Black & McDonald has entered into a national agreement with Imperial Oil Limited to become the company’s General Services Provider (GSP),

delivering Facility Management & Operations services as well as minor projects and modifications to 65 oil and gas pipelines and distribution

facilities across Canada.“This is a coast to

coast win for Black & McDonald, and builds upon the excellent services we have provided as the GSP in Manitoba for the last twelve years and in Ontario and Dartmouth, Nova Scotia for the last six years” said Phil Taggart, Black & McDonald’s VP, South West Ontario Region.

The scope of our work encompasses operational support, facility maintenance and minor projects & modifications on a large portfolio of properties housing oil & gas product distribution systems and equipment. These include pipelines and distribution terminals,

the key links between Imperial Oil’s refineries and their final customers, containing large-scale fuel storage, fuel transfer equipment, rail links,

and office and warehouse space. From security to groundskeeping and snow removal, to a wide range of trades work, our job is to keep these facilities and the equipment they contain in continuous operation,allowing Imperial Oil staff to concentrate on their core business.

Southern Ontario Electrical, Utility Regions Win R. H. Carroll Safety AwardThe Southern Ontario Electrical Region and the Southern Ontario Utility Region have been awarded the R. H. Carroll Safety Award from the Electrical Contractors Association of Ontario (ECAO) for 2011.

This annual award was presented to Black & McDonald Limited on June 16 at the ECAO Annual General Meeting and is in recognition to the dedication and commitment that both these regions have demonstrated towards safety in the electrical contracting industry in Ontario over the last several years. The agreement covers more than 60 Imperial Oil sites across Canada

B&M Quebec and Southern Ontario Utilities Regions have joined forces to provide Balance of Plant (BOP) Services to Kruger Energy’s Kemont Wind Farm, a 100-megawatt project in Montérégie, Quebec on the south shore of the Island of Montreal. When complete, the plant should provide Hydro Quebec with enough energy to power the equivalent of some 10,000 homes heated by electricity. Over the next 18 months, 44 wind turbines will be erected in five municipalities. Black & McDonald is responsible for the infrastructure of the wind farm, including the construction of 34 km of access roads leading to the wind turbine structures, the crane and assembly platforms for the erection of the Wind Turbine Generator (WTG) components, as well as construction of 64 km of underground electrical power collection cables, a substation to connect to Hydro Quebec’s high-voltage transmission system, and the wind farm control building. B&M’s Quebec and Ontario Utilities Regions are equal partners in the project. Construction begins this fall with road construction and WTG foundations, with underground cable collector systems, substation and control building construction scheduled to begin in October for completion in the spring & summer of 2012. The turbines will be erected during the summer and fall of 2012, and the plant should be producing power by December of next year. Key people involved in the project from B&M’s Quebec Region include Project Manager Bernard Hedrei, Electrical Superintendant Sylvain Barbe and Lead Coordinator Stephane Lambert; In Ontario, Construction Manager Mike Steffan and Project Administrator Amanda Stieva lead the project.

The Outage Cup is awarded by Ontario Power Generation each week during an outage to a contractor which has gone above and beyond OPG’s expectations. In June, Black & McDonald’s Power Generation Region successfully completed Outage D1111 at the Darlington Nuclear Generating Station; during this outage, B&M was awarded two Outage Cups.

The first Cup was awarded for the piping replacements on an emergency service water system. This unit was in a vulnerable state during the execution of the work, so it was imperative to execute the work as per specific instructions in the work plan. This job was completed successfully, safely and ahead of schedule.

The second Cup was awarded for the excellent work we provided while repairing low wall conditions (welding) on the Moisture Separator Heaters. This work was awarded late and it

was difficult to pull together the resources to execute the work in a limited amount of time given in order to meet the schedule. The scope of this job continued to grow as the work progressed without the date of completion being changed to reflect the scope. As a result of sound planning, solid turnovers and teamwork the desired end date was safely and successfully met.

Power Generation Region is very proud of these two accomplishments. Our client, Ontario Power Generation, Darlington Nuclear were also impressed with our performance and in addition to the award of the Outage Cups a letter of recognition was sent out on behalf of their Outage Manager. Winning these Cups demonstrates our strong belief in our Code of Business; coupled with hard work, meeting any challenge is possible!

Adrian Morrison RVP Atlantic Region, and Mike Sharp, RVP Northern Ontario, accept the Canadian Construction Association’s Environmental Achievement Award at the 2011 CCA Conference in Hilo, Hawaii. This national award was created in 1991 to recognize innovative or exemplary environmental conduct; it is given to the contractor who demonstrates exceptional environmental leadership within the construction industry. The CCA recognized Black & McDonald for making environmental protection a core element of its corporate responsibility.

