Bar Harbor.

Members only website section As a member of the Bar Harbor Chamber of Commerce you will have access to the Member’s Only section on www.barharborinfo.com. The Chamber greatly encourages its members to use this benefit. In this section members can get up to date information, post job listings, update paid listings, and add an event onto the events calendar.

chamber Happenings Each week the Chamber distributes an e-newsletter to its members. This newsletter is designed to keep members up to date with current events and what the Chamber is doing to support and promote its members. Each year the Chamber distributes 225,000 guides through direct visitor requests, through paid distribution in the Boston, New York, Philadelphia, and coastal Connecticut metro areas along with bulk distribution to AAA travel agencies, and countless visitors in the Acadia Welcome Center in Trenton and downtown at the Bar Harbor Visitors Center. Our new electronic version, the e-guide, increases the value of your advertising in the Visitors Guide.
