AK-47 / AKMThe AK 47 is best described as a hybrid ofprevious rifle technology innovations: thetrigger, double locking lugs and unlockingraceway of the M1 Garand/M1 carbine, thesafety mechanism of the John Browningdesigned Remington Model 8 rifle, and the gassystem and layout of the Sturmgewehr 44. There are many variations. The weapons areused by all former Warsaw Pact countries, and they are in service with numerous armedforces, both regular and irregular. They can be found in many countries in Asia and Africa.

AK-74The AK 74 is an adaptation of the 7.62mmAKM assault rifle and features severalimportant design improvements. Thesemodifications were primarily the result ofconverting the rifle to the intermediate-caliber5.45x39mm cartridge, in fact, some earlymodels are reported to have been converted AKMs, with the barrel re-sleeved to5.45x39mm. The result is a more accurate and reliable rifle than the AKM. The AK-74 andAKM share an approximate 50% parts commonality (interchangeable are most often pins, springs and screws). There are many variations. The weapons are used by all formerWarsaw Pact countries, and they are in service with numerous armed forces, both regularand irregular. They can be found in many countries in Asia and Africa.

AR 15 (M16/M4)The heart of the AR-15 is the direct gas system. This systemuses no conventional gas piston and rod to propel bolt groupback after the shot is fired. Instead, the hot powder gasesare fed from the barrel and down to the stainless steel tubeinto the receiver. Inside the receiver, the rear end of the gastube enters into the "gas key", a small attachment on thetop of the bolt carrier. The hot gases, through the gas key, enter the hollow cavity inside the bolt carrier and expands there, acting against the boltcarrier and the collar around the bolt body. The pressure of the gases causes the bolt carrierto move back against initially stationary bolt. At least 8 million items were produced. TheCQ is a variant of the AR-15 rifle manufactured by the Chinese arms company, NORINCO.The "Terab" rifle is a clone of the Norinco CQ manufactured by the MIC (Military IndustryCorporation) of Sudan. The "Armada" rifle is a clone of the Norinco CQ manufactured byS.A.M. - Shooter's Arms Manufacturing, a.k.a. Shooter's Arms Guns & Ammo Corporation, inthe Philippines. The CQ/Terab has been observed in South Sudan used by some rebel groupsin 2013.

Colt M1911Technically, the M1911 is a recoil operated, locked breech semi-auto pistol. It has a single action trigger with frame mountedsafety that locks the hammer and the slide. The hammer can belocked either in cocked or in lowered position, allowing the gunto be carried in "cocked and locked" state, with safety on,hammer cocked and round chambered. Additional automatedsafety is incorporated into the rear of the grip and locks theaction, when the gun is not properly held. The Colt M 1911 was manufactured by manycompanies in many countries, partly in the original form, partly modified, partly underlicense and partly without a license. It was exported to many countries after WW II, and itwas in service with the US forces for 70 years.

The Central Intelligence Agencysupplied nearly 500 Stingers (some sources claim1,500–2,000) to the Mujahedeen in Afghanistan. After the1989 Soviet withdrawal from Afghanistan, the UnitedStates attempted to buy back the Stinger missiles, with a55 million dollar program to buy back around 300 missiles. The U.S. government collectedmost of the Stingers it had delivered, but some of them found their way into Iran, Qatar andNorth Korea.

FN FALThe FN FAL (Fusil Automatique Leger - LightAutomatic Rifle) is one of the most famousand widespread military rifle designs of the20th century. It can be found in both the 7.62NATO and, very rarely, the 5.56 NATO versions. The furniture may be wood, metal or plastic. There are various barrel lengths. In the UK (L1A1), Canadian, Indian and Dutch versions, there is no automatic fire mode. The gas system is fitted with a gas regulator, so that itcould be easily adjusted for various environment conditions, or cut off completely, so thatrifle grenades could be safely launched from the barrel.

Glock 17Several modified versions of the Glock 17 have also beenintroduced. The Glock 17C incorporated slots cut in the barrel andslide to compensate for muzzle rise and recoil. The Glock 17Lincorporates a longer slide and extended barrel. Initially, theGlock 17L had three holes in the top of the barrel and acorresponding slot in the slide; however, later production pistolslack the holes in the barrel. The Glock 17MB is a version withambidextrous magazine catch. Glock pistols are designed with three independent safetymechanisms to prevent accidental discharge. The system, designated "Safe Action" byGlock, consists of an external integrated trigger safety and two automatic internal safeties:a firing pin safety and a drop safety. The external safety is a small inner lever contained inthe trigger.

HK 21The basic action of the machine gun, whichreceived the company designation HK 21, wassimilar to that of the G3 rifle. The HK 21 firedfrom a closed bolt (not that big issue since itsheavy barrel was really quick-detachable) and, unlike most machine guns, its belt feeding module was located below the receiver. Variants:HK11E automatic rifle (magazine fed, 7.62 mm) HK13E automatic rifle (magazine fed, 5.56mm) HK21E general purpose machine gun (belt feed, 7.62 mm) HK23E light machine gun(belt-fed, 5.56 mm). HK 23The HK (Heckler & Koch) 23 emerged in 1972 from theoriginal HK 21, which explains the optical and technicalresemblance between them and their variants. Usually it isfired from a bipod, but it can also be tripod mounted. Whilethe production of the original HK 21 and 23 have officiallyceased, there are still models in production. Residualnumbers may remain in service. An “E” added to theweapon’s name identifies models for export.