B&M Receives 2010 Environmental Achievement Award from Canadian Construction Association

The Asphalt Banditos hit the road on Saturday, June 11 and Sunday, June 12, joined by 4,600 fellow riders in The Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer in support of the Princess Margaret Hospital (one of the top five cancer research centres in the world) in Toronto. The ride was an intense 215-km, 8-hour journey from Toronto to Niagara Falls. The Bandito Cheerleaders went alongside the team proudly flying the B&M flag displaying notes of encouragement and support, names of past survivors of loved ones and those who have passed which we remember – the reason for the Ride! Together the team was able to raise $39,000. Black & McDonald’s commitment towards the community we work and live in was demonstrated, not only by the company, but especially by the individual members of the Asphalt Banditos!

That familiarity is the key to getting a job done properly, whether it’s a simple installation of an office whiteboard, a regular inspection of a specialized piece of equipment, or a full-scale renovation of a section of a facility,

Since the contract was awarded in early May, B&M began an intensive period of preparation, hiring and assigning project managers; putting standardized business and reporting systems in place; and training our people in Imperial Oil’s safety training program, the Loss Prevention System (LPS). “The startup was a strong test of our use of communications technology” says Eric Tolton, B&M’s Senior Project Manager responsible for startup. “We used webinars, video conferences and teleconferences on a regular basis to communicate, coordinate, train and even to have brainstorming sessions. It brought people from across the country on to the same page quickly and efficiently, and helped us to meet the client’s goal of coast to coast consistency.” On July 1, with standardized systems in place nationally, we began work in earnest.

Black & McDonald is now serving facilities on all three Canadian coasts and everywhere between, in locations as diverse as Nanaimo and Lougheed, British Columbia; Inuvik and Hay River, NWT; Calgary and Edmonton, Alberta; Regina and Prince Albert, Saskatchewan; Winnipeg, Manitoba; Sarnia, Toronto and Ottawa, Ontario; and Dartmouth, Nova Scotia and Cornerbrook, Newfoundland. The lessons we have learned working in remote locations through Canadian Base Operators has allowed us to execute in the far north for Imperial Oil.

Securing the contract required the input of a wide array of specialty expertise within the company, including input from AMEC Black & McDonald, Canadian Base Operators, and the Power Generation Region. Thanks go out to Marcel Brissette, Randy Docherty, Brett Barnett, Gary Citrigno, Lester Buckland, and Ken Steele.

Saturday September 11, 2010 could not have been a more perfect day for a bike ride from Ottawa to Merrickville and that’s exactly what 13 members of the “Black and Mac Pack” did as part of the Ride the Rideau challenge. No small feat either as this was a 100-km bike ride for a worthy cause – the Ottawa Hospital Cancer Foundation. In total almost $1 million was raised for the foundation by approximately 500 cyclists.

Led by Northern Ontario Vice President, Mike Sharp, the B&M team consisted of: Lise Sharp, Peter Tuck, Lisa Tuck, Mike Callan, Mario Blondin, Justine Lachapelle, Mike Kozlowski, Steve Kiebert, Laurent Dubois, Ian Ewing, Kendal Maki and Kim Miltimore. With the generous donations of employees, friends, family, suppliers and B&M this team raised over $25,000. Thanks to everyone who supported the team and this very worthy cause.

The “Black and Mac Pack” are gearing up once again on September 10, 2011 to ride the Rideau. Here’s hoping for another great ride in support of a great cause!

The People Resources Group at Black & McDonald believes the success of any business depends on the people who make up the team. Through continuous improvement and human resource initiatives our mission is to provide the right tools for our management and employees to enjoy long-term business success.

Continuous ImprovementThe B&M Way training session has recently been modified into a 4½-hour course. It is still filled with the same messages of our Mission, Vision, Code of Business and the Six Measures of Success; however tailoring the format makes it easier for regions to send new employees to the training, which has been very well received. Another improvement to the way we offer training is through the use of video conferencing for the B&M Way booster sessions. This allows us to deliver the same message in a more cost effective way with more scheduling flexibility. Three booster sessions have been delivered this way in two regions with positive reviews. We have also launched a new program available to regions at any time. The Bright Ideas Program is a three-week program designed to encourage employees to submit their continuous improvement ideas. This program, piloted in the SWO Region last December, is a great way to get people talking about their suggestions for making Black & McDonald an even stronger company. We are also working on improving the database we currently use for our customer surveys, developing a compilation of B&M subject matter experts, and providing additional support for regional B&M Way initiatives. Human ResourcesOur HR team is currently working with a national, industry-led organization to develop a mentorship program, which will assist with new employee development. In addition, a recruitment guidebook will soon be made available to help in our efforts to retain our top performers, and attract the most qualified candidates. We are also continuing to implement our Manager’s Toolkit, which contains information on performance appraisals, career development, and succession planning. A number of services have been added by both our Employee Assistance and Standard Life benefits providers. We are also excited to announce an effort to make our Employee Survey more accessible to our employees; beginning this year it will be available online!
