Since 2011, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation (BMRC) has been operating
around 42 km of subway track across the city of Bangalore, India. Over the next
few years, BMRC will expand the existing metro lines and add extra stations to
the network. To ensure their control room is ready for future expansion and to
optimize the monitoring of train movements on the existing network, the metro
operator chose to install two modern Barco video walls. Each video wall consists
of six Barco OV-715 projection modules, and is perfectly scalable: it readily allows
of future modifi cation and expansion.

The Bangalore Metro, nicknamed
‘Namma Metro’, offers a comfortable,
eco-friendly alternative for transport
within the city of Bangalore (India)
and runs over about 42.3 km of track.
The network was brought into service
in October 2011, and is operated by
the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation
(BMRC). To enlarge its possibilities to
monitor traffic on the metro lines, BMRC
decided to use two advanced Barco
video walls.

Challenges and objectives:- smoothly monitor train movements on the BMRC network
Barco solution and services:- 2 units of 3 x 2 OV-715 each
Why Barco- High quality and reliability- Positive past experience - Local presence and support center
The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation is a joint venture between the Government of India and the Government of Karnataka, a state in Southwest India. “The project has an East-West corridor of 18.10 km long, and a 24.20 km North-South corridor,” explained A.S. Shankar, Chief Signalling and Telecommunication Engineer at BMRC. “We want to provide passengers with a high comfort level of travel while, at the same time, helping to reduce carbon emissions.”
Taking future expansion into account
BMRC used to rely on a mimic panel to monitor the metro lines and track the movement of train vehicles. “The expandability of that system was very limited,” said Shankar. “Seeing as we are expanding the metro lines in various steps over the next few years, using and updating the mimic panel would present us with challenges over and over again. To avoid those inconveniences and give ourselves more upgrading opportunities, we decided to drop the mimic panel altogether and start looking for a DLP rear-projection system.”
Strong local Barco presence
When looking for the best solution, BMRC took into consideration various options. “After researching the market and consulting other rail companies like the Delhi Metro Railway Corporation, Barco really stood out,” acknowledged Shankar. “Barco has a strong presence in India and offers local customer support. A local sales
rep also accompanied us on a visit to the Barco factory in Noida, where we were able to experience the quality of the OV-715 modules hands-on.”
Sharp, bright images
After learning more about the BMRC project, Barco suggested installing two video walls, each consisting of six OV-715 70” DLP projection modules, in a three by two set-up. “Even though our metro trains only operate between 5 am and 12 pm, the video wall is being monitored 24/7 by a group of 18 colleagues. It’s critical that we have access at all times,” said Shankar. The OV-715 video wall is up to that job: it ensures outstanding picture quality – with wide viewing angles –, high reliability and ease of use. Moreover, Barco’s unique Barco’s Sense6 technology ensures consistent color and brightness uniformity, at all times and over time.
More to come
“Throughout the preparations and the installation, Barco really proved itself to be a proactive partner,” Shankar concluded. “The user-friendly video wall meets all our requirements, and offers more options than we are currently using. We look forward to making full use of its full visualization capabilities. When the time comes to expand our control room Barco will, once again, be our first choice!”
