Course Title: Bangladesh Economics (3 credit hours) Course Code: ECON-3506

1. COURSE OBJECTIVES:The Fundamental Purpose of this course is to introduce the whole Economy, Economic Factors, and Parameters to the students. They will be able to know basically macroeconomic situation, National Income & Expenditure, Budget, Deficit Financing, Borrowings, Contributions of Agriculture, Industry, External Sectors etc. to flourish their knowledge. 1. COURSE CONTENTS:Mid-term Examination

Chapter-1Macroeconomic Situation and related concepts: Mixed Economy, GNP, GDP, Business Cycle, AD, AS, Inflation, Unemployment, Growth and Development, Budget, Subsidy, savings and Investment, Remittances, FDI, Balance of Payments, Foreign Exchange, Foreign Exchange Reserve etc.

Chapter-2Agriculture: Definition; Structure; Characteristics; Importance and role of agriculture in the economy of Bangladesh; role of agriculture as a basis for industrialization; Current situation of agriculture; Problems and prospects of agriculture; Self-sufficiency in food; Modernization and Marketing of agriculture; Agricultural Credit: Comparative analysis and sector wise allocation of GDP in agriculture. Constructive criticism and Recommendations of improving agricultural situation in the economy of Bangladesh.

Chapter-3Industry: Role of Industry; Size and Composition of Industrial Sectors; BSCIC;SMEs; BCIC; BSFIC; BSEC; BTMC; Bangladesh Handloom and Sericulture Industry; Bangladesh Mills Corporation; Problems and prospects of jute industry; Garments industries: Challenges and prospects. Private vs Public Sectors; Nationalization and Privatization; Problems and Prospects of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI); Industrial Development and Industrial Policy in Bangladesh; Industrial Loan; Recommendations to develop Industrial situation in Bangladesh.

FINAL EXAMINATION:Chapter-4External Sector: World Trade Scenario-Export and Import policy; World Trade Organization and Bangladesh Regional Trade Agreement: APTA, SAFTA, SAPTA, BIMSTEC, TPS-OIC, D-8, GATT and its impacts; Composition and Direction of Foreign Trade of Bangladesh; Balance of Trade and Balance of Payments; Adverse Balance of Payments and its correction: A reality.

Chapter-5Fiscal & Financial Sector: Budget, Types of Budget, Financing of Deficit Budget; Public Expenditure: Expenditure under ADP; Composition of ADP expenditure by major sectors; Public Debt Management; Money and Credit Situation; Financial Market Management; Banking and Non-Banking Institutions: Financing in Agriculture, Industry & SMEs; Financial sector management and policy reforms; Capital Market and Capital Market Scenario

Chapter-6Power and Energy: Current Energy situation in Bangladesh; Contribution of Electricity in GDP and its Growth rate; Energy Efficiency and Energy Conservation; Problems and Prospects of Energy Security in Bangladesh

Chapter-7Poverty Alleviation: Concept of Poverty and Poverty Alleviation; Present Poverty situation in Bangladesh; Selected Programmers for Poverty Alleviation: Social Safety Net; Role of NGOs in Poverty Alleviation( Micro-Credit by Grameen Bank, PKSF, BRAC, ASA, PROSHIKA, TMSS Shakti Foundation, SSS, BURO, PRSP, ICT, Public and Private Banks); Role of MDGs in Poverty Alleviation; Role of Zakah Management in Poverty Alleviation; Factors behind Poverty and Inequality; Challenges and Prospects in Poverty Alleviation in Bangladesh.
