NEW MEMBERS:

Shara Benavidez was born in Cochabamba, Bolivia and raised in a devout Baptist Christian family which included three brothers and one sister. Shara‟s father, an Engineer by training, is the President of the Bolivian Baptist Convention. Her mother, besides being actively involved in her church, has a passionate interest in assisting women to be skilled in various crafts, thus making them more economically self–sufficient. Because of her father‟s work, it was necessary for the family to move frequently. They always became involved in the nearest Baptist Church. From the age of 10, Shara taught in the Sunday School and subsequently became involved with the youth work, later named as a lay pastor. Shara was baptized on December 24th, 1998, at the time of the 100th Anniversary of the Bolivian Baptist work. While living in Bolivia she was always involved in the life of the church, teaching or being part of the worship team, as well as serving as a deacon. She also worked as a volunteer for CBM and American Missions in her country helping as a translator for medical teams, construction workers, and churches. Shara came to Canada in November 2008, first attending the Hispanic Congregation at Dufferin Street Baptist Church. She now attends Yorkminster Park Baptist Church while studying theology at Wycliffe College. Fluent in Spanish as well as English she loves to teach, sing, and play the tambourine, while enjoying the sport of volley ball.

Pamela Brand was born in India into a third generation evangelical Anglican family. Sensing the increasing underlying resentment to Christianity in their country, the family moved to Canada in 1967. Pamela is married to Tomas and they have a son Jonathan who is teaching Pure Mathematics at MIT in Boston. Pamela was introduced to Yorkminster Park by a friend and her strong Christian background responded to the music, the biblically based sermons and the beauty of the worship that she found here. She attended the Discipleship 101 and 200 classes held at the church. Pamela is looking forward to being received as a member and participating more fully in the life of this church.

Sakasha Hewitt is a student at Central Technical School where she is in Grade 12. She plans to return there next year to take the Electrical Package leading to a co-op placement, apprenticeship and then employment. She lives in the St. Clair and Oakwood area where she attended church as a child with her grandmother. Following her grandmother‟s death, she started coming to Yorkminster Park along with her twin sister Simone and her mother, Felicia. Sakasha enjoys the youth activities at YP. She has attended and enjoyed the “Blizzard” weekends with the Youth Group for two years and likes the variety in the programs, especially “Laser Quest”. She appreciates the warm fellowship and the helpful devotionals. Sakasha looks forward to joining YP Church following her recent baptism on Palm Sunday.

Dexter Jonas was born in Trinidad, baptized at a young age, and came to Canada with his family at the age of 7. Educated here, Dexter graduated from Ryerson University with a degree in Business Administration. Raised in the Presbyterian Church, Dexter started to attend Yorkminster Park on a casual basis in 2002; enjoying the “big” services of Christmas and Easter. He has been attending this church regularly since July 2008, and now wishes to become a member of the congregation. He is currently a co-ordinator for the narthex Coffee Talk program and volunteers for our Out of the Cold. Although Dexter travels frequently for work, he also enjoys travelling for leisure. His favourite countries are Turkey and Barbados. He loves sports, including tennis and cycling, and is a member of a long distance bicycling club.

Emily Knope has attended Yorkminster Park Baptist Church since she was very young. Throughout all this time, she has participated in many different aspects of the church. She is presently an enthusiastic member of the Minster Singers, as well as the youth group, which she has been a part of for many years. Emily is currently teaching the junior and senior kindergarten class in the Sunday School. Besides her school involvement at Unionville High School, Emily has been horseback riding for four years. This has developed into a very strong interest, and she hopes to continue enjoying this sport for many years. Emily is keen that everyone knows that she wants God in her life forever. Her recent baptism on Palm Sunday supports this strong spiritual commitment and she looks forward to becoming a member of Yorkminster Park Baptist Church.

Mark Heinmiller was born near Georgetown and raised in the nearby village of Norval. He graduated with a BA in English and History from the University of Waterloo (2000). In August 2003 he received a Masters‟ degree in Library and Information Science from the University of Western Ontario. Since 2004 he has worked in the Conflict Records Management Department of the law firm of Olser, Hoskin and Harcourt in Toronto. Mark moved to Toronto in 2009 and eventually settled on Yorkminster Park as a church home; he enjoys the diverse age groups and the level of participation in the congregation as well as the welcome shown him. He has been attending regularly since the spring, participating in the summer Bible study, discipleship classes, and Sam Lee‟s young adult programs. Mark was baptized as an infant in the Immanuel Lutheran Church, and confirmed at St. Andrews United Church in Georgetown in 1992. He was very involved in the life of St. Andrews, assisting at services, serving on the worship committee, and helping with numerous other tasks. Mark enjoys public libraries, museums and art galleries, swimming, cycling, skating and movies.

Funmi Ogun spent her early years in Lagos, Nigeria where she grew up in a close Christian family. At the age of 12 she was baptized in their Baptist Church. Besides regular worship, she found study groups, rallies, and camps to be helpful in her spiritual development. Along with her husband, Funmi immigrated to Canada in 1977 to study. She did post graduate studies at U of T in psychiatry, meanwhile raising a growing family of three girls. She now divides her time between a private practice, and working with those who do not have normal access to assistance (such as those in shelters or living on the streets) under the umbrella of St. Michael‟s Inner City Health Associates. She is also a lecturer at the Dept. of Psychiatry at U. of T. Funmi came to YP intermittently in the 90‟s and recently was able to come to church on a more regular basis as well as participate in the new membership classes. She feels welcomed by a caring congregation, and enveloped with the strong faith and healthy leadership of our ministers as well as the beauty and dignity of our rich musical heritage. A “missing block” has now been put into place, and she is eager to now involve herself more fully in the life of Yorkminster Park. Included in Funmi‟s many interests are gardening, cooking, knitting and reading.

Emma Speller is a grade 10 student at Leaside High School. She is involved in a variety of activities in the community including the local soccer league. Emma has grown up at Yorkminster Park Baptist Church. Her father's family came to Yorkminster Park from Park Road Baptist Church. She likes this church because of the people, the community and the feeling that everyone looks out for one another. Her favourite activity is the Sunday School where she enjoys watching the children develop and learn. She loves seeing the little children grow up. Emma and her friend Emily Knope are currently teaching the kindergarten class at Sunday School. She considers her baptism on Palm Sunday to be a significant step in her Christian walk.

The usual number for a team is 6-10 people ages 16 and up. Your overwhelming generosity through the Children's Project and Christmas alternative gift giving in helping to fund these camps for needy children has been so gratefully received and deeply appreciated. Now we have the opportunity to plan for a hands-on ministry with our overseas partner, the Lebanese Society for Educational and Social Development (LSESD) in one of the children's camps, just one of the several LSESD ministries.