MG 3 / MG 42The MG is a short-recoil operated, air cooled, belt fed weapon which fires from an open bolt. The barrel is quick-removable, and can bereplaced in less than six seconds by a properlytrained crew. The action of the weapon isoperated by the recoil of the locked barrel, assisted by a muzzle booster which usespressure from the muzzle blast to increase the recoil impulse. This is a simple and solidsystem. Variants: MG 1: Rheinmetall variant of the MG 42, most notably rechambered to fire7.62×51mm NATO. MG 1A1 (MG 42/58): As MG 1, but with sights properly calibrated for thenew round. Sights refitted to existing MG 1s. MG 1A2 (MG 42/59): MG 1A1 variant; productimproved with longer ejection port, heavy bolt and friction ring buffer. MG 1A3: MG 1A2variant; product improvement of all major components. MG 1A4: MG 1 variant; for fixedmount armor use. MG 1A5: MG 1A3 variant; MG1A3s converted to MG1A4 standard. MG 2:Designation for all wartime MG 42s rechambered to 7.62×51mm NATO. MG 3: MG 1A3variant; product improved with AA rear sight. MG 3E: MG 3 variant; reduced weight model(roughly 1.3 kg lighter), entered into late 1970s NATO small arms trials. MP UZIThe UZI and the Czechoslovakian series Sa 23 to Sa 26 were thefirst weapons to use a telescoping bolt design, in which the boltwraps around the breech end of the barrel. This allows the barrel tobe moved far back into the receiver and the magazine to be housedin the pistol grip, allowing for a heavier, slower-firing bolt in ashorter, better-balanced weapon. The pistol grip is fitted with a gripsafety, making it difficult to fire accidentally. It was built in Belgiumunder license for export to Germany and Iran. Croatia manufactured unlicensed copies ofthe Uzi and Micro-Uzi called the ERO and Mini ERO respectively. Mini- and Micro-Uzisubmachine guns are produced either in open-bolt or closed-bolt versions.

Simonov SKSThe SKS is a self-loading weapon. It utilizes a short-stroke gas piston with its own return spring and atilting bolt locking, where a bolt tips down to lockonto the floor of the receiver. The charging handle isattached to the right side of the bolt carrier andmoves when the gun is fired. The safety switch islocated inside the trigger guard. The early model 50weapons are shorter and are usually found without a bayonet. In general, the SKS is anexcellent all-around weapon that offers a slightly longer range and better accuracy than theKalashnikov AK-47, but, for military use, it lacks the magazine capacity and selective-firecapabilities. The weapon was in service with several armed forces, both regular andirregular, and it can be found in many countries in Asia and Africa.

Sten MPIn Germany, the STEN models “Potsdam” and“Neumünster” were manufactured during WWII. In late 1944, the Mauser works in Germanysecretly started manufacturing copies ofBritish Mk II Sten, apparently for diversion andsabotage purposes. These weapons wereintended to duplicate the British original as closely as possible, right down to the markings. The series was referred to as the „Gerät Potsdam“ and approximately 28,000 weapons weremade. Also, during WW II some resistance groups in German-occupied countries (DNK, FRA,NOR, POL) produced significant numbers of Stens.

Sterling MP L2A3Sterling submachine guns were widely manufactured forexport. More than 70 countries purchased various quantitiesof Sterling submachine guns. These weapons were ratherpopular among British troops because of their relativelycompact size, adequate firepower and accuracy and goodreliability. Special "high power, submachine-gun only"ammunition was procured by British army for Sterlingsubmachine guns. This ammunition was absolutely safe in Sterling submachine guns, butcan cause extensive wear to many 9mm pistols designed for commercial 9x19 ammunition.

Tagging of SourcesWe believe that our Guide should be as transparent as possible without endangering theconfidentiality of our sources. Rather than name the exact source for each unit of data, wehave created tags so that users can at least know whether the data comes from a primaryor secondary source, and by which medium it can or has been found. All incoming data isvalidated and then tagged by the project team at BICC before it enters our database.

Sources are tagged according to the following criteria:

1. Primary Sources:These are presentations of facts. They are proof of an SALW event (e.g. a transfer, sighting, misuse, etc.) because the source was created at the time of the event itself. Primarysources as usually original documents such as transfer authorizations, firearms legislation,or academic journals presenting results of a study on SALW holdings in a particular country, for example. However, they can also be information offered by a person with directknowledge of an SALW event or who has documented an SALW event at the time that ithappened.

2. Secondary Sources:These are interpretations or evaluation of facts. Secondary sources contain commentaryand analysis of SALW events that are documented in primary sources.

Sources are also tagged according to the dominant medium of delivery:A. Written - the source is based on written words.B. Oral - the source is based on spoken words.C. Visual - the source is based on seen events or optical images.

These criteria make our tags two-dimensional. While the process of classifying sources is aprimarily subjective one, the project team at BICC has developed the following table toserve as an example of possible sources within each category.

Table: Examples of sources on SALW distribution

About the GuideThe Interactive Guide on Small Arms and Light Weapons is an open access tool, designed to build knowledge on how to identify different types, makes and models ofcommonly used SALW in organized violence; to collect data on the global and country-specific spread of these SALW; and to describe some of their visual and technicalspecifications.

The guide is not an exhaustive list of all SALW that are used around the world.

Global SALW control relies on, among other things, data and knowledge of the weaponsthemselves. Our aim is that the Guide will be used to support national reporting duties onSALW holdings; facilitate and ameliorate the collection of data on SALW; and increasegeneral knowledge of global distribution of SALW.

The interactive Guide was developed by BICC in close cooperation with the BundeswehrVerification Center (BwVC), and with the generous support of the Federal Foreign Office,Germany.
