NATIONAL ELECTRONIC FUNDS TRANSFER

National Electronic Funds Transfer (NEFT) is a nation-wide payment system facilitating one-to-one funds transfer. Under this Scheme, individuals, firms and corporates can electronically transfer funds from any bank branch to any individual, firm or corporate having an account with any other bank branch in the country participating in the Scheme.

For being part of the NEFT funds transfer network, a bank branch has to be NEFT- enabled. Individuals, firms or corporates maintaining accounts with a bank branch can transfer funds using NEFT. Even such individuals who do not have a bank account (walk-in customers) can also deposit cash at the NEFT-enabled branches with instructions to transfer funds using NEFT. However, such cash remittances will be restricted to a maximum of Rs.50,000/- per transaction. Such customers have to furnish full details including complete address, telephone number, etc. NEFT, thus, facilitates originators or remitters to initiate funds transfer transactions even without having a bank account.

Individuals, firms or corporates maintaining accounts with a bank branch can receive funds through the NEFT system. It is, therefore, necessary for the beneficiary to have an account with the NEFT enabled destination bank branch in the country. The NEFT system also facilitates one-way cross-border transfer of funds from India to Nepal. This is known as the Indo-Nepal Remittance Facility Scheme. A remitter can transfer funds from any of the NEFT-enabled branches to Nepal, irrespective of whether the beneficiary in Nepal maintains an

account with a bank branch in Nepal or not.

There is no limit - either minimum or maximum - on the amount of funds that could be transferred using NEFT. However, maximum amount per transaction is limited to Rs.50,000/- for cash-based remittances and remittances to Nepal.There is no restriction of centres or of any geographical area within the country. The NEFT system takes advantage of the core banking system in banks. Accordingly, the settlement of funds between originating and receiving banks takes places centrally at Mumbai, whereas the branches participating in NEFT can be located anywhere across the length and breadth of the country.

Presently, NEFT operates in hourly batches - there are twelve settlements from 8 am to 7 pm on week days (Monday through Friday) and six settlements from 8 am to 1 pm on Saturdays.

An overdraft facility is a formal arrangement with a bank that allows an account holder to draw on funds in excess of the amount on deposit. This type of financing is most commonly used by businesses as a way

of making their working capital more flexible, although it can also be available to individuals. Banks that offer this service typically have a number of expectations from customers who use it, and it is important for customers to be aware of these expectations before entering an agreement.

The idea behind overdraft facility agreements is that sometimes one needs a bit more money than is available on deposit to deal with various expenses. For example, a business that is always slow in March and April might need help to make payroll and keep current with all accounts and creditors. Another business might need to make a big one-time expense that exceeds the funds on deposit.

With an overdraft agreement, the company can repay the funds at its convenience. The bank may charge an overdraft fee for accessing the money, however, and the interest rate can be higher than that for other types of loans. The bank also has the right to demand repayment in full. Balancing an overdraft facility wisely can free up capital and make people more stable financially, but unwise use can lead people into a spiral of debt that may be difficult to escape.

How to go about it??

The process is similar to taking any other loan. You can offer your bank a host of collaterals, such as your house, shares, bonds, insurance policies, fixed deposits and obtain such overdraft facility. But each one of these has their own upsides and downside.

For example, taking an overdraft against property though allows you a larger line of credit as compared to a fixed deposit in absolute terms, property evaluation will take some time. However, the bank will be much quicker while sanctioning overdraft against fixed deposits.

Mass Media have a noteworthy effect on both individuals and the society. By effect I refer to any behavioural change that may occur after exposure to a mass medium.In the last five decades, the media and its influence on the societies, has grown with the advance of technology. First there was the telegraph and the post offices, then the radio, the newspaper, magazines, television and now the internet and the new media including laptops, cell phones etc. There are positive and negative influences of mass media, which we must understand as a responsible person of a society.

Before discussing the influence of mass media on society it is imperative to explain the three basic functions of mass media; they are providing news/information, entertainment and education. The first and foremost function of the media in a society is to provide news and information to the masses, that is why the present era is some time termed as the information age as well. People need news/information for various reasons, on one hand it can be used to socialize and on the other to make decisions and formulate opinions. Entertainment would be the other function of the mass media where it is mostly used by the masses to amuse them in present day hectic environment. Educating the masses about their rights, moral, social and religious obligations is another important function of mass media, which needs no emphasis.

The media has an ability to change the nature of our interactions and culture. It not only sets the agenda it also defines who we are as the society and how we see ourselves by constructing meaning about every other aspect of life that exist. The effects of mass media have being evident in society from as early as the nineteenth century.

Each and every one of us is affected on a daily basis by some media content; we get weather updates and decide what is appropriate to wear for that particular day. Mass mediums like television have a more direct effect on human behaviour because of the level of concentration it requires and the society is more exposed to television than any other medium.

By watching television, films, reading newspapers and surfing the internet we can over a period of time learn the social norms adhered to by certain groups, people and organisations in society. The media has both good and bad effects on the society, at times they entertain and inform us but most of the time they brainwash us with advertisements on how we must buy a specific product or change the way we cook, dress and even behave.

However a negative influence in teenagers is the use of guns and ammunition by celebrity movie stars, the constant exposure of which would seduce the teen to replicate the same behaviour in the real life. When we watch television or an action movie we usually see many images of violence. The problem with this is that it can become traumatic especially in our children as they see it more and more.

We have put our trust on the media as an authority to give us news, entertainment

and education. However, the influence of mass media on our kids, teenagers and society is so big that we should know how it really works. The media makes billions of brands with the advertising they sell and that we are exposed to, every single moment. We buy what we are told to buy by the media. After seeing thousands of advertisings we make our buying decisions based on what we saw on television newspapers or magazines. These are the effects of mass media especially in teenagers, they buy what they see on television what their favourite celebrity advertise and what is acceptable by society based on the fashion that the media has imposed on them.

There are some positive and negative influences in young people of our society due to these ad campaigns in the media.
