Focus on Church Starting

Art GroomesChurch Starting

This year at our C2M conference, the keynote speaker told a story about Matt Emmons. Matt’s story is an exmaple of what can happen when our focus is limited. During the 50-meter three-position rifle final at the 2004 Summer Olympics, Matt Emmons only needed to get near the bullseye to win a gold medal. Emmons fired at the target in Lane 3 while shooting in Lane 2. He made a rare mistake in elite competition and instead of coming in first, received a score of zero. Matt limited his focus. He was focused on staying calm instead of where he was shooting. Let’s not limit our focus at a time when so many people are waiting to hear the good news proclaimed. I’m grateful for the churches in the Mid-South Baptist Association that are focused on church planting while serving the needs of their local congregations. We have planters doing the hard work of planting in the city as well as across the country, and we have a number of churches that support them prayerfully, financially and in other ways. As you continue to serve the people in the community God has placed you in, please don’t limit your focus to just the congregation, instead, pray and take steps to equip your congregation to focus on church planting. Join the ranks of those in the Mid-South who are looking beyond their crowd to the communities around them and beyond. After all, we were “sent for this purpose.” (Luke 4:43) If the MSBA can assist you, please contact us.

Ministry OpportunitiesMyra Martin, wife of DOM Mitch Martin, is seeking volunteer leaders to serve on a leadership team. This team will be responsible for encouraging and planning events for pastor’s wives. If you are interested in serving on this team, please contact Myra at [email protected]. This will be a fresh start for Pastor’s Wives Fellowships with new voices and new ideas.

Would you like to teach an adult to read? In the Mid-South, over 120,000 adults cannot read above the fifth-grade level. Some adults are non-readers or functional illiterates. The Adult Reading and Writing Workshop uses the Laubach Way to Reading method and NAMB-designed Bible-based reading with each lesson. If you are interested in taking a basic workshop, contact Minne Garrett at [email protected].

An English as a Second Language (ESL) Workshop for teachers of Internationals will be held Friday night, August 5, from 5:00-9:00 p.m. and Saturday, August 6, from 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m., at Germantown Baptist Church. The training manual, materials, light lunch on Saturday and snacks and drinks are all included in the $30 charge. For more information or to register, contact Minne Garrett at 901-283-6609 or [email protected].

The Gathering is free of political agendas, merchandise and ministry tents. No offering will be received. No books will be sold. No personalities will be promoted, only the name of Jesus Christ. Pastor Barron Martin and One Faith Christian Center

by Stuart McCollough

At the beginning of the 2015-2016 school year, members of One Faith Christian Center

wanted to get involved with a community school. Under the leadership of Pastor BarronMartin, the church decided to adopt Westside Middle School. They provided three to five

mentors daily and soon discovered that there were more behavioral issues at the school than intellectual ones. Pastor Martin was serving at the school one day and was asked to step into an Algebra class where a student was acting out and refusing to participate. In an effort to calm the student, Pastor Martin asked him what he wanted to do. He responded that he wanted to play basketball. When Bro. Barron asked if there were others that would like to play basketball, several hands went up. So Bro. Barron made a list of all the boys who wanted to play basketball. He contacted some other local pastors in the Frayser community, and the Frayser Athletic League was born. The four pastors divided the community up into four zones and started putting out flyers looking for young men ages 12-15 who wanted to play basketball. Bro. Barron oversees the West area: near Westside Middle School; Pastor Charlie Caswell of Union Grove Baptist Church oversees the East: Watkins-Schoolfield area; Apostle Ricky Floyd of Pursuit of God Church oversees the North: Northaven to Frayser Blvd. and Pastor DeAndre Brown of Lifeline to Success and Lifeline to a Dying World Ministries oversees the South area: near the Stage-Delano area. A buzz started on Facebook, and soon the community got behind the effort. All the local news stations and several of the local newspapers have picked up on the story and generated interest and involvement from other people eager to make a difference. Each team has 15 young men on it and meets on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. Besides practicing basketball, the young men are also learning vocational skills such as HVAC training, basic electrical skills and barbering skills. Westside Middle School is a feeder school for MLK Prep (formerly Frayser High) where students are able to take barbering courses and then attend the Jett Barber College, which is owned by another Frayser church, Impact Baptist. There are also opportunities for summer jobs. Along with these life skills, the pastors and mentors are hoping to teach the young men self respect and respect for others. Bro. Barron doesn’t believe Frayser has a violence problem, he believes it is a poverty issue. Many of these young men see no way out and turn to violence that they see all around them. Bro. Barron and others hope that this ministry will show them that there are other alternatives and in the process, help build a better community and turn out future leaders. Future plans include an African-American Young Wall Street where students will be able to invest $2 a month in a safe, low-risk stock to learn about financial planning. They also hope to expand the program to include young ladies in the near future. The first games of the season were played on Saturday, June 25. The teams play each Saturday, beginning at 10:00 a.m., at the MLK Prep gym. The public is invited and encouraged to attend. If you would like more information about the Frayser Athletic League, contact Pastor Barron Martin at 901-870-2799.
