New Targa trumps closest rivals

PORSCHE takes inspiration fromits past and adds a high tech twistto its latest open air 911 Targavariant.Recent years have seen the Tar-

ga evolve into a 911 with a largesliding glass roof and hatch-liketailgate, but this latest ‘991’ modelis a thoroughly modern take onPorsche’s first attempt at an al-ternative wind in the hair experi-ence.Although a decadent choice in

a sea of more driver-focused 911models, the Targa offers the bestof both worlds for buyers seekingan open roof experience with adifference.This Targa boasts a fully pow-

ered roof mechanism, and whileit noticeably adds to the car’sweight the balletic action is im-pressive.The car’s wrap aroundrear screen is another technicalhighlight.The 911’s nose boasts sufficient

room for soft bags or modestamounts of shopping. Cabin odd-ment space is reasonable. In real-ity the car is a strict two-seater,and this format suits the decadent

nature of the 911 Targa well. Withthe roof down, wind and othernoise is modest at all but highspeeds.It’s clear that Porsche wants to

position the Targa as a flagshipmodel. As such, the Targa’s de-fault specification is all-wheeldrive.Engine choice is between the

familiar 3.4-litre, 350 horsepowerand 3.8-litre, 400 horsepower flatsix motors. Buyers also have thechoice of seven-speed manualor seven-speed dual clutch PDKgearboxes.Porsche expects most buyers to

go down the ‘S’ specification 3.8-li-tre route, while the PDK is rapid-ly becoming the gearbox of choicefor more buyers. In this configu-ration the Targa is a machine ca-pable of rapid acceleration andsustained high speeds.Factor in adjustable sports sus-

pension and trick elec-tronic stability controls,and you’ve got a car thatdelivers plenty of thrillswhile also delivering an al-together more classy wind

in the hair experience.Don’t expect GT3 levels of pre-

cision, though. The Targa’s extraweight is obvious in the cornersthanks to the fancy roof ’s hard-ware.In basic coupe trim the car is

good value, but the options listis long and tempting. In Targaguise the asking price is at theupper end of the mass productionroadster scale. However, that roofand the car’s road presence easilytrumps its closest rivals.If you’re on the fence regarding

a 911 Cabriolet purchase, you’d becrazy not to consider the Targa.If performance isn’t a concern,

the retro inspired Targa is eas-ily the better looker. In realitythe ownership compromises aresmall but the trade off is a visu-ally more distinctive car with allof the regular trademark 911 at-tributes.
