As a community of believers who know,
love, and serve Jesus Christ, we celebrate the
sacramental life of the Church, proclaim the
saving message of Christ, and share the love of the
Lord, especially with the least, the poor,
and the suffering.

FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT DECEMBER 20, 2020
IN OUR PARISH
JESUS’ MISSION IS OUR MISSION: BRING GLAD TIDINGSBy Maggie Smith, Youth and Young Adult Ministry CoordinatorIn the Gospel of Luke, Jesus says this scripture is fulfilled by His life: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord.”I like to think of this as Jesus’ mission statement. He tells us exactly what He came to do! Did you know that Jesus wants us to live our lives exactly how He lived His life? We are supposed to be Jesus to the world. That means Jesus’ mission statement is our mission statement, too!Try saying this out loud today as a declaration over your own life: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon ME, because He has anointed ME to bring glad tidings to the poor. He has sent ME to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord.” The poor, needy, bound, and blind are all around us. Who are you called to bring glad tidings to today? We can do it because Jesus did it first. Let’s make 2021 a year acceptable to the Lord!
PRO-LIFE CORNER
On January 23, 1973, the Supreme Court ruled, in Roe vs Wade, that women had a constitutional right to abortion, and this right was based on an implied right to “personal privacy” in the Fourteenth Amendment. The Court said that a fetus is not a person but a "potential life," and thus does not have constitutional rights of its own. In a companion case, that was decided on the same day, Doe vs Bolton, the court ruled that abortion for “the health of the mother” could not be restricted. This included “all factors—physical, emotional, psychological, familial, and the woman’s age—relevant to the wellbeing of the patient.” These two rulings effectively made abortion legal through all nine months of pregnancy for almost any reason and was applied to all 50 states.Major legislative laws and court rulings set a moral standard for our society. While abortion was already becoming a scourge prior to 1973, these rulings opened the floodgates. In 1973, the annual abortion rate was 740,000. Within 7 years, this rate had doubled, and by 1990, the annual rate was 1.6 million. In total, 61+ million unborn children have been terminated by surgical or chemical abortion. This devastation far surpasses any other cause of death.Changing legislation and court rulings is important, but changing hearts is far more critical. Let us ask God for the grace to be prayerful and active witnesses for the Gospel of Life, in whatever way He has called each one of us. In January, Pro-Life Corner will be publishing events for you to actively participate with us in changing our culture. If you are interested in learning more about St. Matthew’s Pro-Life group, please contact Jeff Solinger at [email protected] or 614-506-2382.
CHRISTMAS MASS INFORMATION – We will be having Mass on Christmas Eve at 4:00 p.m., 6:30 p.m., and 9:00 p.m. and on Christmas morning at 10:00 a.m. All Masses will also be live streamed on our YouTube channel. No sign-ups are required for Christmas Masses. Doors will open 30 minutes before each Mass, and we will seat people in the church until we reach seating capacity. After that point, we will invite people to an overflow space where they can pray with us via live stream. Clergy will bring Communion to the overflow space at that same time as those in the church are receiving Communion. For more information about our Christmas Mass plans, please go to our website: https://www.stmatthew.net/christmas or call our office at 614-471-0212.
OFFICE HOURS DURING THE HOLIDAYS – The Parish Office will be closed December 24-January 3. We will reopen on Monday, January 4, with our regular hours of 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
ADVENT & CHRISTMAS RESOURCES – As we prepare for the coming of Jesus at Christmas, we invite you and your family to prayerfully enter into this Advent and Christmas season with our Family Life Office Advent & Christmas resource guide. Take what you want, need, or what simply fits into your schedule from this weekly Advent and Christmas resource to help refresh you and your family. We've modeled this program after our popular Summer Adventure program, and we hope you'll join in! You can find this resource guide on our website at: stmatthew.net/advent.
UPCOMING COLLECTION DURING CHRISTMAS – It has been the custom for many years at St. Matthew to take up a second collection at Christmas and make an extra mortgage payment as a sacrificial offering for the birth of our Savior. Through your support and continuing commitment during this past year, we have been able to reduce the mortgage by over $450,000. The Mortgage Fund balance at the end of this month will be just under $800,000. Since we can’t physically take up any collections, please consider going online to make that extra offering, or drop it in the offering box or Parish Office or mail it to the Office. Thank you for your generosity!
MASS FOR THE INNOCENTS is our annual Memorial Mass commemorating the death of a child through miscarriage, stillbirth, illness or abortion. Please join us as we remember loved ones who have died at a young age. The Mass will be celebrated on the Feast of the Holy Innocents on Monday, December 28 at 8:30 a.m.
2021 CALENDARS AVAILABLE IN GATHERING SPACE – Stop by the table in the Gathering Space this weekend after Masses to pick up a complimentary 2021 Liturgical Calendar (one per family please). They will be available while supplies last.
INVITE SOMEONE TO COME HOME DURING ADVENT – Now is the time of year when people make plans to connect with their families at Christmas; what better time than Advent to invite people to come home to their Church family here at St. Matthew. Postcard invitations to reconnect with the Church during Advent are available by the Advent Candle table in the Gathering Space. If you know someone who has been away from the Church, or if you know of a community bulletin board where you could post an invitation to return, please take a postcard.

