5 – Type of Pitch:Constant – All teeth on theblade have uniform spacing, gullet depth, rake angle throughout the full length. Typically forgeneral purpose cutting. Identified by one pitch number.

Variable – Size of tooth anddepth of gullet varies tosubstantially reduce noise levelsand vibration. Helps cut all structurals, tubing and solids smoothlyand quickly. Identified by two pitch numbers.

6 – Pitch (Teeth-per-inch)Pitch is generally regarded as the number of teeth per inch or 25mm. Cutting thinner sections requires a finer pitch (more teethper inch /25mm). Thick sections require coarser pitches (less teethper inch/25mm). The charts are good guidelines.

Feeds and SpeedsStarrett has a Band Saw Blade Selection Slide Chart available byrequest for a quick reference to the optimal feeds and speeds

Band Saw Blade Break-In ProceduresThe proper break-in of a bi-metal blade assures longer blade life, faster cuts for a longer period of time and consistent performance.Refer to the slide selection chart for proper feeds and speeds.Easy-to-cut material such as carbon steel and aluminum – Run thenormal surface feet per minute (SFM). Adjust the feed pressure toabout one-half the normal cutting rate for the first few cuts or for 50-100 square inches (323-645 sq. cm). Increase to the normal rate.

4 – Tooth Shape:Regular – A conventional toothused for general purposesawing, straight or zero rake.Gladiator® – Large teeth, up to12º positive rake angle, foroptimum production cutting ofsteels up to 42 HRc, stainless, nickel based and nonferrousalloysHook – A positive rake for fastcutting of nonferrous metals andnon-metallicsSkip – Zero rake and shallowgullets for cutting large sectionsof soft, nonferrous material.

Because the cross section limits in the chart are broad and overlap, choose a coarser pitch if the speed of cut is most important.Choose a finer pitch if finish is most important.

Hard-to-cut materials such as nickel-based alloys like Inconel, hardened steels, tool steels and stainless steels – Run the normalsurface feet per minute (SFM). Adjust the feed pressure to aboutthree-quarters of the normal for the first few cuts or 25-75 sq.inches, increase the cutting rate part way to normal for the next fewcuts, then increase to the normal cutting rate. Avoid vibration.NOTE: Be sure to remove chips on these types of materials.

Friction Cutting BladeMade of a special fatigue resistant material, this blade is ideal forthin, ferrous sections. It is made of a high-silicon alloy and has a fullyhardened tooth with a special tempered back allowing it to be run atspeeds up to the 15,000 SFM (4500m) necessary to achieve themelting point of the ferrous metal to be friction cut. A heavy tooth setfurther enhances the fast cutting action of these blades. Teeth with“air scoop” action brings oxygen into the kerf to burn up the metal.Cuts materials up to 5/8 (16mm) thick.

Tooth shape is regular. Friction blades are furnished welded inconvenient lengths, ready to use. These blades are also furnished in100, 250 and 500 (30, 76 and 152m) coils as listed.

Carbide Grit BandsThese band saw blades will easily cutthrough most hard and abrasive materials.

Starrett carbide band saw blades areespecially useful in cutting new andcomplex materials such as compositegraphite, fiber-reinforced plastics andtitanium. In some cases, they cut betterthan regular blades. In other cases, they’rethe only blades that will cut when a regularband can’t.

Use Carbide Grit Band Saws :◆ For material 1/4 (13mm) in thickness

and above, use gulleted blades◆ Where surface chipping is possible or on

brittle materials or material thicknessesless than 1/4 (13mm), use continuousedge blades

◆ Coarse grit is applicable for fastercutting of thick materials or metals

◆ Finer grit is applicable on thin materialsand fine finishing

◆ Minimum machine wheel diameter of24 (600mm) is recommended forcontinuous band. Smaller diameterstend to increase fatigue and reduceblade life

◆ Use widest applicable blade for straight cutting

◆ 30% reductions in cut radius can beachieved using grit blades instead ofstandard blades

◆ Coolants are needed for most metalcutting and should be considered forglass and ceramics

◆ Start cuts at lower speeds and graduallyincrease until the required performanceis achieved

◆ Metal cutting – a fine, stringy strip indicates the correct feed and band speed

◆ Increase the life of the blade by turningthe blade inside-out from time to time. This presents a new edge to the work

Cutting tips:◆ Roller guides and rubber-coated idle

and drive wheels are recommended◆ Minimum Band Wheel Diameter:

12 (300mm) for gulleted blades◆ Use continuous edge on cross sections
