THE BAR 5 STORY Bar 5 Simmental was incorporated in January of 1969 in Douglas, MB and became a life member of the Canadian Simmental Association on August 26, 1969. Bar5 began to investigate the importation of Simmental cattle from Europe with the fi rst trip being made in June of 1969 resulting in the purchase of 3 cows and 1 bull that arrived at the ranch in January 1970. Th is was one of about 12 buying trips Bar 5 would make in bringing in 143 cows and six bulls directly from Europe. Th e fi rst calf to be registered with the Canadian Simmental Association was CO 20C, a bull calf out of our fi rst import cow Baron. Th is calf was born on June 7, 1971 and sold in February 1972 for $18,500 to Ben Burnside.

In order to off er more genetics to the cattle industry Bar 5 started a semen division called Circle 3 Simmental Genetic Pool in the spring of 1994. It is now called Circle 3 Certifi ed Genetics.

Many interesting people, too many to mention here, have worked for Bar 5 or have been involved in its ownership. Th e name Bar 5 is derived from the fi ve groups that started the operation, Don Mitchell, Ross Mitchell, Ross Th omas, the Draper brothers, and the Gordon brothers, were the original group in 1969.

In 1973, the Gordon brothers sold their shares to Wilf Davis, who had become the General Manager on July 1, 1970. In December 1977, Wild Davis left the ranch, sold his shares back to the ownership group. In December 1980, Elson McDougald purchased the entire ranch from the shareholders, and he brought in Wilf Davis as General Manager.

In June 1985, Emil Stange purchased the ranch from Elson. In July 1990, Ron Nolan and Irving Langill purchased Bar 5. Bar 5 purchased the Harkaway Simmental operation and cowherd from the Nolan family and the Farnham Simmental herd from the Langill’s and set up Bar 5 Markdale, Ontario.

In 1995, Ron and Carla Nolan purchased Bar 5. Th ey continued to operate the two farms in Markdale and Brandon until 2001, when they held the complete dispersal of Manitoba’s Bar 5 herd. In 1999 Ron initiated the Bar 5 SA operation in South Africa and stared breeding Fleckvieh Simmental by purchasing 5 cows. Bar 5 began importing embryos from South Africa and transplanting in Markdale.

In April, each year, Bar 5 hosts the Spring Spectacular, Bull and Female Production Sale. In October, the Extravaganza Fall Production Sale.

In this example, the EPD from the animal are shown on the top line, the next line shows accuracy or how much information was used in calculating the EPD, the third line shows the percentile rank or where the animal fits. 50 is right at breed average. Blue lines on the graph to the left of the 50% show cattle that are below breed average for the trait and the green lines to the right show cattle that are above breed average for the trait. In this example the sire is in the top 15% for CE. In other words, 85% of the Simmental in Canada are harder calving and 15% are easier calving. He is in the 55th percentile for carcass weight so 55% of the Simmental produce more carcass weight and 45% produce lighter carcasses. The trait is shown to the left of the graph and the percentile rank is shown to the right.IT IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT TO NOTE: the graph and percentiles do not show whether an animal is good or bad, only where they fit in the population. For example, this sire had good CE and powerful growth, but very poor maternal characteristics. This is not good or bad, but simply mean that he may be a better fit to produce feeder cattle than replacement heifers. Depending on what the customer needs/wants will determine what type of cattle they need. For example a producer may want a sire in the top 10% CE for use on heifers and growth below average, but may want well above average growth for use on cows and accept lower CE.

EPD’s are expected progeny differences or deviances. They only predict future performance differences based on reported past differences. One record by its self is of no use, as it has no contemporary group to compare to and no difference to measure. Also 50 animals in the same group with all the same measurement are of no use and are edited out because there was no measured difference or deviation. It is easy to see that growth traits like BW, WW, and YW are always going to have differences, thus breeders only have to worry about your CG (contemporary group). And that the sires you have in that CG tie your herd data to the broad data base, and thus your data ties into the broad data set. Including a couple of AI sired progeny in the CG goes a long way in increasing the accuracy of your own sire’s data.