PARISH PROJECTSAs good stewards of your generosity, the Facilities Team is pleased to provide you regular updates on St. Matthew campus projects, improvements, and ongoing initiatives providing a safe, healthy, and prayerful environment. After the difficult decision to transition all students to distant learning last week, the Facilities Team went to work on a very extensive school cleaning task list. With help from volunteers and latchkey staff, we accomplished more than we could have imagined. Kitchens, restrooms, and hallways were scrubbed, wiped, and sanitized. Classrooms received an extra cleaning. The Noble Activity Center and Hutta cafeteria were emptied to scrub floors and give the Hutta another coat of wax. The classroom student seat sacks were removed and washed for the second time this year. After all this, we had time to clean playground equipment and do a little touch-up painting. We were able to get the new lock system installed on all interior school doors a week early. All classrooms and offices can now be locked quickly and easily from the inside. The original 1962 north upper hall outside doors have also been scheduled to be replaced during Christmas break after breaking a couple weeks ago. This Wednesday, we will be decorating the church for Christmas. Special thanks to all those who have been working for weeks in the background on planning, logistical challenges, and preparation for this unique Christmas season. All our Christmas Masses will be streamed live. We will allow as many as safely possible into the Sanctuary. Doors will be clearly marked if we reach maximum safe capacity. The Noble Activity Center (PAC) is set up with four large projection screens to watch the 4:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Christmas Eve Sanctuary Masses live; Consecrated Hosts will be brought to the PAC for Communion. Please continue to check our website for updates. We will start live streaming well before the beginning of Mass with the ability to provide updates, if necessary. We appreciate this opportunity to provide updates on campus and Christmas activities. Please don’t hesitate to text or email suggestions on how we can better serve you. Contact George Harvey at [email protected] or text 330-904-1083. Be safe, stay healthy and have a Merry Christmas!

STEWARDSHIP: HOW CAN WE HELP YOU? As good stewards of our Parish, we are called to care for and look after St. Matthew Parish and its parishioners. We want to know how our parishioners are doing in this time of struggle and fear. How can we help you? How can we pray for you? Please remember to check on your neighbors, check on your family, and check on those who are at risk, while practicing social distancing. If you have specific needs or prayers, please email Brooke Warren at [email protected] and she will make sure to add you to the prayer list or find a way to get your needs met. We know there are a lot of people struggling financially right now and we want to help, but to do that we need the support of our parishioners who are still able to donate. If you usually give via offertory envelopes, please consider using online giving during our time away from the church. Visit www.stmatthew.net/giving for more information. AROUND THE DIOCESE
BISHOP BRENNAN STATEMENT ON THE SHOOTING DEATH OF CASEY GOODSON – I am deeply saddened and troubled by the recent shooting death of Casey C. Goodson, Jr., in Columbus. With the faithful of the Diocese of Columbus, I offer our deepest sympathy to Mr. Goodson’s family and friends as we share in their pain and grief caused by this unimaginable loss of life. We also stand in solidarity with all those in our community who seek a full and impartial investigation to understand the circumstances surrounding this tragic event. It is incomprehensible to write this statement following a summer of significant unrest caused by similar events. This distressing incident reminds us of the effort we must make together to form a community that is sincerely committed to eradicating racism, prejudice, and unjust discrimination. While experiencing initial shock and dismay, our response to any officer-involved shooting must be rooted in nonviolent means of expression so that justice may be served. We have a long road ahead of us, but this must be traveled in fellowship with those who are most vulnerable to unjust discrimination. We must continue to open wide our hearts to honest dialogue with a moral and prophetic voice. I encourage the faithful of the Diocese to hold discussions at your parish on racism and other injustices that plague our communities. When our city’s different communities seek proactively to understand each other, our future will be full of mutual respect, acceptance, and hope. – Bishop Robert J. Brennan
BETHESDA HEALING MINISTRY – This Christmas season, old memories might arise and cause stress. We can help. If you (or someone you know) are struggling from a past abortion experience, please call 614-309-0157.
JOSEPH’S COAT CLOSED DUE TO COVID-19 - Sadly, Joseph’s Coat has had to close again due to Covid-19. They are not picking up furniture or doing any other of their normal activities since Covid numbers have risen. Please do not leave any donations at their door as no one is in the building to receive them. We will advise when they can safely reopen to serve the community. Thank you.
BEWARE OF PHONY EMAILS AND TEXTS STILL CIRCULATING During the past few weeks there have again been numerous phony emails sent to unsuspecting persons (clergy, teachers, parishioners, others) from alleged priests of the Diocese requesting funds to purchase various gift cards for alleged charitable and pastoral reasons. Please be aware that there is a new scam using text messages to convey similar requests. If you receive any kind of communication, please contact the person directly to verify the authenticity of the solicitation or, at least to notify the person that a scam is underway using their identity. Thank you.
WE PRAY FOR THOSE WHO HAVE DIED – Elvira Martha Hernandez, mother of Roxana Perez; and Josephine Alexander, mother of Nan Migliozzi.
